This paper presents the evolution of the energy power supply of telecommunication systems. The exchange and transmission equipment, centralized or distributed, need less and less power. The power is essentially used under electronic voltage (80 % under 5 V and 3 V for new technologies and some 12 V). Only 20 % of the power is delivered under 54 V for the remote power supply of the subscriber line. This voltage is no longer useful for the GSM radio network and FTTC optical network. Until now, the standardized voltage interface 48 V or 60 V remains the reference for telecommunication equipment. This voltage is supplied by decentralized DC cabinets having 1 hour autonomy, installed near the system or even integrated in the system itself. These cabinets are powered by the high availability GEODE AC source under 3 phase AC 400 V voltage of the public mains. Associated computers for complementary services, are powered by UPS providing an autonomy of 10 to 15 min. The standardized interface with the equipment is in this case the single phase public AC mains 230 V voltage. So, in the same centers, two uninterrupted power sources, DC 48 V and AC 230 V, run together with two standardized voltage interfaces, DC and AC. The TENOR project's aim is the unification of these two power supply methods with a single AC interface applicable to any size of installation. This result can be achieved through the new concept of distributed energy storage.< >

Resources on the Move for Smart City: A Disruptive Perspective on the Grand Convergence of Sensing, Communications, computing, Storage, and Intelligence

The most commonly seen things on streets in any city are vehicles. However, most of them are used to transport people or goods. What if they also carry resources and capabilities for sensing, communications, computing, storage, and intelligence (SCCSI)? We would have a web of sensors to monitor the city, a network of powerful communicators to transport data around, a grid of computing power to conduct data analytics and machine learning (ML), a network of distributed storage to buffer/cache data/job for optimization, and a set of movable AI/ML toolboxes made available for specialized smart applications. This perspective article presents information on leveraging SCCSI-empowered vehicles to design such a service network, simply called SCCSI network, to help build a smart city with a cost-effective and sustainable solution. It showcases how multi-dimensional technologies -namely, sensing, communications, computing, storage, and intelligence -converge to a unifying technology to solve grand challenges for resource demands from emerging large-scale applications. Thus, with SCCSI-empowered vehicles on the ground, over the air, and on the sea, SCCSI networks can make resources and capabilities on the move, practically pushing SCCSI services to the edge! We hope this article serves as a spark to stimulate more disruptive thinking to address grand challenges of paramount importance.

The telecommunications Management Networks (TMN) have been evolving and becoming more sophisticated. Different technologies from different vendors contribute to complicate the telecommunication management so that the need for integration and interoperability is growing. A general TMN computing platform architecture was proposed by the TMN computing Platform Special Interest Group, comprising representatives from RACE projects GUIDELINE, ADVANCE, AIM, NEMESYS and ROSA. Its main objective is to provide enough support for the contrasting TMN management applications. This paper is about the computing platform architecture developed in the MASI Laboratory, called IDEA, and its relationship with this general TMN computing platform architecture. In both instances, IDEA architecture and general architecture, the support services are identified and the correspondence between them is made.

This paper discusses MSA; a Mobility Support Architecture for IP nodes on a wireless telecommunication network. MSA has the capability of performing IP node location management, address resolution from an IP address to an identification number of a node on a wireless telecommunication network, and virtual circuit control across IP subnetworks. MSA avoids redundant mobility management, and provides efficient routing to IP nodes on a wireless telecommunication network. In order to accomplish the optimal route between IP nodes, MSA cooperates with the route optimization mechanism of IETF Mobile IP. As a result, MSA realizes an IP node on a wireless telecommunication network, which communicates optimally with other IP nodes on a wireless telecommunication network and other networks without any extensions except for a wireless telecommunication network interface module. We implemented a prototype system based on a kind of PCS. This paper concludes that MSA proposes a new mobile IP mechanism suitable for IP nodes on wireless telecommunication network environments and proves its efficiency through measurement and consideration.

