Optimizing electric discharge machining (EDM) for aluminum/SiCp metal matrix composites poses challenges due to intricate machine parameters and process complexity, impacting process economy and elevating product costs. The research aims to find the optimal combination of process parameters which include pulse on-time, pulse current, duty cycle (%), gap voltage, sensitivity and flushing pressure for EDM of Al/SiCp-MMC using a copper electrode for the selected response factors such as material erosion rate and surface roughness, Ra. The experiments were designed using the central composite design of response surface methodology and an advanced optimization technique known as teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO), is applied to find the optimal combination of process parameters to obtain maximum material erosion rate subject to the desired range of surface roughness (SR), Ra. The combination of the high pulse on-time (i.e. 150 mu s) and high pulse current (i.e. 12A) results in high material removal rate with deep craters on the machined surface clearly visible in SEM images contrasting the minimized surface roughness at lower values of pulse on-time (50 mu s) and the pulse current (4A). Pulse on - time (Ton) is found to be the most significant factor for material erosion rate and surface roughness with percentage contribution of 70.86 and 54.9 respectively for optimization of the response. The regression models were developed at 95% confidence level for material removal rate and surface roughness with R2 value of 0.93 and 0.95 respectively signifying high degree of accuracy in predicting the response. Confirmation tests conducted to check the adequacy of the established models revealed that the percentage error between the predicted and experimental responses is found to be within acceptable levels. A modified teaching learning metaheuristic algorithm with opposite-based learning for permutation flow-shop scheduling problem

teaching-learning-based optimization is one of the well-known metaheuristic algorithm in the research industry. Recently, various population-based algorithms have been developed for solving optimization problems. In this paper, a random scale factor approach is proposed to modify the simple TLBO algorithm. Modified teaching-learning-based optimization with Opposite-based-learning algorithm is applied to solve the Permutation Flow-Shop-Scheduling Problem with the purpose of minimizing the makespan. The OBL approach is used to enhance the quality of the initial population and convergence speed. PFSSP is used extensively for solving scheduling problem, which belongs to the category of NP-hard optimization problems. First, MTLBO is developed to effectively determine the PFSSP using the Largest Order Value rule-based random key, so that individual job schedules are converted into discrete schedules. Second, new initial populations are generated in MTLBO using the Nawaz-Enscore-Ham heuristic mechanism. Finally, the local exploitation ability is enhanced in the MTLBO using effective swap, insert and inverse structures. The performance of proposed algorithm is validated using ten benchmark functions and the Wilcoxon rank test. The computational results and comparisons indicate that the proposed algorithm outperformed over five well-known datasets such as Carlier, Reeves, Heller, Taillards and VRF benchmark test functions, compared to other metaheuristic algorithms. Thep-value indicated the significance and superiority of the proposed algorithm over other metaheuristic algorithms.

In allusion to the shortcoming of global exploration performance of basic teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO) algorithm in solving complex high-dimensional problems, a modified teaching-learning-based optimization (MTLBO) algorithm is proposed. In MTLBO algorithm, the methods of teaching phase and learning phase are respectively modified to enhance to disturbance potential of search space, and a new "Self-learning" method is presented to enhance the innovation ability of the learner and the global exploration performance. Finally, the performance of the proposed MTLBO algorithm is investigated over 6 complex high-dimensional benchmark functions. The results show that the proposed MTLBO algorithm has some advantages over convergence velocity, accuracy, and stability.

Procedure for the Determination of the Appropriate Protective Foil Size to Reduce Step Voltage Using a FEM Model and Evolutionary Methods

Featured Application This work offers a practical approach to determining the optimal size of protective foil in cases of excessive step voltage. A procedure is shown that allows for the optimal width of the foil to be determined with a minimum number of used FEM models. The procedure contains guidelines for the implementation of the FEM model, defines the most appropriate function of the dependence of the step voltage on the width of the foil, and determines the evolutionary method that is most appropriate for determining the parameters of the said *** When a fault occurs in a power transmission system, voltages that are dangerous to people may occur. The aim of this work is to present the following method of protection: the use of protective foil installed at the appropriate depth around the transmission pole. Moreover, a procedure is presented for determining the optimal size of the protective film using a minimum number of finite element method calculations. In addition to the finite element method, evolutionary methods are used to determine the appropriate coefficients. Real earthing system data, earth data, and the fault current are obtained from the Slovenian system operator (ELES, d.o.o.) and used exclusively in the presented analyses. The results of determining the appropriate size of the protective foil for two transmission poles are presented, and the determination of the required breakthrough strength of the materials used is shown. The suitability of the proposed method is confirmed. This method is practical and useful when protection with protective foil is required, ensuring only as much as necessary is applied.

