In the coming years, the Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard will be launched to replace the current High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard, making it necessary to find efficient methods to convert existing multimedia content to the new format. However, transcoding is a complex pipeline composed of a decoding and an encoding process that involves long processing times. On the basis of the existing correlation between the block partitioning structures of both standards, this paper presents an HEVC-to-VVC transcoding scheme. The proposed method consists of a Naïve-Bayes classifier that assists the partitioning decision at the first level of quadtree by using features extracted from the $128\times 128$ pixel blocks of the residual and reconstructed frames in HEVC. The experimental results using random access configuration show an average transcoding time reduction of 13.38% at the cost of a compression efficiency loss of 0.32% in terms of BD-rate.

The media sector is constantly evolving and, in the last few years, such evolution has been driven by a number of convergence paradigms, notably, that between broadband and broadcast technologies with the introduction of IT and IP technology. The present trend is to switch totally from a closed niche that uses highly specialized equipment to off-the-shelf IT-centric solutions, offering easy configuration and remote operation. The aim is to enable common computers to be turned into highly capable media devices and act as connected objects adopting an IoT-like paradigm. This vision, though, is not implemented easily, given that most media industry professionals do not yet feel comfortable operating in the IT technology space and also due to the stringent requirements that exist in this industry. The Joint Task Force on Networked Media is defining specifications that aim at overcoming such existing barriers. In this article we present a novel solution that follows the guidelines delivered by this group to set up a remotely operated media production facility, totally based on IP and IT technology, constituting a step forward the realization of the IoT concept in professional media environments. The focus is on two complementary components, namely, the GUI Agent and the MW Agent, which are not covered by the defined specifications but that are crucial to speed up the deployment of concrete solutions that can be easily operated by non-IT and non-IP experts in a transparent and ubiquitous way.

High-Throughput JPEG2000 (HTJ2K) is a new addition to the JPEG2000 suite of coding tools; it has been recently approved as Part-15 of the JPEG2000 standard, and the JPH file extension has been designated for it. The HTJ2K employs a new “fast” block coder that can achieve higher encoding and decoding throughput than a conventional JPEG2000 (C-J2K) encoder. The higher throughput is achieved because the HTJ2K codec processes wavelet coefficients in a smaller number of steps than C-J2K. Moreover, the HTJ2K block coder is also more amenable to parallelizable high-speed software and hardware implementations. The HTJ2K retains most of the features and capabilities of JPEG2000, and it also supports lossless transcoding between HTJ2K and already compressed C-J2K images. Quality scalability however is more limited than C-J2K. In a recent work, we presented preliminary performance results for decoding HTJ2K images on a GPU. In this work, we present a GPU-based HTJ2K encoder; we also present early encoding results for such an encoder, showing that it is possible to encode 4K4:4:4 HDR videos at more than 70 frames per second (fps) on a low-end card, while a high-end GPU can encode such videos at more than 400 fps.

Recently, data-driven prediction strategies have shown the potential of shepherding the optimization strategies for end viewer's Quality-of-Experience in practical streaming applications. The current prediction-based designs have largely focused on optimizing the last-mile, i.e., viewer-side, which 1) need the real-time feedback from viewers to improve the prediction accuracy; and 2) need quick responses to guarantee the effectiveness of optimization strategies in the future. Thanks to the emerged crowdsourced livecast services, e.g., ***, we for the first time exploit the opportunity to realize the long-term prediction and optimization with the assistance derived from the first-mile, i.e., source *** this paper, we propose a novel framework CastFlag, which analyzes the broadcasters' operations and interactions, predicts the key events (i.e., highlights), and optimizes the transcoding stage in the corresponding live streams, even before the encoding stage. Taking the most popular eSports gamecast as an example, we illustrate the effectiveness of this framework in the game highlight prediction and transcoding workload allocation. The trace-driven evaluation shows the superiority of CastFlag as it: (1) improves the prediction accuracy over other learning-based approaches by up to 30%; (2) achieves an average of 10% saving of the transcoding latency at less cost.

Web servers in the Internet are vulnerable to Web attacks. A general way to launch Web attacks is to carry attack payloads in HTTP request parameters, e.g. SQL Injection and XSS attacks. To detect Web attacks, a commonly used method is to detect anomalies in the request parameters by making regular-expression-based matching rules for the parameters based on known security threats. However, such methods cannot detect unknown anomalies well and they can also be easily bypassed by using techniques like transcoding. Moreover, existing anomaly detection methods are usually based on supervised learning methods that require a large number of high-quality labelled samples as training sets, which are difficult to obtain in real situations. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised HTTP Request Parameter Anomaly Detection method called RPAD. RPAD uses five features of HTTP request parameters to perform anomaly detection including type, length, number of tokens, encoding type and character feature. After extracting the five features, RPAD uses the DBSCAN algorithm to cluster the parameters of each target access request and outputs the outliers found in the clustering process as anomalies. We evaluate the performance of RPAD on several datasets from multiple real websites of a Cyber Security Company. The results indicate that RPAD is highly efficient in detecting deviating abnormal parameter values with an accuracy of 99%.

