Multidimensional test coverage analysis: PARADIGM-COV tool

Currently, software tends to assume increasingly critical roles in our society so assuring its quality becomes ever more crucial. There are several tools and processes of software testing to help increase quality in virtually any type of software. One example is the so calledmodel-based testing (MBT) tools, that generate test cases from models. Pattern Based Graphical User Interface testing (PBGT) is an example of a MBT new methodology that aims at systematizing and automating the Graphical User Interface (GUI) testing process. It is supported by a Tool (PBGT Tool) which provides an integrated modeling and testing environment for crafting test models based on User Interface test Patterns (UITP) using a GUI modeling Domain Specific Language (DSL) called PARADIGM. Most of the MBT tools have a configuration phase, where test input data is provided manually by the tester, which influences the quality of the test suite generated. By adding coverage analysis to MBT tools, it is possible to give feedback and help the tester to define the configuration data needed to achieve the most valuable test suite as possible and, ultimately, contribute for increasing the quality of the software. This paper presents a multidimensional test coverage analysis approach and tool (PARADIGM-COV), developed in the context of the PBGT project, that produces coverage information both over the PARADIGM model elements and during test case execution (to identify the parts of the model that were actually exercised). It also presents a case study illustrating the benefits of having multidimensional analysis and assessing the overall test coverage approach.

We propose a novel test coverage analysis technique for object-oriented programs. Our technique consists of three phases: graph construction, instrumentation, and coverage analysis. In the graph construction phase, the source program is converted into a dependence graph-based representation, named Call-based Object-Oriented System Dependence Graph (COSDG). In the instrumentation phase, the source code is instrumented at specific points. During the coverage analysis phase, the instrumented source code is executed for different test inputs, and the edges of COSDG are marked by the graph marker Various coverage measures are computed from the marked COSDG by the coverage analyzer to finally produce a coverage report. Inheritance and polymorphic coverage are considered in addition to traditional coverage measures.

Software testing is a necessary process in software development life cycle to verify if the developed software follows its specification. One important thing of the testing process is test coverage analysis because defects may exist in uncovered parts and emerge when users try to use them. test coverage analysis is performed to measure the comprehensiveness or thoroughness of testing. It is necessary and can be applied at every level of testing process. Nowadays, the object-oriented software is gaining interest in software industry which the test method differs from the conventional software, so some of available techniques and tools cannot be applied to object-oriented software. This paper proposes design of a tool for checking integration testing coverage of object-oriented software which can check the integration testing coverage of object oriented software and generate additional test cases in case of the existing test cases cannot cover the code.

One of main points of software testing is test coverage analysis because defects may exist in uncovered parts and appear when users use the software. test coverage analysis is one process which is used for solving the uncovered testing. This process consists of code instrumentation, collecting coverage data during test execution, and analyzing the coverage measure. test coverage analysis has to be applied with every level of testing. In addition, it has to be performed to conventional software and object-oriented software. Nowadays, object-oriented software is more interesting. However, we cannot use existing integration testing coverage measures with object-oriented software. In our previous paper, we propose the design of a tool for analyzing integration testing coverage for object-oriented software. This paper we continue our work by proposing an integration testing coverage tool for object-oriented software. This tool can analyze the integration testing coverage of object-oriented software. Moreover, it can generate additional test cases in case of there are uncovered methods that have not been tested by existing test cases.

test coverage analysis of exception handling features is a nontrivial task, since exception handling constructs introduce implicit control flow in programs. In this paper, we present a model-based technique for coverage analysis of exception handling features in object-oriented programs. Our technique is based on our previous work on coverage analysis. We first propose a program model, Augmented Call-based Object-Oriented System Dependence Graph (ACSD), and describe its construction. The ACSD represents the structural aspects of the exception handling mechanism, as well as intra-procedural and inter-procedural exceptional control and data flows. We propose several coverage measures specific to exception handling, and apply coverage-on-the-fly technique to the ACSD to determine those coverage measures. We also present the results of the experiments carried out using a prototype tool to demonstrate the efficacy of our ACSD model and coverage technique.

Constructing component-based software using reusable components is becoming a widely used approach. Since the quality of a component-based system is highly dependent on the quality of its components, component quality validation becomes very critical to both component vendors and users. Effectively validating component quality needs adequate test models and testing coverage criteria. This paper proposes an adequate test model and test coverage criteria for component validation. The paper discusses a dynamic approach to analyze component test coverage based on the proposed test model and test coverage criteria. The major contribution of this paper is its dynamic test coverage analysis solution to monitor API-based component validation and reuse. The paper reports the recent development efforts of a component test coverage analysis tool, and presents an application example. Many modern systems are state-based. For such systems, a system state model is important not only for understanding the behavior of the system, but also for test case design, test coverage analysis, maintenance, etc. However, developers rarely construct the system state model for practical systems because it is usually too complex and cumbersome to construct. On the other hand, developers normally construct the state models of individual classes. We propose a novel method to automatically synthesize the state model of a system by analyzing the different sequences of scenarios and determining whether these lead to any state changes of the individual objects.