Artificial intelligence driven advanced optimization strategy vis-a-vis response surface optimization of production medium: Bacterial exopolysaccharide production as a case- study

In the present study, Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven multivariate-optimization strategy, hybrid-support vector machine (h-SVM) was employed and compared with conventional response surface methodology (RSM) in terms of its performance efficiency to optimize the medium composition for improved exopolysaccharide (EPS) production by a thermophilic isolate of Bacillus licheniformis. Firstly, the application of Plackett-Burman design and analysis indicated that sucrose, KH2PO4 and NaCl have significant positive effects, whereas NaNO3 showed a significant negative effect on EPS production. Then, experimental data of a central-composite design was leveraged by RSM and the h-SVM to optimize these significant variables. SVM showed better performance in data modeling (R-2 = 0.9874, Root-mean-square error = 0.693) compared to conventional RSM. Subsequently, the SVM model was coupled with optimization algorithms, teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO) and Particle swarm optimization (PSO). As a result, a maximum EPS concentration of 64 +/- 1.1 g L. was obtained from h-SVM predicted model (SVM-PSO, SVM-TLBO), which is about a 5-fold increase in EPS production to that obtained with the un-optimized medium. Within our knowledge, this is the first report on the implementation of SVM-TLBO to improve the production of bioproducts like bacterial EPS while comparing it with other techniques like SVM-PSO and RSM.

An optimal extreme learning-based classification method for power quality events using fractional Fourier transform

Mitigation of power quality events (PQEs) needs an accurate, faster, and efficient detection and classification technique for designing the compensating devices as a remedial measure to the problem. This study motivates on this issue to formulate a better technique based on fractional Fourier transform (FRFT) and extreme learning machine (ELM). FRFT is considered for relevant feature extraction due to its characteristics like enhanced order control and capability to provide time, frequency, and intermediate time-frequency depictions for any non-stationary power signals. The possibility of multi-domain feature extraction capability due to its easy order control arrives at a robust feature matrix, which makes the classification more accurate. An optimal ELM-based classifier is designed by tuning its system parameters applying modified teaching-learning-based optimization (MTLBO). This optimal ELM is implemented in this study along with FRFT to formulate the proposed approach denoted as FRFT-MTLBO-ELM. To give a good reason for the enhanced performance of the proposed technique, noisy and hybrid synthetic signals of ten PQEs are generated and tested considering fully all real-time condition cases. At last, a comparative result is presented with other applied signal processing-based approaches and it is found that the proposed FRFT-MTLBO-ELM approach is very effective and comparatively better justifying its real-time implementation in the monitoring systems.

Optimum design of grillage structures to LRFD-AISC with teaching-learning based optimization

In this paper, a new efficient optimization algorithm called teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO) is used for the optimum design of grillage systems based on the LRFD-AISC (Load and Resistance Factor Design-American Institute of Steel Construction). Cross sectional area of W-shapes are considered as discrete design variables. Various grillage structures are designed to show the efficiency of the TLBO algorithm. The results obtained from this study are compared with those reported in the literature. It is concluded that the TLBO algorithm presented in this study can be effectively used in the optimal design of grillage structures.

An Amalgamated Novel IDS Model for Misbehaviour Detection using VeReMiNet

Vehicle ad hoc networks (VANETs) are gaining popularity because they can potentially increase traffic efficiency with road safety in cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITS). Effective vehicle deployment requires the identification of nodes providing false data. Researchers have focused much of their attention on an important issue called misbehaviour detection for disseminating false data about vehicle information (position, time, speed and vehicle id) in VANETs. It can threaten the security and privacy of the network and cause some problems, including accidents, collisions, and traffic congestion. There are more works have been proposed based on machine learning methods. However, all of the machine learning-based detection models used currently are signature-based, necessitating previous knowledge of the attacks to identify them and also requiring numerous features, which increases the computational time needed to detect attacks and to select the high-performing features;this works a marine predator algorithm based on teaching-learning. The article provides a unique deep learning strategy to recognize the position falsification attacks in VANETs to find hidden patterns from the data for fighting against known and emerging threats. We evaluate our method using a publicly accessible VeReMi dataset, demonstrating that it achieves high detection accuracy of 99.55% for various attacks. According to our findings, our method can be useful for enhancing VANET security and assuring vehicular communications' reliable and secure functioning.

Design and optimization for a New XYZ Micropositioner with Embedded Displacement Sensor for Biomaterial Sample Probing Application

An XYZ compliant micropositioner has been widely mentioned in precision engineering, but the displacements in the X, Y, and Z directions are often not the same. In this study, a design and optimization for a new XYZ micropositioner are developed to obtain three same displacements in three axes. The proposed micropositioner is a planar mechanism whose advantage is a generation of three motions with only two actuators. In the design strategy, the proposed micropositioner is designed by a combination of a symmetrical four-lever displacement amplifier, a symmetrical parallel guiding mechanism, and a symmetrical parallel redirection mechanism. The Z-shaped hinges are used to gain motion in the Z-axis displacement. Four flexure right-circular hinges are combined with two rigid joints and two flexure leaf hinges to permit two large X-and-Y displacements. The symmetrical four-lever displacement amplifier is designed to increase the micropositioner's travel. The displacement sensor is built by embedding the strain gauges on the hinges of the micropositioner, which is developed to measure the travel of the micropositioner. The behaviors and performances of the micropositioner are modeled by using the Taguchi-based response surface methodology. Additionally, the geometrical factors of the XYZ micropositioner are optimized by teaching-learning-based optimization. The optimized design parameters are defined with an A of 0.9 mm, a B of 0.8 mm, a C of 0.57 mm, and a D of 0.7 mm. The safety factor gains 1.85, while the displacement achieves 515.7278 mu m. The developed micropositioner is a potential option for biomedical sample testing in a nanoindentation system.
