One of the most intriguing objectives when teaching computer science in mid-adolescence high school students is attracting and mainly maintaining their concentration within the limits of the class. A number of theories have been proposed and numerous methodologies have been applied, aiming to assist in the implementation of a personalized learning environment that approaches these objectives. In this paper, an empirical study is performed with the support of the "Hour of Code" initiative which took place for a second consecutive year at the end of previous year. The initiative was presented to a number of high-school students as a motivation for teaching computer programming to them. An evaluation of the students' programming skills is attempted with the aid of a questionnaire and a simple personalization framework is presented in order to adapt to the students' personal needs.

programming is a special activity, which requires very special skills. Creativity, problem solving, persistence, collaboration, communication, critical thinking, commitment, dedication and hard work are some of the skills and characteristics required of those who learn programming. They are also essential characteristics to face all the challenges of the 21st century. Learning programming is a good way to practice and develop these skills. That is why most courses, in the most diverse areas of knowledge, include programming in their curricula. However, programming courses have a bad reputation. These courses have high failure and dropout rates. It is recognized by the whole scientific community in the area that there are problems and difficulties in teaching and learning programming. With this work we want to present our set of strategies and results in the improvement of our system of teaching and learning initial programming, and with that also contribute to the development and resolution of the problem. In this work, we describe a set of activities related to the initial learning of programming with good results. We present the results of the application of a machine-learning model for predicting student failure, with excellent accuracy and precision results. Finally, we argue the improvements in our teaching system and initial learning of programming, with the final results of the course of the last 5 years.

The paper deals with development of informatics competitions in Lithuanian and in particular of the Lithuanian Olympiads in Informatics over the past 25 years. The role of the Young Programmer's School in both introducing programming to secondary school students, organizing programming competitions and later encouraging and training students to participate in informatics olympiads is emphasized. The evolution of the national olympiad in informatics from the first pen and paper competitions to the current four round contest, held using contest and grading systems, is described. The paper also gives a short overview of other related contests like the Baltic Olympiads in Informatics, and the Beaver contest.

teaching and learning programming can be complex tasks. In addition to the technical aspects, it is essential to consider each student's context. For instance, certain Brazilian career and technical education (CTE) schools include programming subjects in their regular curriculum. Attending such schools is sometimes viewed as a simpler path to higher education. Therefore, even if students have no specific interest in programming, they are required to take and pass programming courses. It is vital to ensure that the students' learning experiences are smooth and tailored to their pace, although this is only sometimes feasible. Hence, various learning strategies have been proposed in the literature to enhance programming learning. One of these strategies is scaffolding, which refers to any support provided to students during programming activities. However, only a few studies have investigated this learning strategy compared to others, especially at the high school level. In this context, the main research question of this work is: What are the main characteristics of a web environment that can promote learning and teaching programming to adolescents? The contributions of this work include: 1) a new model for learning programming;2) the design, implementation, and evaluation of an interactive webbased environment to support this model;3) the elaboration of an adaptable set of activities;and 4) findings from evaluation studies conducted in real classrooms, which will involve adolescent students at CTE high schools.

While new students on MSc IT conversion courses and new undergraduates are generally very experienced with computers they often have little or no experience of programming. In particular most of the students have been regularly playing computer games from an early age. Conventional techniques for teaching programming to these students take simple tasks that gradually build into more complex programs that exercise the full range of the fundamental constructs of the language. However, many students find it difficult to grasp the purpose of these concepts, even though the examples may be quite practical. It is common for programming teachers to divide students up as "programmers" and "non-programmers" and accept the non-programmers as never going to become programmers. In the past attempts were made to introduce programming via more visual tools. In particular the "Logo" language, which used a "turtle" that followed paths derived from instruction sets, to draw pictures on a screen, were found useful in teaching these basic concepts to a wide audience. This paper outlines the results of experiments with a computer game designed to teach basic programming constructs to MSc IT conversion course students. In the game students build mazes from a set of tiles and then produce commands from a set of basic programming constructs which are used to direct a "player" character through the maze. This can be used to undertake challenge tasks (for example, find the shortest route through the maze or exhaustively explore the maze). The program has the potential to maintain the motivation and understanding of the "non-programmers" as they learn the basic programming constructs. They thus learn the purpose of the commands first and can then relate these directly to the program that is produced. The system makes use of common game characteristics so that the players are familiar with the environment and need little in the way of instruction to know what to do. The tasks can usually be c

