The latest multi-view video coding standard, MV-HEVC, efficiently represents multi-view video sequences, reducing the required network bitrate, and incorporates error resilience tools to maintain video quality even under adverse network conditions. This paper investigates the impact of random error propagation in the MV-HEVC Network Abstraction Layer (NAL) and presents a comprehensive analysis of MV-HEVC bitstream sensitivity under error-prone networks. The study identifies the most sensitive data within the MV-HEVC bitstream and proposes an intra-refresh transcoding scheme to enhance the robustness of the MV-HEVC bitstream transmission. Experimental results ensured better video quality under adverse network conditions with an improvement of 22 dB in the perceptual quality of received multi-view video with minimal performance overhead.

Short-form UGC video platforms, like Kwai and TikTok, have been an emerging and irreplaceable mainstream media form, thriving on user-friendly engagement, and kaleidoscope creation, etc. However, the advancing content-generation modes, e.g., special effects, and sophisticated processing workflows, e.g., de-artifacts, have introduced significant challenges to recent UGC video quality assessment: (i) the ambiguous contents hinder the identification of quality-determined regions. (ii) the diverse and complicated hybrid distortions are hard to distinguish. To tackle the above challenges and assist in the development of short-form videos, we establish the first large-scale Kwai short Video database for Quality assessment, termed KVQ, which comprises 600 user-uploaded short videos and 3600 processed videos through the diverse practical processing workflows, including preprocessing, transcoding, and enhancement. Among them, the absolute quality score of each video and partial ranking score among indistinguish samples are provided by a team of professional researchers specializing in image processing. Based on this database, we propose the first short-form video quality evaluator, i.e., KSVQE, which enables the quality evaluator to identify the quality-determined semantics with the content understanding of large vision language models (i.e., CLIP) and distinguish the distortions with the distortion understanding module. Experimental results have shown the effectiveness of KSVQE on our KVQ database and popular VQA databases. The project can be found at https://***/projects/KVQ/.

Business, education, and research have formed a strong connection with the Internet of Things (IoT), an open-access collective communication service offered by Internet-connected devices. Though it seems to be a good deal in terms of cost and functionality, it is still the most dangerous communication channel due to high hacking rates and the ease of high data loss. Even though contemporary software is becoming more sophisticated for data and security, it still needs greater protection in a real-time setting. Utilizing extensive security measures may increase safety, but doing so will jeopardize the real-time environment. This study introduces a highly efficient encryption framework that combines chaotic maps with the Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation (ADPCM) coding technique. The proposed algorithm ensures real-time secure communication for Internet of Things (IoT) applications while complying with ITU-T Recommendation Point G.726 and ANSI T1.303-1989 standards. It supports ADPCM transcoding algorithms at connection speeds of 16, 24, 32, and 40 kbps. The chaotic map technique was selected for its robust encryption capabilities using random variables and ADPCM for its high energy economy in transcoding and is characterized using two parallel encode functions per frame, which may be executed by small memory. The proposed encryption algorithm will perform three main operations. Firstly, it will be able to generate chaotic values from distinct initial conditions using two chaotic logistic maps. Secondly, it will transform these values into binary tables using a random encoding condition. Finally, it will execute the basic proposed ADPCM process to enhance security further.

This article is a response by the author to the contributions to the Historical Materialism symposium on Allegory and Ideology. The reply is framed in terms of the different theoretical strategies through which the articulation of 'Marx' and 'Freud' has been carried out, namely the precarious syntheses of Freudo-Marxism, the homological method pioneered by Lucien Goldmann, and the theory of allegorical levels and transcoding explored in Allegory and Ideology. It critically engages with the openings and challenges posed by the various contributions to the symposium, focusing in particular on matters of periodisation, and concluding with a reflection on how a theory of allegorical levels can be complemented by a materialist understanding of the 'category'.

