Test flakiness (non-deterministic behavior of test cases) is an increasingly serious concern in industrial practice. However, there are relatively little research results available that systematically address the analysis and mitigation of this phenomena. The dominant approach to handle flaky tests is still detecting and removing them from automated test executions. However, some reports showed that the amount of flaky test is in many cases so high that we should rather start working on approaches that operate in the presence of flaky tests. In this work, we investigate how test flakiness affects the effectiveness of Spectrum Based Fault Localization (SBFL), a popular class of software Fault Localization (FL), which heavily relies on test case execution outcomes. We performed a simulation based experiment to find out what is the relationship between the level of test flakiness and fault localization effectiveness. Our results could help the users of automated FL methods to understand the implications of flaky tests in this area and to design novel FL algorithms that take into account test flakiness.

High-quality test data that is useful for effective testing is often available on users' site. However, sharing data owned by users with software vendors may raise privacy concerns. Techniques are needed to enable data sharing among data owners and the vendors without leaking data privacy. Evolving programs bring additional challenges because data may be shared multiple times for every version of a program. When multiple versions of the data are cross-referenced, private information could be inferred. Although there are studies addressing the privacy issue of data sharing for testing and debugging, little work has explicitly addressed the challenges when programs evolve. In this paper, we examine kb-anonymity that is recently proposed for anonymizing data for a single version of a program, and identify a potential privacy risk if it is repeatedly applied for evolving programs. We propose kb(e)-anonymity to address the insufficiencies of kb-anonymity and evaluate our model on three Java programs. We demonstrate that kb(e)-anonymity can successfully address the potential risk of kb-anonymity, maintain sufficient path coverage for testing, and be as efficient as kb-anonymity.

Feature models are used to specify variability and commonality properties of software artifacts. In order to assure high-quality models, different feature model analysis and testing operations can be applied. In this paper, we present two new algorithms that help to make feature model configuration as well as different kinds of analysis operations more efficient. Specifically, we focus on the automated identification of redundancies in feature models and corresponding test suites. Redundant constraints in feature models can lead to low-performing configuration (solution) search and also to additional efforts in feature model debugging. Redundant feature model test cases can trigger inefficiencies in testing operations. In this paper, we introduce WipeOutR which is an algorithmic approach to support the automated identification of redundancies. This approach has the potential to significantly improve the quality of feature model development and configuration.

Finding a bug in the software is an expensive task, however, debugging is a crucial part of the software development life cycle. Spectrum-Based Fault Localization (SBFL) algorithms can reduce the time spent with debugging. Despite the fact that SBFL is a very well researched topic, there are not many tools that implement it. Many studies have dealt with the effectiveness of SBFL algorithms, although these have been evaluated on Java and C++ programming languages. We performed an empirical study on JavaScript programs (using BugsJS benchmark) to evaluate the relationship between algorithms efficiency and the bug-fix types. First we implemented three popular SBFL approaches, i.e. Tarantula, Ochiai and DStar, then examined whether there was a correlation/connection between the positions of the faulty methods in the suspiciousness ranks and bug-fix types. Results show that certain bug-fix types can be significantly differentiated from the others (in both positive and negative direction) based on the fault localization effectiveness of the investigated algorithms.

Subtle bugs that only manifest in certain software configurations are notoriously difficult to correctly trace. Sometimes called Heisenbugs, these runtime variability flaws can result from invoking undefined behavior in languages like C and C++, or from compiler flaws. In this paper, we present a novel analysis technique for detecting and correctly diagnosing variability bugs' impact on a program through comparing control-affecting data flow across differently compiled program variants. Our UBet prototype dynamically derives a runtime control flow trace while tracing universal data flow for a program processing a given input, operating at a level of tracing completeness not achievable through similar dynamic instrumentation means. Sans compiler bugs or undefined behavior, every compile-time program configuration (i.e., compiler flags vary) should be semantically equivalent. Thus, any input for which a program variant produces inconsistent output indicates a variability bug. Our analysis compares control-affecting data flow traces from disagreeing program version runs to identify related input bytes and determine where in the program the processing variability originates. Though we initially demonstrate our technique on C++ variability bugs in Nitro, the American Department of Defense NITF (National Imagery Transmission Format) reference implementation parser, our approach applies equally to other programs and input types beyond NITF parsers. Finally, we sketch a path toward completing this work and refining our analysis, including evaluating parsers of other input formats.