Caching has become more and more important in mobile video delivery with the development of communication technology, which can reduce redundant data transmissions and decrease costs. In this paper, we consider a multiple bitrate caching system consisting of a network service provider (NSP) in charge of edge cloud with caching and processing capacity, a set of video providers (VPs), and multiple mobile users. The NSP leases the storage space of the edge cloud to VPs and VPs place their videos in edge cloud to provide better services for mobile users. The competition between NSP and VPs is modeled as a Stackelberg game. We first solve the knapsack problem to find the optimal cache placement strategy for each VP based on the allocated space to maximize its profit and then adjust the allocation strategy to maximize the profit of NSP. Moreover, we develop a dynamic programming algorithm and a multiple bitrate caching algorithm to find the Stackelberg equilibrium (SE). The numerical results show the effectiveness of proposed algorithms on pricing and cache placement.

transcoding has a significant effect on streaming media services in wireless networks. The goal of this paper is to reduce network traffic due to high network bandwidth demand and streaming constraints, and enhance the performance of streaming media services. Therefore, we propose a new OVT (object version transcoding) mechanism based on fuzzy similarity. This work derives a media object relationship to calculate the individual fuzzy similarity of certain versions of a media object. We take into account transcoding constraints such as media object characteristics, cache capacity and the properties of the object versions. Based on the given constraints, the proposed mechanism reduces the startup delay and congestion, and it increases the response rate and cache hit rate. We obtained excellent results in terms of QoS (Quality of service) metrics, average service response ratio, startup latency and cache-hit ratio.

Mobile digital television is one of the new services introduced recently by telecommunications operators. Due to the possibilities of personalization and interaction provided, together with the increasing demand for this type of portable services, it will undoubtedly be a successful technology in the near future. Multimedia content is generally encoded by reducing the storage capacity necessary and bandwidth consumption in order to be transmitted. In order to adapt to the different characteristics of the networks and the varying capabilities of the devices, scalable video coding schemes have been proposed that provide temporal, spatial, and quality scalability, or a combination of these. Most of the existing video content is compressed using H.264/AVC, which is a single-layer codec, so these contents cannot benefit from the scalability tools due to the lack of intrinsic scalability provided in the bitstream at encoding time. This paper proposes a technique to convert from the single-layer H.264/AVC bitstream to a scalable bitstream with temporal scalability. Applying this approach, a reduction of 60% in coding complexity is achieved while maintaining the coding efficiency.

Nabokov's 'Diabolical Task': Translation as Capture and Becoming-Butterfly

The lepidopteral imaginary that animates Nabokov's relationship to translation can be understood in light of Deleuze and Guattari's notions of 'apparatus of capture' and 'rhizomatic becomings'. On the one hand, Nabokov's scientific fascination with butterflies frames his radically literal approach to translation. The scientific dissection of texts and butterflies 'captures' an original and singular content as it flutters, reducing it to the homogenised content of a target source. On the other hand, in Speak, Memory's engagement with 'multiple metamorphoses, familiar to butterflies', Nabokov as both literary artist and autobiographical personage becomes-butterfly with translation itself, entering into affective intensities with butterflies that include lepidopteral relations of movement and rest, speed and slowness.

Two-digit number writing and arithmetic in Year 1 children: Does number word inversion matter?

Early mathematical development relies upon the ability to translate between spoken number words and Arabic digits. Few studies have investigated whether differences in number word structure influence transcoding and its relationship with mathematics. We tested number writing and arithmetic in 177 German-speaking and 309 English-speaking Year 1 children. In English number words the order of tens and units (e.g., twenty-five) follows the written order of the Arabic digits (e.g., 25), whereas German number words are inverted (e.g., 'funfundzwanzig', five-and-twenty). transcoding at the item level was strongly influenced by number word inversion. German-speaking children made more errors transcoding two-digit numbers. However, Englishspeaking children made more errors writing teens, which are exceptional in English because of their inverted structure. Nevertheless, number writing was a significant predictor of arithmetic in both languages highlighting a significant relationship between transcoding ability and arithmetic for languages with and without number word inversion.
