This paper introduces a novel approach for the segmentation, detection, and tracking small animals and insects like butterflies and squirrels using the YOLOv8 object detection model and Deep SORT tracking algorithm. With a high recall score of 0.9, the proposed methodology enables accurate detection and tracking of these creatures. tracking small insects and animals like butterflies and squirrels is crucial for understanding their ecology and implementing effective conservation strategies. The results demonstrate its ability to accurately track these creatures across diverse settings, including varying lighting conditions and backgrounds. The proposed methodology approach offers several advantages over existing methods. It enables tracking of both air and land-based creatures, surpasses the accuracy of hand-crafted feature-based approaches. The findings highlight the potential of our approach for butterfly and squirrel tracking, advancing ecological studies and contributing to species preservation. The Big Butterfly Count serves as a valuable resource for tracking butterflies and supporting their conservation efforts. © 2023 IEEE.

Applying Augmented Reality to Outdoors Industrial Use

Augmented Reality (AR) is currently gaining popularity in multiple different fields. However, the technology for AR still requires development in both hardware and software when considering industrial use. In order to create immersive AR applications, more accurate pose estimation techniques to define virtual camera location are required. The algorithms for pose estimation often require a lot of processing power, which makes robust pose estimation a difficult task when using mobile devices or designated AR tools. The difficulties are even larger in outdoor scenarios where the environment can vary a lot and is often unprepared for AR. This thesis aims to research different possibilities for creating AR applications for outdoor environments. Both hardware and software solutions are considered, but the focus is more on software. The majority of the thesis focuses on different visual pose estimation and tracking techniques for natural features. During the thesis, multiple different solutions were tested for outdoor AR. One commer- cial AR SDK was tested, and three different custom software solutions were developed for an Android tablet. The custom software solutions were an algorithm for combining data from magnetometer and a gyroscope, a natural feature tracker and a tracker based on panorama images. The tracker based on panorama images was implemented based on an existing scientific publication, and the presented tracker was further developed by integrating it to Unity 3D and adding a possibility for augmenting content. This thesis concludes that AR is very close to becoming a usable tool for professional use. The commercial solutions currently available are not yet ready for creating tools for professional use, but especially for different visualization tasks some custom solutions are capable of achieving a required robustness. The panorama tracker implemented in this thesis seems like a promising tool for robust pose estimation in unprepared outdoor environments.

Future changes in tropical cyclone properties are an important component of climate change impacts and risk for many tropical and midlatitude countries. In this study we assess the performance of a multimodel ensemble of climate models, at resolutions ranging from 250 to 25 km. We use a common experimental design including both atmosphere-only and coupled simulations run over the period 1950-2050, with two tracking algorithms applied uniformly across the models. There are overall improvements in tropical cyclone frequency, spatial distribution, and intensity in models at 25 km resolution, with several of them able to represent very intense storms. Projected tropical cyclone activity by 2050 generally declines in the South Indian Ocean, while changes in other ocean basins are more uncertain and sensitive to both tracking algorithm and imposed forcings. Coupled models with smaller biases suggest a slight increase in average TC 10 m wind speeds by 2050.

We investigate the problem of tracking mobile targets in wireless sensor networks. We propose an advanced auxiliary delayed-weight particle filter algorithm (ADWPF). We make a deep study on the evolvement of particles and formally define the tree-like structure relationship among particles based on observations. Most importantly, we add some auxiliary particles to these structures formed by sampled particles in order to obtain more efficient structures. Based on the newly tree-like structures formed by auxiliary particles and sampled particles, we design a well efficient delayed-weight algorithm with linear computation cost. Experiment results demonstrate that our algorithm can greatly improve the tracking accuracy of a mobile target, compared with bootstrap filter, auxiliary particle filter, and another delayed-weight particle filter.

RFID events are a large volume of stream data that continuously come out for tracking and monitoring objects. Many studies have been done to detect a complex event in the RFID stream. However, the existing studies have many problems which increase unnecessary operations when complex events do not satisfyminimum conditions. In this paper, we propose a new scheme to detect complex events when the minimum conditions are satisfied to remove unnecessary operations. To check the minimum conditions of the complex events, we register complex queries in a query index. We detect complex events using the query index and bitmap. To demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method, we compare it with the existing methods through various experiments. As a result, it is shown that the proposed method outperforms the existing methods as a whole.

This paper describes the track-finding algorithm that is used for event reconstruction in the Belle II experiment operating at the SuperKEKB B-factory in Tsukuba, Japan. The algorithm is designed to balance the requirements of a high efficiency to find charged particles with a good track parameter resolution, a low rate of spurious tracks, and a reasonable demand on CPU resources. The software is implemented in a flexible, modular manner and employs a diverse selection of global and local track-finding algorithms to achieve an optimal performance. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. Evaluation of Horizontal Single-Axis Solar Tracker algorithms in Terms of Energy Production and Operational Performance

Horizontal single-axis solar tracking systems with Astronomical tracking algorithm are commonly used in photovoltaic (PV) installations. However, different algorithms can increase the PV installation's performance without implementing new equipment or technologies. In this article, the performance of three tracking algorithms is compared to the Astronomical one. Two algorithms aim at optimizing the received irradiance focusing on the diffuse component. The third one, called Analytical, is presented as a new development in this study, defining the optimal inclination angle depending on all radiation components. The comparison focuses on different parameters like the in-plane irradiance, DC power output from a monofacial PV system and operational aspects like the performed number of movements. High-time-resolution (1 min) simulations are performed with proprietary software taking into account several effects on the effective irradiance and power output estimation, such as shading effects or PV configuration. Eight locations with different climatic conditions are analyzed. All three algorithms derive in higher in-plane irradiance and power output values than the Astronomical algorithm, although the gain depends on the climatic conditions. At locations with high diffuse fraction, the power output from the Analytical algorithm, which outperforms the others, can be up to 3% higher than the Astronomical one. Four tracking algorithms for one-horizontal-axis tracking system are studied under different climatic conditions. The in-plane irradiance, power output of a monofacial photovoltaic system, and the number of movements performed following the different algorithms are analysed. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) becomes a prevalent labeling and localizing technique in the recent years. Deploying indoor RFID localization systems facilitates many applications. Previous approaches, however, are most based on 2D design and cannot provide 3D location information. The lack of one-dimensional information may lead 2D-based systems to inaccurate localization. In this paper, we develop an indoor 3D RFID localization system based on active tag array. In particular, we employ the geometric mean to filter the explicit 3D location information with high accuracy. The experimental results show that our system is efficient in tracking objects and improving the localization accuracy.

Application of Circuit Model for Photovoltaic Energy Conversion System

Circuit model of photovoltaic (PV) module is presented in this paper that can be used as a common platform by material scientists and power electronic circuit designers to develop better PV power plant. Detailed modeling procedure for the circuit model with numerical dimensions is presented using power system blockset of MATLAB/Simulink. The developed model is integrated with DC-DC boost converter with closed-loop control of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm. Simulation results are validated with the experimental setup.
