We believe that we need to put more emphasis on helping students develop problem solving capabilities in our teaching on software development. Our research question is how much mental effort students invest in the different phases of problem solving: Understanding, Solution Planning, Implementation and Review. Other questions are which category of thinking they focus on, and how the effort put into each phase correlates to success. We designed and performed an empirical study with the intention to gain insights into problem solving skills of our students. In this study, CS-students were asked to solve different typical programming problems and they were guided through the process of problem solving with a kind of coding interview. First results show that that the implementation makes up the smallest portion of the effort, measured in terms of number of characters in our interviews' transcripts. Students who were more thorough in analyzing the problem had generally longer implementation phases, indicating more substantial changes to the implementation than those who could not solve the problem. Unexpectedly, the analyzing phase took the successful students just as long as the ones who were not successful. All students repeatedly switched between the typical phases of problem solving. Students who proceeded in a more structured manner were the most successful. We see evidence that a lack of programming knowledge was not a main cause of failure in the fact that those students who could not solve the task have already failed at the problem analysis. Using insights gained from this kind of study will help to improve teaching of problem solving in introductory programming courses the future.

The aim of this study is to analyze the typical process of the practical part of software development courses at universities and to evaluate whether the current process meets the expectations of students or whether the needs of students would be better met by the benefits of automated code feedback. A semiautomated survey was conducted in German, involving bachelor students from different universities who had attended an introductory programming class within the last 6 semesters. The results clearly show that the students would like to have individual assignments instead of the due to time constraints, usual group exercises as they see more advantages for their learning progress. The use of automated code feedback could not only solve this time problem but would also bring other benefits.

In this report, we present a pre-organization summary of the workshop to be held on February 27, 2020, at the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing, Jabalpur (India), co-located with the 13th Innovations in software Engineering Conference (ISEC 2020).

This paper describes the motivation and design of a 10-week graduate course that teaches practices for developing research software;although offered by an engineering program, the content applies broadly to any field of scientific research where software may be developed. Topics taught in the course include local and remote version control, licensing and copyright, structuring Python modules, testing and test coverage, continuous integration, packaging and distribution, open science, software citation, and reproducibility basics, among others. Lectures are supplemented by in-class activities and discussions, and all course material is shared openly via GitHub. Coursework is heavily based on a single, term-long project where students individually develop a software package targeted at their own research topic;all contributions must be submitted as pull requests and reviewed/merged by other students. The course was initially offered in Spring 2018 with 17 students enrolled, and will be taught again in Spring 2019.

software engineering represents one of the most change-prone educational contents in computer science as a plethora of new software development process models, methods and tools are unleashed each day. We discuss the design of a class project which we have introduced to improve our software Engineering course presented on the third-year graduate level at our institution. For this project, the whole class collaborate to design and implement a single, reasonably large software system. We believe that the class project has the potential to provide an intensive learning experience for our students and may have several educational *** investigate the impact of the class project on student academic achievement and project success in terms of the quality of the code of the developed system. We gauge the impact of the class project by analysing differences the academic performance of the students in the course. Further, we analyzed the differences in assessment marks assigned to projects. We also evaluate the code quality by observing variations in selected software code metrics of the source code of the software systems delivered by the *** the results are inconclusive, we feel the class project provides a unique opportunity for students to get hands-on experience in the development of real-world software for industry.
