This paper examines a time optimal control problem for a dielectrophoretic system. The system consists of a neutrally buoyant and neutrally charged particle in a chamber filled with a fluid flowing with a low Reynolds number. At the bottom of this chamber is a series of parallel electrodes with a controlled time-varying voltage. The voltage on the electrodes creates a time-varying nonuniform electric field inducing a dipole moment in the particle. This induced dipole moment interacts with the electric field to generate a force on the particle. There are two state variables x and y, where x is the position of the particle and y is the induced dipole moment in the particle. The system has two parameters alpha and c which depend on the electric characteristics of the particle and the ambient fluid. The parameter c is always positive by the laws of physics, but alpha can have either sign. We solve the time optimal control problem for this system when alpha >= 0 and y( 0) is arbitrarily prescribed.

Autonomous driving and electrification make over-actuation technologies more feasible and advantageous. Integrating autonomous driving with over-actuation allows for the effective use of their respective strengths, e.g., for studying energy and time optimal control. To model AVs, several vehicle coordinate systems have been used, e.g., Cartesian, Frenet and spatial coordinates. The present study aims to achieve energy and time optimal control of autonomous vehicles by using Frenet frame modelling and over-actuation. This study enhances the existing Frenet-based modeling by incorporating double-track dynamic vehicle models and torque vectoring. The problem is formulated in an optimal control framework, with carefully designed cost function terms and constraints. Two control strategies are examined, one for minimising travel time and the other for jointly optimising energy consumption and travel time. The results indicate that by considering both energy and time in the formulation, the energy consumption can be apparently reduced while the travel time is merely slightly increased.

In this paper, the mathematical derivation of a closed-form discrete optimal control law is presented. Unlike the well-known results for continuous plants, the closed-form time optimal control for discrete time plants was never attained. The recent work of Jingqing Han sheds lights on this problem and is introduced. In particular, a time optimal control law is constructed in the form of state feedback for a discrete time, double-integral plant by using the Isochronic Region method. This closed-form nonlinear state feedback clearly demonstrates that time optimal control in discrete time is not necessarily bang-bang control, i.e., the control signal does not always take on extreme values. In fact, this characteristic makes the new control law advantageous in engineering applications.

Semi-active actuators provide a good compromise between low energy consumption and high performance. Thus, they are deployed in many engineering applications, often combined with other actuators into complex systems requiring an integrated control concept for optimal performance. optimal control can be used to objectively evaluate the performance of such systems as well as to deduce optimal control input trajectories and optimal passive system designs. We present a novel approach which enables considering a broad class of semi-active actuators in optimal control problems via convex sets. This procedure is exemplarily depicted for semi-active limited-slip differentials which are used in automotive applications for lateral torque distribution. The performance benefit gained by installing a semi-active limited-slip differential at the rear axle of a vehicle is objectively quantified by numerically computing time-optimal trajectories on a racetrack via direct optimal control with Hermite-Simpson collocation. Although the overall problem remains nonconvex for this particular application, this procedure is a first step towards a fully convex implementation. By iteratively increasing the upper boundary for the differential torque in multiple optimisations, we identify the smallest upper differential torque boundary for optimal laps and determine the lap time sensitivity regarding this limit.

For time optimal control, the problem is first transformed into a finite dimensional optimization problem by using time stages of varying lengths to enable accurate switching, and then solved by iterative dynamic programming. In high dimensional systems we is necessary to ensure convergence to the global optimum. Incorporating penalty functions into the performance index and using an adequate number of stages can yield the global optimum. The use of a continuation approach, where the number of stages in an intermediate solution is systematically increased, appears to be more effective. Three linear systems are used to develop and to test the approaches.

The paper deals with the optimal synthesis for a class of linear time optimal control problems of decreasing order. The state-space properties and relationships between two neighboring problems within this class are studied. Based on these properties, a new approach is proposed for synthesis of time optimal control, requiring no description of the switching hyper surface. The approach consists of two main stages: first, the problems state spaces-are analyzed, and then the optimal control is obtained by using a multi-stage procedure within the considered class of problems.

Based on a fast on-line parameter estimation algorithm, a new adaptation procedure, applied to the time optimal current control of a thyristor converter loaded with a DC motor is presented. A time optimal current control algorithm ensures that in case of rated system parameter values a new steady state value is reached within a single current pulsation even when operating modes (continuous, discontinuous) are changed. In case of changed system parameter values, the proposed adaptation mechanism enables the current response to be completed within two current pulsations, thus keeping it time optimal and making it insensitive to parameter variations. Estimation and adaptation algorithms were verified by computer simulation and the results obtained are presented in the paper.

time optimal output transition for input constrained systems is a frequent requirement in many actuation systems. In the case of known and/or linear systems, techniques exist to determine the corresponding control input either analytically and/or experimentally. In other cases however, is a sufficiently precise model is available. Against this background this paper proposes a learning algorithmic approach to solve the issue for unknown nonlinear saturated systems. The proposed approach searches the fastest transition by setting a time optimal but unfeasible trajectory and using learning techniques to recover the nearest feasible one in some sense. To achieve this goal, the proposed approach performs twice a learning process. On one side, it determines by iterative learning control for each suggested trajectory either the optimal input if the trajectory is feasible or an error information if this is not the case. On the other side, a model free learning model generator is used to determine the best feasible reference trajectory.

Voltage sags are an important power quality problem. Enhancing compensating capability is the key technique in voltage sag compensators. In this paper, a transformer-less series voltage sag topology without energy storage capacitors is proposed first. This topology is cost-effective by eliminating the large injection transformer and energy storage capacitors that are used in conventional series injection devices. This topology can both be used in three-phase three-line and three-phase four-line systems, and can compensate symmetrical three-phase voltage sags down to 37%, or one or two phase sags down to zero if other at least one phase is rated. Secondly, this paper proposes and illustrates a new compensation control strategy named as time optimal control which aims to enlarging the compensating time during sags. Using the proposed method, it can be shown that voltage sags can be corrected for much longer time compared to that of existing energy optimal method, and this advantages will be more obvious when the maximum permissible DC link voltage is smaller or in deeper sags. Especially the compensating time during sags by using the proposed control strategy may be several times longer than that of using energy optimal control strategy in the case of lower DC link voltages, deeper sags, and larger load impedance angles. Simulation and experiment results demonstrate the good features.

To find a control function which puts the heat equation in an unknown minimum time into a stationary regime is considered. Using an embedding method, the problem of finding the time optimal control is reduced to one consisting of minimizing a linear form over a set of positive measures. The resulting problem can be approximated by a finite dimensional linear programming (LP) problem. The nearly optimal control is constructed from the solution of the final LP problem. To find the lower bound of the optimal time a search algorithm is proposed. Some examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the method. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.