Spectrum-based fault localization (SBFL) works well for single-fault programs but its accuracy decays for increasing fault numbers. We present FLITSR (Fault Localization by Iterative Test Suite Reduction), a novel SBFL extension that improves the localization of a given base metric specifically in the presence of multiple faults. FLITSR iteratively selects reduced versions of the test suite that better localize the individual faults in the system. This allows it to identify and re-rank faults ranked too low by the base metric because they were masked by other program elements. We evaluated FLITSR over method-level spectra from an existing large synthetic dataset comprising 75000 variants of 15 opensource projects with up to 32 injected faults, as well as method- and statement-level spectra from a new dataset with 326 true multi-fault versions from the Defects4J benchmark set containing up to 14 real faults. For all three spectrum types we consistently see substantial reductions of the average wasted efforts at different fault levels, of 30%-90% over the best base metric, and generally similarly large increases in precision and recall, albeit with larger variance across the underlying projects. For the method-level real faults, FLITSR also substantially outperforms GRACE, a state-of-the-art learning-based fault localizer.

Domain-Specific Languages (DSLs) help manage the growing complexity of systems by facilitating their description and execution or simulation via tailored languages. A large part of the development costs of a DSL comes from building the associated tools it requires, such as an editor or a debugger. To reduce these costs, the Language Server Protocol (LSP) and Debug Adapter Protocol (DAP) enable the creation of generic tooling interfaces which rely on standardized services exposed by languages. However, as these protocols have been designed for General Purpose Languages (GPLs), their applicability to DSLs has no yet been extensively studied. In this paper, we analyze both LSP and DAP, with an emphasis regarding their relevance for the development of tooling for DSLs. We provide both a high-level insight into these protocols, such as a dependency graph of their services, and a more fine-grained qualitative analysis of each service. We show that while some services defined by these two protocols can be provided by any DSL, others make strong assumptions on the concepts that should be part of the considered DSL. Conversely, domain-specific concepts available in some DSLs are not exploitable through these protocols, thus reducing the capabilities of generic tools.

There continue to be advances in the automation of Web application development, however testing these applications remains mainly a manual process. In this paper we present a methodology to test page flows using traditional test coverage criteria in conjunction with an automated testing tool. The criteria is applied in the context of page flows and transformed into: All Pages, All Actions;All Links, and All Forwards. We define a state-based model of the application using information from the page flow and then use this model as the basis for generating a script to be executed by the automated testing tool. This finite state machine (FSM) also models the various combinations of inputs associated with the user interface of the application. During execution of the script, test cases are randomly generated using the FSM along with textual input from a pre-defined data pool. The adequacy of the test coverage based on the criteria for the page flow is determined by analyzing the elements covered during execution of the test Script.

Test generation at the graphical user interface (GUI) level has proven to be an effective method to reveal faults. When doing so, a test generator has to repeatably decide what action to execute given the current state of the system under test (SUT). This problem of action selection usually involves random choice, which is often referred to as monkey testing. Some approaches leverage other techniques to improve the overall effectiveness, but only a few try to create human-like actions-or even entire action sequences. We have built a novel session-based recommender system that can guide test generation. This allows us to mimic past user behavior, reaching states that require complex interactions. We present preliminary results from an empirical study, where we use GitHub as the SUT. These results show that recommender systems appear to be well-suited for action selection, and that the approach can significantly contribute to the improvement of GUI-based test generation.

The development of robust software is a difficult undertaking and is becoming increasingly more important as applications grow larger and more complex. Although modern programming languages such as C++ and Java provide sophisticated exception handling mechanisms to detect and correct runtime error conditions, exception handling code must still be programmed with care to preserve application consistency. In particular, exception handling is only effective if the premature termination of a method due to an exception does not leave an object in an inconsistent state. We address this issue by introducing the notion of failure atomicity in the context of exceptions. We propose practical techniques to automatically detect and mask the nonatomic exception handling situations encountered during program execution. These techniques can be applied to applications written in various programming languages that support exceptions. We perform experimental evaluation on both C++ and Java applications to demonstrate the effectiveness of our techniques and measure the overhead that they introduce.
