Nowadays, software systems are interconnected to enhance the user experience and attract new users. As such, software developers require a standard for exchanging information to streamline their work, leading to the creation of APIs. In the software development life cycle, it is essential to have documentation that outlines the software's requirements and functionality, known as a software specification. Similarly, APIs should have standardized documentation to help software developers understand their components, such as parameters, request bodies, responses, and endpoints. This is why the OpenAPI Initiative developed the OpenAPI specification. Moreover, APIs often connect with databases that store information. Relational databases have rules known as database constraints, which ensure the accuracy of stored data. When developing APIs, software testers play a crucial role, especially considering the widespread use of APIs. Software testers may have a different approach to generating test cases, potentially leading to gaps in coverage, particularly regarding database constraints. This paper proposes an approach for generating RESTful API test scripts that account for database constraints using the OpenAPI specification. This approach will be compatible with automated API testing tools, allowing software testers to achieve results more quickly and efficiently.

Smells in software test code: A survey of knowledge in industry and academia

As a type of anti-pattern, test smells are defined as poorly designed tests and their presence may negatively affect the quality of test suites and production code. test smells are the subject of active discussions among practitioners and researchers, and various guidelines to handle smells are constantly offered for smell prevention, smell detection, and smell correction. Since there is a vast grey literature as well as a large body of research studies in this domain, it is not practical for practitioners and researchers to locate and synthesize such a large literature. Motivated by the above need and to find out what we, as the community, know about smells in test code, we conducted a 'multivocal' literature mapping (classification) on both the scientific literature and also practitioners' grey literature. By surveying all the sources on test smells in both industry (120 sources) and academia (46 sources), 166 sources in total, our review presents the largest catalogue of test smells, along with the summary of guidelines/techniques and the tools to deal with those smells. This article aims to benefit the readers (both practitioners and researchers) by serving as an "index" to the vast body of knowledge in this important area, and by helping them develop high-quality test scripts, and minimize occurrences of test smells and their negative consequences in large test automation projects. Distributed software development is becoming the norm as it is considered a more cost effective way of building software. Organizations seek to reduce development time with concurrent teams spread across geographical spaces as they jointly collaborate in designing, building, and testing the evolving software artefacts. However, the software evolution process is not an easy task, and requires many iterations of testing for ongoing verification and validation with some pre-determined design quality criteria. This is further complicated in distributed teams which interact over lean virtual platforms. This study investigates a distributed environment spread across Japan, India, and New Zealand to inform on how managed test lab model (MTLM) is used to facilitate quality assurance practices for testing of the evolving artefacts within the overall software development lifecycle process. The paper describes the operational aspects of using MTLM as an online framework in which responsibilities are assigned, test scripts are executed, and validation processes are formalized with appropriate use of toolkits to coordinate allocated task breakdowns across the three countries.

During the testing stage in the software development life cycle, developers can take advantage of combining the requirements specification with the testing specification. This will allow the specification of the tests to require less manual effort, since, they can be defined or generated automatically from the requirements specification. The requirements specification will thus be based on a more structured language, gaining in quality and reducing ambiguity, inconsistency, and inaccuracy. In this research work, the UI-test model-based methodological framework and its tool support are proposed. Both of these can generate evidence based on the specification of agile user stories that are used in the validation of the functional requirements that must be included in the final version of the user interfaces of the developed software. Our proposal makes use of two model transformations to obtain the test scripts from user stories that will be applied in the process using SikuliX for automated visual UI testing. The results of the empirical evaluation of the effectiveness and user experience of the framework and its tool support suggest that the UI-test tool can benefit testers by confirming that the actions proposed in the user stories can be run on the UIs.

The following paper proposes a solution to bridging the ontological gap between the conceptual test specification on the one side and the test implementation on the other. The cause of the gap is the different ontologies used on each side and the different levels of granularity. Whereas on the conceptual side, the ontology of the application is used, and that at an abstract level, on the implementional side, the ontology of the technical architecture is used at a very detailed level. The author proposes here a solution by which the conceptual level is brought down to a level corresponding to the implementation level and with which the notions of both sides are explicitly linked to one another. The key concepts are objects and use cases.

In the prevailing competitive environment, companies are facing tremendous market pressures to launch defect-free-products in a timely manner. This challenge is compounded when a product runs into sustenance phase because complete regression runs need to be performed for each change/enhancement made in every build/release of the product-under-test. This paper discusses an architectural framework approach to address the above challenge, thereby aiming to make regression testing a simple, repeatable and automated exercise. The framework design encapsulates hierarchical test case management multi-user support, product version maintenance, and automated test execution and result analysis to facilitate easy testing. The open architecture of the framework allows it to augment capabilities of some other testing tools by providing adapters to them, thus, eliminating the rigidity of use of a particular tool. The paper also draws a comparison of the architectural approach with other existing frameworks and presents a cost-benefit analysis of the suggested approach.
