The requirements for program-to-program communication that prompted the creation of the communications interface for IBM's systems application architecture (SAA), the considerations that went into the design of its function, and the basic concepts of the interface are discussed. An example of two programs using the Communications Interface is also included. The authors conclude that the evolving SAA Common Programming Interface and the Communications Interface within it provide a programming environment of languages and services for development of application programs that span systems.

The miscibility of homopolymer random copolymer blends .3. Blends of SAA with polymethacrylates and polyesters

The miscibility of blends of poly(styrene-co-allyl alcohol) (SAA) with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA), poly(n-butyl methacrylate) (PnBMA), poly-epsilon-caprolactone (PCL) or polycarbonate (PC) has been studied by means of NMR, FT-IR and DSC techniques. It was found that SAA and PMMA, PEMA or PCL form miscible blends and SAA is only partially miscible with PC or PnBMA. Both phenyl groups and hydroxyl groups in SAA are involved in the intermolecular interactions between SAA and PMMA, PEMA or PCL. Also the hydroxyl-carbonyl hydrogen bonds existing in all the miscible blends studied are formed partially at the expense of the disruption of self-association of hydroxyl groups in pure SAA. Thermoplastic apparent interpenetrating polymer networks of polyurethane and styrene/acrylic acid copolymer obtained by melt mixing. Structure-property relationships

Thermoplastic apparent interpenetrating polymer networks (thermoplastic-AIPNs) were prepared at several compositions by melting and pressing of crystallizable polyurethane (CPU), based on butylene adipate glycol (BAG), and styrene/acrylic acid random copolymer (S/AA). Structure-property relationships in the thermoplastic-AIPNs were investigated by means of wide-angle and small-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS, SAXS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), thermally stimulated depolarization currents (TSDC) techniques, dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS) and several physico-mechanical characterization techniques. The results obtained by the various techniques were critically compared to each other. They suggest that the two components show weak affinity to each other and that the thermoplastic-AIPNs can be classified into two groups with high and low contents of CPU, showing essentially the behavior of CPU and S/AA, respectively. However, deviations from additivity and significant changes for several properties on addition of small amounts of either of the components suggest partial miscibility. Most of the results are explained by physical interactions of COOH- groups of AA in S/AA with the ester groups of the flexible CPU blocks, which promote microphase separation in both the CPU and the S/AA components.

Optimization of Injection Molding Process for SGF and PTFE Reinforced PC Composites Using Response Surface Methodology and Simulated Annealing Approach

This study is analyzed variations of ultimate strength, friction coefficient and wear mass loss that depend on the injection molding techniques during the blending of short glass fiber (SGF) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) reinforced polycarbonate (PC) composites. A hybrid method including response surface methodology (RSM) and back-propagation neural network (BPNN) integrating simulated annealing algorithm (SAA) are proposed to determine an optimal parameter setting of the injection molding process. The specimens are prepared under different injection molding processing conditions based on a Taguchi orthogonal array table. The results of eighteen experimental runs were utilized to train the BPNN predicting ultimate strength, friction coefficient and wear mass loss. Simultaneously, the RSM and SAA approaches were individually applied to search for an optimal setting. In addition, the analysis of variance (ANOVA) was implemented to identify significant factors for the injection molding process parameters and the result of BPNN integrating SAA was also compared with RSM approach. The results of optimal parameters of injection molding process for the ultimate strength of x-direction and y-direction based on BPNN/SAA approach were increased 3.12%, and 6.18%, respectively.

Sectorised antenna array and measurement methodology for indoor ultra-wideband applications

A new sectorised antenna array (SAA) and measurement methodology are proposed for indoor ultra-wideband (UWB) applications. The proposed SAA comprises of one centre element and six side elements. The one centre element and six side elements are arranged in a semi-spherical antenna array configuration. The measurement system and methodology for the coverage of the SAA are developed. The measured bandwidth of the SAA for voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) <= 2 is 37.5%, ranging from 3.06 to 4.47 GHz. The boresight gain is more than 5.2 dBi across the impedance bandwidth. The proposed SAA is able to provide omni-directional pattern with an average gain of 5.2 dBi over the angles (0-360 degrees). The discone reference antenna is used to measure the coverage of the proposed SAA. The proposed measurement study shows that the proposed SAA offers omni-directional coverage desirable in UWB indoor location and short-range communication systems.

Size-Dependent Segregation Preference in Single-Atonn Alloys of Late Transition Metals: Effects of Magnetism, Electron Correlation, and Geometrical Strain

Dispersing isolated active metal atoms onto the surface of "inert" metal nanoparticles proves to be particularly effective in improving the catalytic performance of bimetallic catalysts. In this contribution, a quantity called average segregation energy (SE) is proposed to predict with reasonable accuracy the structural stability of single-atom alloy (SAA) clusters of late transition metals. By formulating an expression for this energy on the basis of Friedel's d-band model and under the tight binding approximation, d-band filling is found to play a major role in determining the segregation behavior of all late transition metals. On the other hand, magnetism and electron correlation would greatly enhance the ability of 3d transition metals to segregate to the alloy surface, which can be explained by an improved model that includes both perturbations. Furthermore, by using the average SEs, the effect of geometrical strain is differentiated from the electronic and magnetic contributions, which, in contrast, may help to stabilize 3d transition metals in the core region by minimizing the lattice mismatch. Finally, we demonstrate that the size-dependent segregation preference has its origin in the size dependence of the electronic and structural properties of SAA clusters.

