tangible user interfaces' research on Healthcare is still young: it has had no comprehensive overview over the last decade. The present study undertakes a scoping review of TUIs in Healthcare to determine the targeted users, which kind of TUIs are preferred, how to evaluate them, and why using them in Healthcare. We reviewed 66 publications from 5 databases and the TEI conference proceedings (2010-2024). We examined each one according to the medical fields concerned, the targeted audience, the type of contribution and the purposes, the evaluation process, the artifacts, and their impact on Healthcare. Four key findings were: (1) The potential of TUIs has not yet been explored in all health fields;(2) The primary purposes of TUIs are facilitating diagnosis, promoting active aging, and improving the rehabilitation process;(3) The artifacts are mainly motivating, easy to use, and low-cost;(4) Familiarity is an essential criterion for the design process.

Early attempts at supporting interaction with digital products for the design review were based on CAD and virtual reality (VR) systems. However, it is not easy to build a virtual environment of fine quality and to acquire tangible and natural interactions with VR-based systems, which are expensive and inflexible to be adaptable to typical offices or collaboration rooms. We present a new method for supporting tangible interactions with digital products in immersive and non-immersive multi-display environments with inexpensive and convenient optical tracking. The provided environment is more intuitive and natural to help participants to review digital products through their functional behavior modeling and evaluation. Although vision-based image processing has been widely used for interaction tracking, it cannot be effectively used under a low illumination condition since most of the collaborations and meetings take place in such conditions. To overcome this problem, the proposed approach utilizes Wiimote (TM) for infrared (IR)-based optical tracking and for capturing user's interactions and intents. Thus, users can easily manipulate and evaluate digital products with inexpensive tools called IR tangibles in more natural and user-friendly environments such as large displays, tabletops, and situational displays in typical offices and workspaces. Furthermore, the multi-view manager is suggested to effectively support multi-views of digital products among participants by providing public and private views. We will show the effectiveness and usefulness of the proposed approach by demonstrating several implementation results and by evaluating user study of the proposed approach.

tangible user interface brings back physical cognitive artifacts empowered with Internet of Things, and it will be a key instrument in Industry 4.0 to control software. Such artifacts are tangible mental representation of the context of a system being built with software tools. One of the challenges on applying tangible user interface to define an appropriated interaction is the lack of a vocabulary to prepare physical artifacts for being manipulated in digital representation. We present a tangible interaction vocabulary to physically enhance software tools, particularly used in space system concept studies. It is a practical application which indicates opportunities for research and challenges for the development of new products.

This paper introduces a tangible user interface based on projector-camera system. The interface is encoded by stripes in an imperceptible form. We make the first attempt to employ a neural network for extracting hand information from structured light images. The lightweight network of only 0.24 MB parameters infers hand existence, hand segmentation and fingertip locations. These results are utilized for decoding the imperceptible stripes. Experimental results show that the proposed network outperforms state-of-the-art methods, achieving a high IOU of hand segmentation (0.996), and fingertip localization precision (98.98%) within a 10-pixel range. The interactive system performs a touch detection precision of 98.78%, with an average fingertip localization error of 3.33 pixels. It supports real-time interaction with an average execution time is 24.87ms.

Augmented Chemistry (AC) is an application that utilizes a tangible user interface (TUI) for organic chemistry education. The empirical evaluation described in this paper compares learning effectiveness and user acceptance of AC versus the more traditional ball-and-stick model (BSM). Learning effectiveness results were almost the same for both learning environments. user preference and rankings, using NASA-TLX and SUMI, showed more differences and it was therefore decided to focus mainly on improving these aspects in a re-design of the AC system. For enhanced interaction, keyboard-free system configuration, and internal/external database (DB) access, a graphical user interface (GUI) has been incorporated into the TUI. Three-dimensional (3D) rendering has also been improved using shadows and related effects, thereby enhancing depth perception. The re-designed AC system was then compared to the old system by means of a small qualitative user study. This user study showed an improvement in subjective opinions about the system's ease of use and ease of learning.

tangible user interfaces offer a new medium for education in rural India, helped by its low barrier for entry for the digitally illiterate. In this paper we discuss the design considerations & the pedagogical settings for a tangible environment to teach the skill of surveying optimal locations for toilets and soak pits. We also discuss findings from the pilot test of the technology with 10 women from rural India. This technology is intended as a pedagogical tool instead of being a full blown "serious game" so as to bring the focus on the conversations and discussion prompted by the technology, than on the technology itself.

Before venturing out into unfamiliar areas, most people scope out a map. But for the blind or visually impaired traditional maps are not accessible. In our previous work, we developed the "Auditory Map" which conveys the location of geographic objects through spatial sonification. users perceive these objects through the virtual listener's ears walking through the presented area. Evaluating our system we observed that the participants had difficulties perceiving the directions of geographic objects accurately. To improve the localization we introduce rotation to the Auditory Map. Rotation is difficult to achieve with traditional input devices such as a mouse or a digitizer tablet. This paper describes a tangible user interface which allows rotating the virtual listener using physical representations of the map and the virtual listener. First evaluation results show that our interaction technique is a promising approach to improve the construction of cognitive maps for visually impaired people.

One common concern with video games today is the lack of physical activity they demand from the user. The design of games and tangible user interfaces (TUIs) that stimulate players and engage them into fun exercising activities is starting to attract the attention of many researchers and companies. This paper presents the software and hardware design and development of a TUI intended for exercise-based games targeted mostly towards children. The proposed TUI, SmartPads, can be constructed using elemental building blocks (pads) into numerous shapes. The pads-which are individually controlled by microcontrollers-are mapped onto a computer screen in real-time. A user interacts with the TUI by stepping on the pads. To evaluate the functionality and efficiency of the TUI, we developed three games in the field of exergaming. The games also have an educational value and are integrated with multimedia output modalities to enrich children's playing experience.

A cube to learn: a tangible user interface for the design of a learning appliance

In this paper we introduce the design and development of the Learning Cube as a novel tangible learning appliance. Using the common shape of a cube we implemented a general learning platform that supports test based quizzes where questions and answers can be text or image based. Exploiting the physical affordances of the cube and augmenting it with embedded sensors and LCD displays placed on each face, we present different learning appliances as playful learning interfaces for children. Based on the initial observations of the experience with children, we argue that breaking conventions about how a computer has to look like, and providing children with a playful interface is a promising approach to embed and integrate technology into children's everyday context and activities.

3D story cube: an interactive tangible user interface for storytelling with 3D graphics and audio

Storytelling is an important part of human culture, both in entertainment andin education. Traditionally, storytelling enables multisensory experiences, including audio(speaker''s narration), vision (text and pictures in the book) and touch (turning the pages). Withthe development of multimedia technologies, digital movies for storytelling on the personal computerbecome possible. However, from the HCI viewpoint, the screen-based storytelling interfacesconstrain users to flat rectangular screens. This not only separates the story from the humans andthe physical world, but it also limits the use of touch (and, thus, limits the interaction modes).''Magic book'' [1] technology encourages a 3D interaction with the augmented reality world, but thecards and paddles used do not improve the use of touch very much, due to their flat 2Dconfiguration. As shown in Fig. 1, the users are limited to planar 2D touch, which is not like thenatural real world 3D objects that humans interact with. We address this problem by applying atangible and intuitive physical object-a foldable 3D cube. The physical setup of the system is shownin Fig. 2. This allows multiple modes of multisensory storytelling to be felt by the humans (audio,vision and 3D physical touch). Our preliminary user study shows that most of the users feel veryentertained when they can physically manipulate and explore the cubes to see and hear the story,compared to being passively given a video clip and a magic book.
