There is a rising effort to move the full tcp/ip stack from the software to the hardware to improve the network performance and programmability further. The hardware-based tcp/ip stack must be utterly correct since tcp is the foundation of many critical applications. However, it is impractical to apply the conventional model checking methods or decomposition techniques to verify the correctness because there are numerous stateless and stateful functions involved in tcp/ip stack. Therefore, we propose an automated field-based decomposition method to make feasible the model checking of the hardware-based tcp/ip. Our method can significantly mitigate the state space explosion issue while maintaining the verification completeness. We choose FPGA, a popular programmable hardware, as our study object in the paper. Our method effectiveness is demonstrated by the verification of both stateful and stateless functions of the FPGA-based tcp/ip.

According to the characteristics of embedded system and it's network interface, we designed a simplified tcp/ip stack based on standard tcp/ip stack. This stack can works on its own or as a task of an embedded system. Based on 8-bit micro controller, we transplante the stack to embedded real-time operating system uCOS-II. Also, we did some tests and contrast the stack with existing protocol stack uip. This stack has been proved practical.

A survey of identifier-locator split addressing architectures

The tcp/ip architecture of the Internet was originally designed around the contemporary restrictions of large computers that were difficult to move around. However, electronics followed Moore's law, resulting in cheaper and smaller electronics for consumers, and portable devices, such as laptops and cellular phones, became pervasive. Consequently, the original restriction on static hosts was no longer true even though is still present in the design of the tcp/ip networking stack. The tcp/ip stack remains still constrained by its original design, which was effectively a design compromise to make the addressing model simpler. As tcp connections are created based on the same addresses used by the underlying network layer, the connections break when the address changes or is removed. Thus, the tcp/ip architecture is challenged in the temporal dimension of addressing as it was designed to assume stable addresses. This is not only problematic from the viewpoint of initial connectivity but also critical in sustaining of active data flows. In this paper, we first outline the challenges related to the inflexible nature of the tcp/ip architecture resulting from the fact that the same namespace is shared between the transport and network layers. We then discuss existing solutions for these challenges that arise from the transient nature of addresses in the tcp/ip architecture. Finally, we perform a qualitative analysis of the solutions discussed in the paper. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Inc. An architecture of WinPcap based virtual NIC driver is proposed for developing embedded network applications. It makes it possible to develop applications with real network traffic using simulation environment in PC rather than the embedded hardware, reduce development cycles while keeping the cost down. A test method with the tool of iperf is proposed to test the throughput, packet loss rate for performance and feasibility evaluation of the architecture.

A protocol stack can have different internal designs. All the design requires system resources such as CPU execution time and memory. These resources, however, consume scarce resources on an embedded target. This paper introduces different internal design models for tcp/ip protocol stack, and discusses CPU execution and memory consumption for each model, finally indicates optimum design model for some specific application.

It is quite common to forget switching off appliances which are not in use and we may not be within the vicinity to do so when we realize it. With building automation and remote control, appliances can be switched on or off without physically switching them on by their switches. Hence, an embedded web server is developed to achieve remote control of switches and autonomous control with predefined rules. A web server is used instead of conventional approach where the controls of switches are performed through the web browser via local area network or the internet. The embedded server is developed from a Microchip PIC24FJ256GB106 16-bit microcontroller together with an Ethernet controller ENC28J60 using tcp/ip stack provided by Microchip and utilizes USB flash drive as storage medium. This paper discusses the testing of components that make up the system, together with problems encountered and methods to solve the problems. Performance of the embedded webserver is obtained and documented. Optimizations were performed to increase the system's performance. The system is designed to use JavaScript to emulate HTTP digest authentication by using a one way hash function to encode the salted username and password for user authentication purpose. Power control modules were designed and developed to control AC power devices. AC light bulbs were used to demonstrate the capability of the system to operate in AC environment.