Sequential network simulation is a high time-consuming application, and with the emergence of global multihop networks and gigabit-per-second links is becoming a non-affordable problem with traditional simulations. New techniques for the acceleration of these simulations based on other hardware architectures are required. Previous approaches to simulation acceleration are based on parallel computing and reconfigurable completing. A short review of most outstanding approaches showing its benefits and problems is presented in the paper. A new approach based on mapping network simulations on reconfigurable hardware is presented. Most important features of this system are: the acceleration of the simulation by hardware, and the use of a high level network modeling language which allows a transparent use of the hardware by telecommunication engineers. The core of the proposed environment is an automatic tool that compiles the high-level network model and maps the simulator behaviour into the hardware.

Heterogeneous traffic types compete for access to a shared resource (satellite channel, bus, etc.). If a packet is not immediately given access to the resource, it waits in a buffer, which is assumed to be infinite. The traffic types are partitioned into two groups: interactive and noninteractive, and the average delay of each of the interactive types is required below given thresholds. The problem of finding an optimal scheduling policy that minimizes a linear combination of the average delays for the noninteractive types while meeting the design constraints is considered. Simple necessary and sufficient conditions are derived for the existence of a policy that satisfies the constraints. An algorithm is given that decomposes the traffic types into an ordered arrangement of groups, and the existence of a policy that gives strict priority accordingly is established. Under weak conditions on the costs and rates, it is shown that all optimal policies must have this structural property. Sensitivity and aggregation analyses are given. An optimal policy is constructed and is shown to have many appealing properties.< >

This paper is a critique of major weaknesses of current techniques for analyzing the reliability of computer communication networks. Several of the most important factors influencing the reliability seen by users of such systems have been almost completely ignored or modeled in a rudimentary fashion. Ignoring such factors may be partially justified by the inherent complexity of the problems being studied, which often precludes exact computations being feasible for networks of any size, even with simplifying assumptions. Nevertheless, the results of models which ignore such factors are questionable even if they are computable. The focus of models of such networks should be on the effects of system malfunctions, degraded performance, excessive delays, etc., on system users. New approximate modeling techniques appear to be the most realistic approach to studying such problems.

Modern business enterprises depend on computer-processed transactions. As the computer's role becomes more pervasive, businesses are attempting to warehouse huge volumes of historical data with the expectation of mining it for knowledge. These businesses hope to determine trends and patterns that could improve their organization's effectiveness, efficiency, and prospects. A large-scale telecommunication network, such as that of AT&T, processes many transactions that vary greatly over time. In this article, we examine how to warehouse data about faulty network behavior and how to later mine it to find trends and patterns that characterize current and future network behavior. Modern communication networks' increasing size and complexity will require intelligent systems to help manage and maintain them. For optimum efficiency, these systems should analyze and resolve problems in the network automatically. In addition, they should identify potentially serious problems before such problems degrade network performance. In this way, intelligent systems can greatly improve the network's reliability and quality. However, this can be extremely difficult. For example, AT&T's worldwide network is a massively interconnected structure of several complex devices with over a million different paths or circuits. During any day, millions of transmissions may occur over this network. Many sophisticated computer systems and devices interact to achieve extremely high reliability. There are various aspects of managing and maintaining such a network, including provisioning various services, managing resources and traffic, proactively maintaining the network, and troubleshooting different kinds of problems. Artificial intelligence techniques have proven useful in building systems that automate network management and maintenance. A mobile traffic load prediction based on recurrent neural network: A case of telecommunication in Afghanistan

This paper investigates the prediction of mobile traffic load based on four variants of recurrent neural networks, which are the simple long short-term memory (LSTM), stacked LSTM, gated recurrent unit (GRU) and bidirectional LSTM. In the considered schemes, the mobile traffic load of 15 min ahead of time is estimated based on the previous mobile traffic load data. The performance of the proposed scheme is verified using realistic traffic load data collected from the base station located in Kabul city, Afghanistan, which belongs to the SALAAM telecommunication operator during December 2020 and January 2021. Through performance evaluation, the authors confirm that the traffic load can be predicted with high accuracy using considered schemes and the GRU-based scheme outperforms other schemes in terms of accuracy.
