Coral 66 was developed as a real-time programming language nearly twenty years ago. Its syntax took account of the computer architecture of the time and the compilers, which were developed over a decade ago, reflect the same standard of architecture. So it is not surprising that the portable Coral cross-compilers of today do not make use of the powerful instructions available. This paper discusses some extensions to the Coral syntax, to allow easy recognition of those constructs that can be performed efficiently by today's processors.

This paper describes four years of experience with the Yourdon diagram-based structured methodology in a medium-sized company producing real-time industrial systems. The methodology is outlined and some of the problems encountered are described along with the substantial benefits gained. There is some discussion of future prospects with Yourdon, including a brief assessment of recent real-time extensions, and of the methodology's ability to take on board automation and more formal methods.

The Experimental Aircraft Programme (EAP) is a technology demonstrator project in advance of the next generation of fighter aircraft. An integrated software toolset has been established to support the development and production of software for the advanced avionic systems embedded in this aircraft. This paper presents the work undertaken and the experience gained in developing, using and supporting the EAP software toolset from project initiation to final delivery of the software for flight testing. Many of the issues pertaining to the future requirements of an integrated project support environment and the rigours imposed in delivering relliable and high-quality real-time software for embedded processors are discussed.

ADAPTING MODULA-2 FOR DISTRIBUTED systems

Modula-2 is a recently developed concurrent programming language designed primarily for implementation on a mono-processor. This paper reports on the changes found necessary, both to the source language and to the support environment, in order to allow the language to be used to program a tightly coupled, homogenous, distributed computing system. Specific areas covered are: the allocation of program code and data to processors, which is kept independent of the source code, allowing flexible re-allocation without re-compilation; the choice of an inter-processor communication mechanism, where the remote procedure call was considered to be the most flexible technique; and the selection of an inter-process communication mechanism, where, despite the distributed nature of the target, the monitor was found most suitable.

EARLY EXPERIENCE WITH AN IPSE

British Telecom and Imperial Software Technology are collaborating to produce ISTAR, a second-generation integrated project support environment(IPSE). This product is now entering the stage of beta-site testing within BT, and IST is negotiating licences for the use of the product. To gain early experience with IPSEs and to help specify ISTAR, BT has built and operated a first-generation IPSE(IPSE1), incorporating much of the philosophy underlying ISTAR. IPSE1 has been used by a variety of (BT) customers with varying degrees of success. The largest and most successful user is BT's Belfast System and Software Engineering Centre, where registration has been achieved under the BSI registered firm scheme against BS5750. This paper outlines the philosophy used in ISTAR and IPSE 1(and also indicates the differences between the two). It then provides some background to the difficulties of introducing IPSEs into a work environment and some of the advantages and disadvantages found by both user and support organisations.

THE PUBLIC TOOL INTERFACE IN SOFTWARE ENGINEERING ENVIRONMENTS

Well specified public tool interfaces(PTIs) on which tools run, and which provide access to all facilities used by tools, are now being designed to lie at the heart of software engineering environments. This allows the source code of tools to be ported between different implementations of the PTI. Database access is of particular importance for an effective environment, and this is not provided by conventional system services. The background to current PTI work and some early developments are considered. Standardisation efforts are described, and future research is mentioned briefly, before drawing conclusions on the importance of this topic.

SIMULATING HARDWARE STRUCTURES IN OCCAM

Occam is a low-level programming language designed specifically to program an array of transputers, although it may be implemented on a single transputer or other processor using a suitable run-time support system. The paper describes the use of occam to model combinatorial and sequential logic systems. The suitability of occam for such modelling is discussed.

The paper describes a distributed basis for implementing remote software development facilities over a local area network. High-level facilities are resident in a host development computer and can be used to develop or debug software in remote target computers through simple communications and control primitives resident in each machine. Software downloading and high-level debugging in C are specifically illustrated.

The fault tolerant approach to building reliable systems acknowledges that perfection is impossible (or at best very expensive) and therefore tries to cope with the consequences of residual defects within the system. Fault tolerance has an established role in detecting and masking component faults in hardware systems, but has also been advocated as a defence against deficiencies of design. The paper argues, in question and answer format, the case for adopting design fault tolerance techniques in practical systems.

The need is argued for a rigorous and general theory of structured programming as a basis for improving software quality. Formal graph theoretic methods are developed which allow the structural modelling, metrication and reconstruction of sequential programs in terms of precisely defined general sets of basic control structures. Throughout, concepts are illustrated by examples based on actual Basic and Pascal text.
