A BAYESIAN MODIFICATION TO THE JELINSKI-MORANDA SOFTWARE-RELIABILITY GROWTH-MODEL

The Jelinski-Moranda (JM) model for software reliability growth is one of the most commonly cited (often in its guise as the ‘Musa model’). Recent studies show that the reliability estimates and predictions given by the model are often grossly inaccurate. It has been suggested that one reason for this poor performance may be the use of the maximum-likelihood method of inference. This paper describes a Bayesian version of the model and shows that it is sometimes an improvement on JM. However, both versions have a tendency to give optimistic answers, probably owing to a key, but implausible, underlying assumption common to both models. The authors conclude that the generally poor performance of the models is such that they should only be used with great caution.

A SOFTWARE TOOL FOR TESTING JSP DESIGNED PROGRAMS

The aim of this paper is to present a new structural testing method for use with Jackson structured programming designed programs. The problems associated with testing are outlined and the concepts behind structural testings are briefly discussed. The new structural testing method (STM) is described. The method involves the creation of a path expression from the program structure and the sbsequent expansion of the expression into a set paths. An example describes the application of the methods. A software tool written in Prolog to support STM is described in detail, again with the use of an example. The applicability of the method and supporting tool to practising software engineers is discussed, along with the advantages and disadvantages Further work being undertaken by the authors is outlined.

PARALLEL IMAGE-PROCESSING SYSTEM BASED ON THE TMS32010 DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSOR

A parallel image processor (PIP) consisting of eight Texas Instruments TMS32010 digital signal processors is described. The architecture is designed for image-processing applications and two common pattern-recognition algorithms, i.e. edge detection followed by thinning are implemented achieving a total processing time of less than one second for a 256 × 256 pixel image. The advantages and limitations of using the TMS32010 as a fast signal processor are described. Problems encountered in programming the parallel processors and ways to overcome them are highlighted.

To support the evolutionary development of information systems in decentralised organisations new tools and ways of organising information systems activities are required. A communications environment which enables co-operation and co-ordination between separate sub-units of an organisation is proposed. This environment, which is called a distributed decision making (DDM) system, allows associations between groups to be built up horizontally rather than by hierarchical structuring or centralised control. The DDM system software allows separate information systems components to be developed in parallel by different groups, and provides for the linking of these applications at execution time. A prototype DDM system and experience with using this system are described. It is a flexible and low-cost approach to the development ofad hocsystems such as decision support systems.

In this paper, a model for representing and analysing the design of a software system is proposed. The scheme is based on Petri net formalism and allows representation of both control and data flows in an integrated manner. Both the structure and the behaviour of the system can be modelled using this scheme. analysis and verification of some behavioural properties provide a certain degree of design validation prior to implementation.

This paper describes the rationale and design of an integrated set of software tools which havebeen implemented for use with a large real-time embedded system which is based on a distributed architecture. The tools include facilities to aid system-level program debugging, performance analysis and application-specific performance monitoring. Particular attention is paid to the user interface to the system and typical dialogue sequences are included.

Using general systems concepts, a schematic model of quality is proposed and its use illustrated. ON HIERARCHICAL SOFTWARE METRICS

The notion of a hierarchical software metric is introduced, encompassing and extending the earlier work of Fenton and Whitty and this author. It is shown that a stronger interpretation of this notion is insufficient for treating the important ‘number-of-paths’ metric, whereas this metric definitely falls within the range of the axiomatic system introduced herein. Finally, the technique of argument by induction over an arbitrary flowgraph decomposition is clarified and demonstrated in the new hierarchical context.

AN ABSTRACT DATA-TYPE TECHNIQUE FOR SCIENTIFIC SOFTWARE

Numerical computation forms a substantial part of the total of world computing, and, as a result, large amounts of money are spent on the production, modification and maintenance of scientific software. A methodology based on an abstract data-type technique for algorithmic design has the potential to reduce numerical software development costs. This paper describes the abstract data-type development of GEM2, a package for solving two-dimensional single/coupled real/complex elliptic partial differential equations using the global-element method. We show that the abstract design of the GEM2 package, together with the use of an extensible implementation language (Algol 68), yields a family of packages able to handle a variety of problems but based on a single source code. Development and maintenance costs are reduced by this approach; we show that, at least in this case, run time efficiency is unimpaired.
