This paper summarizes several iterations in developing a compact set of four key principles for successful systemsengineering, which are 1) Stakeholder Value-Based System Definition and Evolution 2) Incremental Commitment and Accountability 3) Concurrent Multidiscipline System Definition and Development, and 4) Evidence-Based and Risk-based Decisionmaking. It provides a rationale for the principles, including short example case studies of failed projects that did not apply the principles, and of successful projects that did. It will compare the principles with other sets of principles such as the Lean systemsengineering and the Hitchins set of principles for successful systems and systemsengineering.

In this paper, we review and analyze the systemsengineering graduate research projects that students have completed as part of their curriculum requirement. The information presented here is gathered over five years. The semester long projects are completed as part of the graduate course titled ‘System Development Workshop’ taught at Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU). Students are required to investigate a discipline-related topic in systemsengineering in the form of capstone project. The general intent of the project is to give students an opportunity towards the end of their Master's degree courses, to demonstrate and apply the knowledge they have acquired over the course of the curriculum. The work performed in the project draws upon skills and knowledge acquired in the program. Students are required to identify an engineering problem, often in their work environment, and use systemsengineering methods to achieve a solution to the problem. At the end of the study, each student prepares a formal report describing the work performed, resulting conclusions and recommendations. In addition, students present their results to the online audience. Students are expected to meet professional engineering standards in their work and reports. The results of the projects are considered for submission to an academic conference or journal in the field. This course gives students, often times their first, taste of research. The intent of this paper is to demonstrate several examples of research projects completed by students and to investigate the efficacy of a research based course in systemsengineering graduate curriculum.

There is increasing interest within the rail sector in applying the concepts of systemsengineering. This paper presents arguments that the balance of concerns differs between a typical project in the rail sector and one in the domains in which systemsengineering was developed and that this difference, together with a lack of agreement on the scope of systemsengineering and differences in tradition between systemsengineering and the established rail disciplines, raise barriers to the effective and efficient importation of systemsengineering ideas into the rail sector. It is suggested that the system engineering community can lower these barriers by strengthening published systemsengineering guidance in certain areas, being prepared to express themselves in plain language and packaging their practices in a more portable fashion, while the rail community can help by being prepared to adapt the systemsengineering approach to meet their needs better and introducing new practices in a measured and systematic fashion. The benefits to both communities are identified and found to justify the investment required to take these steps. (c) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Syst Eng

The objective of this study was to develop a method to assess and analyze the total allelopathic potential of crop germplasm and to test this method on four winter wheat accessions commonly planted in the Loess Plateau. A systemsengineering model was developed and used to evaluate the total allelopathic potential of crop cultivars. In addition, a method for quantifying the total allelopathic potential in crop accessions was presented. Total allelopathic potential of four winter wheat accessions from the Loess Plateau was estimated and compared using a systems theory approach. The model assessed allelopathic potential in different parts of the plants from the time wheat turned green in spring until maturity. Results from these models indicated that the four wheat accessions had very weak allelopathic potential. Allelopathic potential declined in the order Xiaoyan 22 〉 Ningdong 1 〉 Fengchan 3 〉 Bima 1. This system engineering evaluation method allows for the assessment of allelopathic potential among crop varieties. It will help plant breeders to select and develop allelopathic crop accessions that combine weed suppression properties with agronomic traits related to yield and quality.