Generalized conditioning based approaches to computing confidence intervals for solutions to stochastic variational inequalities

Stochastic variational inequalities (SVI) provide a unified framework for the study of a general class of nonlinear optimization and Nash-type equilibrium problems with uncertain model data. Often the true solution to an SVI cannot be found directly and must be approximated. This paper considers the use of a sample average approximation (SAA), and proposes a new method to compute confidence intervals for individual components of the true SVI solution based on the asymptotic distribution of SAA solutions. We estimate the asymptotic distribution based on one SAA solution instead of generating multiple SAA solutions, and can handle inequality constraints without requiring the strict complementarity condition in the standard nonlinear programming setting. The method in this paper uses the confidence regions to guide the selection of a single piece of a piecewise linear function that governs the asymptotic distribution of SAA solutions, and does not rely on convergence rates of the SAA solutions in probability. It also provides options to control the computation procedure and investigate effects of certain key estimates on the intervals.

Eltrombopag in Aplastic Anemia

The treatment of aplastic anemia is currently with immunosuppressive therapy (IT) with anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG) and cyclosporine, to which two thirds of patients respond. However, a significant proportion of these responders relapse and many have persistent cytopenias. The management of these patients is challenging. Modifications to this standard approach using alternative immunosuppressive agents or adding hematopoietic cytokines such as granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) and erythropoietin (EPO) have not improved outcome. A recent trial has shown that eltrombopag, a thrombopoeitin mimetic, is efficacious in the treatment of patients with severe aplastic anemia (SAA) refractory to IST. There is evidence that this drug works by directly stimulating marrow stem and progenitor cells thereby promoting hematopoietic recovery in patients with bone marrow failure. Several trials are ongoing in our institution using this very promising drug in combination therapy in the upfront treatment of SAA, in IST-refractory SAA and in moderate disease. The Concentrations of Inflammatory Cytokines and Acute-Phase Proteins in the Peripheral Blood and Uterine Washings in Cows with Pyometra

Contents The development of pyometra in cows depends largely on the state of local immunity of the uterus. The objective of the study was to evaluate the concentration of the following proinflammatory cytokines: tumour necrosis factor (TNF-) and interleukin-6 (IL-6);anti-inflammatory cytokine: interleukin-10 (IL-10);and acute-phase proteins (APPs): haptoglobin (Hp) and serum amyloid A (SAA), in serum and uterine washings in cows with pyometra and healthy animals. The study was performed on 20 cows divided into two groups based on the results of cytological and ultrasonographic tests: a pyometra and a healthy group (10 cows per group). Experimental material consisted of blood serum and uterine washings. The levels of the following cytokines, TNF-, IL-6, IL-10 and APPs - Hp and SAA, in the study material were determined by ELISA. The results showed that the values of TNF-, IL-6, IL-10 as well as SAA and Hp were significantly higher in serum of cows with pyometra compared to controls (p<0.001). The uterine washings had significantly higher levels of IL-6, IL-10, and Hp in pyometra cows compared to the control (p<0.001). Our results indicate that it is possible to monitor the course of pyometra in cows based on the evaluation of the concentration of cytokines and Hp in the serum and uterine washings. Simultaneous evaluation of selected indicators of antagonistic interaction can be helpful in determining the current status of local immunity of the uterus. On this basis, it could be possible to properly select an adjunctive therapy in the form of immunomodulating preparations.

Characteristics and Management of Splenic Artery Aneurysms in Adult Living Donor Liver Transplant Recipients

Splenic artery aneurysms (SAAs), occurring in 7% to 17% of patients with cirrhosis, often result in catastrophic rupture after liver transplantation. We had experienced 3 cases of ruptured SAAs after adult living donor liver transplantation (LDLT), and we then performed this study to find risk factors for coexisting SAAs in liver transplant candidates with cirrhosis and to propose ideal approaches for them. Preoperative and postoperative computed tomography angiograms and axial views were reviewed for 310 adult LDLT recipients who had cirrhosis from January 2004 to August 2005. The recorded variables were the preoperative diagnosis, the presence of SAA and its characteristics, the splenic artery (SA) diameter, and the presence and size of portosystemic collaterals. Devastating SAA rupture accompanied by hypovolemic shock occurred on postoperative days 6, 82, and 8, respectively, and it was treated emergently by embolization in cases 1 and 2 and by splenectomy in case 3. Cases 1 and 3 recovered well, but case 2 died of an unrelated cause with a long hospital stay. The incidence of SAA during the study period was 14.2% (44/310), and the size was 16.6 +/- 5.7 mm. Most SAAs were single (70.6%, 31/44) and were located in the distal one-third of the SA (82.4%, 36/44). Large portosystemic collaterals demonstrating longstanding severe portal hypertension were significantly correlated with the occurrence of SAAs. Nine patients with SAAs were preventively treated by proximal ligation (n = 4) intraoperatively and by embolization (n = 5) 1 day before or after LDLT. No patient showed severe postembolization syndrome. In conclusion, a careful preoperative evaluation of SAAs by high-resolution 3-dimensional computed tomography in liver transplant candidates, especially in those showing large portosystemic collaterals, is merited. Preventive treatment should be encouraged regardless of the size in order to avoid severe morbidity and mortality related to SAA rupture, and methods suc
