Visual tracking via Feature Tensor Multimanifold Discriminate Analysis

In the visual tracking scenarios, if there are multiple objects, due to the interference of similar objects, tracking may fail in the progress of occlusion to separation. To address this problem, this paper proposed a visual tracking algorithm with discrimination through multimanifold learning. Color-gradient-based feature tensor was used to describe object appearance for accommodation of partial occlusion. A prior multimanifold tensor dataset is established through the template matching tracking algorithm. For the purpose of discrimination, tensor distance was defined to determine the intramanifold and intermanifold neighborhood relationship in multimanifold space. Then multimanifold discriminate analysis was employed to construct multilinear projection matrices of submanifolds. Finally, object states were obtained by combining with sequence inference. Meanwhile, the multimanifold dataset and manifold learning embedded projection should be updated online. Experiments were conducted on two real visual surveillance sequences to evaluate the proposed algorithm with three state-of-the-art tracking methods qualitatively and quantitatively. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve effective and robust effect inmulti-similar-object mutual occlusion scenarios.

idTracker: tracking individuals in a group by automatic identification of unmarked animals

Animals in groups touch each other, move in paths that cross, and interact in complex ways. Current video tracking methods sometimes switch identities of unmarked individuals during these interactions. These errors propagate and result in random assignments after a few minutes unless manually corrected. We present idTracker, a multitracking algorithm that extracts a characteristic fingerprint from each animal in a video recording of a group. It then uses these fingerprints to identify every individual throughout the video. tracking by identification prevents propagation of errors, and the correct identities can be maintained indefinitely. idTracker distinguishes animals even when humans cannot, such as for size-matched siblings, and reidentifies animals after they temporarily disappear from view or across different videos. It is robust, easy to use and general. We tested it on fish (Danio rerio and Oryzias latipes), flies (Drosophila melanogaster), ants (Messor structor) and mice (Mus musculus).

The development and testing of thermal signature tracking algorithms burdens the developer with a method of testing the algorithm's fidelity. Collected video is normally used for testing tracking algorithms to evaluate performance in a variety of configurations. Acquiring suitable volumes of collected video data in multiple configurations can be prohibitive. As an alternative to collected video, the development of accurate synthetic thermal infrared vehicle models are incorporated into background infrared scenes generated using the Digital Image and Remote Sensing Image Generation (DIRSIG) software package. Additional software models for thermally emissive targets and motion are being implemented. The goals are to accurately incorporate thermal signatures of moving targets into realistic radiometrically calibrated scenes. This aids in evaluating tracking algorithms using both visible and thermal infrared signatures for improved day and night detection capability. The software packages are integrated together to produce synthetic video.

In this paper we consider the problem of tracking the real-time positions of a diagnostic capsule in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Our solution is. a fully developed estimation algorithm that utilizes radio frequency signals converted to voltage on the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) output of an array of transceivers. We employed a modified form of the traditional radio-map based deterministic model that requires an estimate of initial position vector. Data capture was implemented with commercial off-the shelf transceivers featuring RSSI outputs. At the intermediate processing stages, trilateration was employed as a mathematical tool to determine the approximate 2-D coordinates of unknown capsule locations by linearizing the resulting equations. This approach facilitates a PC-based implementation of fully automated real-time position measurements by eliminating the need to measure angles. In the final algorithm based on non linear least squares approximations, the Newton's iteration of the resulting Jacobian matrices were used to generate a more accurate position coordinates. Test Results from laboratory experiments demonstrate the accuracy of the solution in the centimeter range. This results in a position tracking measurements with an average value error of less than 25%. This kind of results guarantees that our solution can be adapted into telemetry capsules for use in diagnosing intestinal malfunctions.

Computer vision and object tracking are becoming increasingly more important with a wide variety of applications in our daily life. Most of the available tracking systems are not compact enough to be mounted on small ground or aerial robots. Also, most of these systems are relatively expensive. The tracking system presented in this work is a compact low cost system which makes it suitable for weight sensitive applications. The proposed system is a commercial off the shelf android-based mobile device that is mounted on a pan/tilt gimbal. The system utilizes the camera and the processor of the mobile device to capture and process video frames. The tracking algorithm is a newly modified algorithm that combines three well known algorithms: SURF, CAMShift, Lucas-Kanade. Each of these algorithms is deployed at a different stage of the tracking process which yields a reliable real-time tracking system. The newly modified tracking algorithm was developed using OpenCV within an Android environment. An indoor lab experimental test showed that the system was able to track a (3cm x 5cm) object moving at a speed of 133cm/sec and placed 50 cm away from the system.

A novel approach for tracking of whispering gallery modes (WGM) in real-time for dielectric cavities used in sensing application is presented in this paper. Real-time tracking for the shifts of the WGM can be used to measure the physical quantity of interest precisely, under high repetition rates. The tracking algorithm is based on cross-correlation signal processing technique which has been proved to be accurate in WGM shifts detection. In order to achieve portability, the aforementioned real-time algorithm is implemented using a single-board re-configurable input-output hardware. The hardware platform used combines a real-time processor and a field programmable gate array (FPGA), it also allows for data exchange between them. The tracking algorithm's accuracy and real-time behavior is verified by preforming simulations based on experiments conducted on the dielectric cavity, where the cavity is used as a force sensor measuring mechanical compression. The light from a laser diode is tuned with rates up to 10 kHz and then tangentially coupled into the cavity to excite the WGM. Results show that shifts of the WGM are tracked by the algorithm providing real-time force readings.

Previous experiences during earthquake events emphasize the need for new technologies for real-time monitoring and assessment of facilities with high value nonstructural elements such as equipment or other contents. Moreover, there are substantial limitations to our ability to rapidly evaluate and identify potential hazard zones within a structure, exposing rescue workers, society and the environment to unnecessary risks. A real-time monitoring system, integrated with critical warning systems, would allow for improved channeling of resources. Ideally such a system would acquire all relevant data non-intrusively, at high rates and resolution and disseminate it with low latency over a trusted network to a central repository. This repository can then be used by the building owner and rescue workers to make informed decisions. In recognition of these issues, in this paper, we describe a methodology for image-based tracking of seismically induced motions. The methodology includes calibration, acquisition, processing, and analysis tools geared towards seismic assessment. We present sample waveforms extracted considering pixel-based algorithms applied to images collected from an array of high speed, high-resolution charged-couple-device (CCD) cameras. This work includes use of a unique hardware and software design involving a multi-threaded process, which bypasses conventional hardware frame grabbers and uses a software-based approach to acquire, synchronize and time stamp image data.

In neuroscience research, laboratory animals and especially monkeys are often used in experiments. Besides the neural signals provided by radio from a sensor array mounted on the monkey head, also the head position and orientation are needed for a complete analysis. In this paper, a monkey tracking and head orientation computation method is proposed. The procedure was validated using a database of four videos, visualizing experiments of a total duration of 3 hours and 48 minutes.

Kalman filters have been used as a robust method for object location prediction in various tracking algorithms for nearly a decade. More recently, adaptive and extended Kalman filters have been employed, making predictions even more reliable. The presented addition to this trend is the employment of a polynomial fit to the history of object locations, using the adaptive Kalman filter framework. This allows the linear state model of the adaptive Kalman filter to predict non-linear motion, making tracking more robust. This modified filter will be used in conjunction with the Mean Shift algorithm as the measurement step. Another important consideration when using a Kalman filter in this manner will be which correlation coefficient is used. The Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient is shown to provide more robust tracking when compared to the Bhattacharyya coefficient when objects have either low resolution or are unresolved.