In this paper, we propose a novel efficient digital twin (DT) data processing scheme to reduce service latency for multicast short video streaming. Particularly, DT is constructed to emulate and analyze user status for multicast group update and swipe feature abstraction. Then, a precise measurement model of DT data processing is developed to characterize the relationship among DT model size, user dynamics, and user clustering accuracy. A service latency model, consisting of DT data processing delay, video transcoding delay, and multicast transmission delay, is constructed by incorporating the impact of user clustering accuracy. Finally, a joint optimization problem of DT model size selection and bandwidth allocation is formulated to minimize the service latency. To efficiently solve this problem, a diffusion-based resource management algorithm is proposed, which utilizes the denoising technique to improve the action-generation process in the deep reinforcement learning algorithm. Simulation results based on the real-world dataset demonstrate that the proposed DT data processing scheme outperforms benchmark schemes in terms of service latency.

Emergency calling services are a cornerstone of public safety. During the last few years such systems are transitioning to VoIP and unified communications, and are continuously evolving under the umbrella of organizations, including NENA and EENA. The outcome of this effort is NG911 or NG112 services operating over the so-called Emergency Services IP network (ESInet). This work introduces and meticulously assesses the impact of an insidious and high-yield denial-of-service (DoS) attack against ESInet. Contrariwise to legacy SIP-based DoS, the introduced assault capitalizes on the SDP body of the SIP message with the sole purpose of instigating CPU-intensive transcoding operations at the ESInet side. We detail on the way such an attack can be carried out, and scrutinize on its severe, if not catastrophic, impact through different realistic scenarios involving a sufficient set of codecs. Finally, highlighting on the fact that 911 or 112 calls cannot be dropped, but need to be answered as fast as possible, we offer suggestions on how this kind of assault can be detected and mitigated.

Get Out does not conform to the general expectations of horror films but instead plays with, inverts, and makes light of horror tropes. The slasher subgenre is a recognizable form that recurs in the public imaginary, but what we see in this film is repetition with a difference that reveals how recurring patterns can be reiterated in destabilizing ways. Here the "return of the repressed" is monstrous whiteness and white supremacy, which have been denied, or disavowed, in a "postracial" culture. When they return, they literally consume Black bodies, commandeering them for white use. Through this reading of Get Out, I intend to rethink the trope of the "Final Girl" as it is positioned within the slasher subgenre and to consider how that position not only provides context for current political moments but also shifts in the horror genre itself.

Small unmanned aerial vehicles, commonly called drones, enable novel applications in many domains. Multidrone systems are a current key trend where several drones operate collectively as an integrated networked autonomous system to complete various missions. The specification and execution of multidrone missions are particularly challenging, since substantial expertise of the mission domain, the drone's capabilities, and the drones' software environment is required to properly encode the mission. In this position paper, we introduce a specification language for multidrone missions and describe the transcoding of its components into the multidrone execution environment for both simulations and real drones. The key features of our approach include (i) domain-independence of the mission specification, (ii) readability and ease of use, and (iii) expandability. The specification language has a simple syntax and uses a parameterized description of execution blocks and mission capabilities, which are derived from native drone functions. Domain-independence and expandability are provided by a clear separation between the specification and the implementation of the mission tasks. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach with a selected multidrone mission example.

Toward transcoding as a Service: Energy-Efficient Offloading Policy for Green Mobile Cloud

In this article we investigate energy-efficient offloading policy for transcoding as a service (TaaS) in a generic mobile cloud system. Computation on mobile devices can be offloaded to a mobile cloud system that consists of a dispatcher at the front end and a set of service engines at the back end. Particularly, a transcoding task can be executed on the mobile device (i.e. mobile execution) or offloaded and scheduled by the dispatcher to one of the service engines in the cloud (i.e. cloud execution). We aim to minimize the energy consumption of transcoding on the mobile device and service engines in the cloud while achieving low delay. For the mobile device, we formulate its offloading policy under delay deadline as a constrained optimization problem. We find an operational region on which execution mode, that is, mobile execution or cloud execution, is more energy efficient for the mobile device. For the cloud, we propose an online algorithm to dispatch transcoding tasks to service engines, with an objective to reduce energy consumption while achieving queue stability. By appropriately choosing the control variable, the proposed algorithm outperforms alternative algorithms, with lower time average energy consumption and time average queue length on the service engines. The proposed offloading policy can reduce energy consumption on both mobile devices and the cloud jointly, which provides guidelines for the design of green mobile cloud.