Plagiarism is a well known problem of today's society. Widespread of the internet, ease of data exchange, Bologna reforms and individual circumstances influence on students to resort to plagiarism. Many courses in computer science where students have programming assignments suffer from so called source code plagiarism. Beside the internet, most common origins of solved assignments are fellow students from the same or the previous generation. In this paper the source code plagiarism is discussed. Main results from observing the plagiarism in programming assignments are given showing to which extent students plagiarize.

The pandemic situation of Covid-19 has a huge influence on all levels of educations. Primary and secondary teachers had many problems with starting distance learning in the Slovak Republic. Most of the schools had not been used any softwares for distance learning before Covid-19. Teachers of Computer Science had mostly a few advantages before other teachers with using ICT tools. But they had the same main problem - what or how they will teach for practical topics e. g. programming. The paper deals with using the online environment MakeCode Arcade for teaching programming in a block-based environment for pupils in primary schools. In this paper, we describe the MakeCode Arcade environment, a simple game for teaching programming, and our experience with this environment.

Since the key point of training IT specialists is based on the labor market demands and the compliance of the employer's requirements with the knowledge and skills of future programmers acquired during the training, the authors conducted a study of the Ukrainian IT labor market. To demonstrate the distinctive features of the domestic and foreign IT markets, a comparative rating of programming languages in the labor market in Ukraine and in other countries was made. A survey of IT students and experienced programmers was conducted as another factor of the study. Based on many years of the authors' teaching experience and the result of analyzing the opinions of interviewed programmers, the requirements for the first programming language studied in universities by IT-students were determined. According to these requirements, a system of numerical evaluation of practical criteria for the first language programming selection among the most demanded ones was worked out. A total rating for each language was created in order to identify the most suitable programming language for teaching the beginners.

programming knowledge is more important than ever in the digital world. However, teaching programming can be challenging, especially with novice learners. Considerable research has been conducted into the most effective methods for teaching programming. Extreme apprenticeship, a variation of cognitive apprenticeship, is a method that has been used in teaching programming at university level in recent years. Because this method focuses particularly on completing lots of exercises with coaching and guidance, it may solve many problems related to learning programming. Flipped learning can be useful for student preparedness and providing sufficient theoretical knowledge at the beginning of the course. This study compares the applications of the extreme apprenticeship method, flipped extreme apprenticeship, and traditional classroom, analyzing them at the university level in terms of their effects on academic achievement and engagement coupled with gender differences. The findings of the study indicate that the extreme apprenticeship and flipped extreme apprenticeship instructional methods improve academic achievement and student engagement in introductory programming more than the traditional method. The results of the research point to important directions for the development of the extreme apprenticeship method in programming instruction and provide a guide for instructors.

In a technological age of great and rapid changes, for today's students are not enough to know how to use all new technologies. To face the difficult job market in the area of information technology, students must have programming skills. Especially in higher education, a large percentage of students manifest several difficulties, lack of motivation, and abandonment in the introductory programming courses. It is important that students and teachers have good feedback on their activities and developments in the teaching and learning process. In this paper, we describe a tool to help the teaching and learning introductory programming - HTprogramming. We also present the results of its use in the classroom and the application of a predictive model of machine learning (neural network) of student failure based on the student's profile. The resulting tool allows teachers to effectively track the entire teaching and learning process and early identify students that are most likely to fail, allowing them to devote more time to those students and try new strategies to improve their programming skills.
