Advanced control methods for French fry quality improvement

This article describes the results of a tcs programme that investigated approaches for the improved control of a French fry production line. Initial knowledge elicitation from process experts, coupled with data analysis, revealed the existing operational strategy. The information gathered highlighted limitations of the current strategy, indicated how it could be improved on and allowed a benefits analysis to be undertaken to financially Justify the work. Results from the implementation of the control enhancements demonstrate that the predicted improvements were achieved.

Water leak detection systems are a specialist service applicable insensitive areas and important buildings. They provide early warning of leaks and thus help to prevent damage to equipment and buildings. These are often in areas of uninsured risk. This article describes a tcs programme to develop a new microcontroller system, its basic operating principles and the benefits to the company.

Software technology that predicts stress in electronic systems and packages, developed as part of tcs programme, is described. The software is closely integrated within a thermal design tool providing the ability to simulate the coupled effects of airflow, temperature and stress on product performance. This integrated approach to analysis will help decrease the number of design cycles.

Novel rapid deployment surveillance system

The aim of this tcs programme was to design and develop a portable rapid deployment surveillance system, to be used typically by the police or others for surveillance purposes. The novel surveillance system produced is capable of ascending posts, automatically adjusting to different pole profiles while ascending and descending and being ready to operate within minutes of unpacking. The new product is expected to increase the company's annual turnover by 20%.

This article describes a tcs programme between the Mechatronics Research Centre at Loughborough University(1) and Feedback Instruments Ltd.(2) The objective of the work was the mechatronics workbench, a concept for a range of didactic equipment facilitating the teaching and training of mechatronics principles in industry and in further and higher education institutions on a global scale.

A distributed document management system

A commercial system for distributed document management, which was designed during a recent tcs programme, is described. A brief introduction to the commercial partner, AMI-The Advance Group Ltd., is given, and the design features required from the system are discussed. The article concludes by discussing the degree of commercial success accruing from the system and the associated business demands resulting from this work.
