Where scholarship exists on the subject of black male hypersexuality in Blaxploitation film, consensus suggests these films perpetuate racist imaginings of black sexuality. This project reevaluates the significance of Blaxploitation’s sexual imagery and argues against the traditional understanding of it. I assert that Blaxploitation’s images of hypersexuality should be understood as revolutionary for the way that they re-appropriate racist images and repurpose them to serve antiracist ends. Specifically, I argue the movement’s most prolific films, Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song (1971) and Shaft (1971), supply the two main strategies employed through Blaxploitation in defining the movement’s revolutionary sexuality: one links Black men’s sexuality to revolutionary politics and calls for disruptive acts of violence against the state while, in the other, sex becomes revolutionary as it acts as a means for changing the way that Black men are perceived and perceive themselves in media. Furthermore, in understanding these two films’ deployments of revolutionary ideology through sex I engage close readings of their interracial sex scenes to explore the ways that the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality inform these subversive images. My work builds off the research of Ana Kocić who argues that the Blaxploitation movement re-appropriates racist imaginings of blackness and transforms them into empowering depictions. My claims as to what makes the sexual imagery of the films subversive are further supported by the revolutionary philosophies of the Black Power and Black Arts movements. In order to uncover Blaxploitation’s revolutionary sexuality, I also engage Stuart Hall’s concept of transcoding, Linda Williams’s scholarship on interracial lust, and Eric Lott’s work on blackface minstrelsy to explore how Blaxploitation artists create counter-hegemonic semiotics for mainstream audiences. By doing this, my project corrects traditional understanding of black sexuality

To implement caching devices in content delivery systems, flash memory is preferable to hard disk drives from the performance perspective. Nevertheless, the higher bit cost of flash memory is one major obstacle for the wide real-life deployment of flash-based video caching. This paper presents a set of design solutions to address this cost issue. First, we present a flash memory error tolerance design strategy customized for video data storage, which can enable the use of lower-cost less-reliable flash memory chips for video storage. The cost challenge can also be addressed by reducing the video storage footprint through on-the-fly transcoding. However, direct transcoding suffers from a high implementation cost. We propose two design techniques that can largely reduce the transcoding complexity at minimal storage overhead in flash memory. All the developed design solutions share the common feature of cohesively exploring the characteristics of video coding and flash memory device physics. Their effectiveness has been well demonstrated through experiments with 20-nm MLC NAND flash memory chips and extensive simulations with representative video sequences.

transcoding techniques require a high complexity and reduce the video quality with every transcoding step. When transcoding an input bitstream to scalable video coding (SVC), only one adaptation step is required and a scaled bitstream is extractable afterwards. To reduce the H.264/AVC-to-SVC transcoding complexity, we propose a transcoding architecture which combines optimized closed- and open-loop transcoding techniques. This transcoder scales the complexity depending on the available resources. Relative to a cascaded decoder-encoder the complexity can be reduced by 99.28%, while a high rate distortion efficiency is maintained and a high degree of scalability guaranteed.

transcoding is the direct digital-to-digital data conversion of one encoding to another. This paper proposes a system of secure image transcoder which mainly focuses on multimedia applications such as web browsing through mobile phones, in order to improve their delivery to client devices with wide range of communication, storage and display capabilities. In this work, we propose a secure image transcoding technique based on a chaotic key. To improve the security of the above mentioned system, we have incorporated a variable block size selection prior to this stage. We analyzed the security of the proposed system and it is proved that the proposed system is highly secure against several forms of attack. The performance of the system is evaluated for different images and it is verified that the system is having less resource complexity with good performance.

The process of transcoding videos apart from being computationally intensive, can also be a rather complex procedure. The complexity refers to the choice of appropriate parameters for the transcoding engine, with the aim of decreasing video sizes, transcoding times and network bandwidth without degrading video quality beyond some threshold that event detectors lose their accuracy. This paper explains the need for transcoding, and then studies different video quality metrics. Commonly used algorithms for motion and person detection are briefly described, with emphasis in investigating the optimum transcoding configuration parameters. The analysis of the experimental results reveals that the existing video quality metrics are not suitable for automated systems and that the detection of persons is affected by the reduction of bit rate and resolution, while motion detection is more sensitive to frame rate.

Cloud computing is emerging as a very promising technology for computing and storage services. However, the multi-resources load balancing over heterogeneous cluster or cloud is a NP-hard problem. To obtain an optimized solution, in this paper, we propose a heuristic algorithm named Minimum Longest Queue Finish Time (MLFT). In the proposed scheme, we first divide the high computation task into multiple sub-tasks, and re-organize all the tasks into multiple task queues to shorten the entire finish time of all the tasks submitted to the cluster and launched in parallel according to load balancing. In the task division process, an adaptive segmentation algorithm is proposed according to the complexity and maximum segmentation granularity of the input task. Based on the proposed algorithm, an efficient parallel video transcoding framework with cloud computing is presented. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing algorithms significantly on the entire finish time of the tasks and approaches to the optimal solution closely.

Ultra-high definition video, sometimes termed 4k or 8k video, is likely to become the format for future video services for both home and cinema media. However, streaming real-time ultra-high definition content consumes a large amount of bandwidth in a network, which can create delays as well as lost packets for other network traffic, in particular on constrained links. Consequently, it is desirable to reduce the traffic along constrained links while providing the same quality of service to clients. By using a combination of application layer multicasting and transcoding it is possible to reduce the bandwidth usage in the network and provide a more efficient content delivery service. However, as transcoding is unlikely to be available at every location, it is required to solve the optimization problem of transcoder placement while taking into account computational and network resource constraints. This paper presents a heuristic solution to this problem. It is shown that this solution is better than a generic problem solver, such as a genetic algorithm, in terms of computational requirements, but without reducing optimization quality.

In this paper, we show how the DCT blocks can be transcoded to wavelet subbands for image deblocking in the wavelet domain. The approach is based on the transcoding of DCT blocks to wavelet coefficient subbands directly in the transform domain. The transcoding uses filtering (wavelet analysis) along with re-sampling (down) operation in the block DCT space. To perform transcoding, linear filtering is used in the block DCT domain. In this technique, filtering is performed on the three adjacent blocks. The complexity is reduced by performing sampling rate change and filtering operations in a single combined step. The proposed approach achieves the quality as same as the spatial domain technique at a reduced computational cost.

A cognitive model for multidigit number reading: Inferences from individuals with selective impairments

We propose a detailed cognitive model of multi-digit number reading. The model postulates separate processes for visual analysis of the digit string and for oral production of the verbal number. Within visual analysis, separate sub-processes encode the digit identities and the digit order, and additional sub-processes encode the number's decimal structure: its length, the positions of 0, and the way it is parsed into triplets (e.g., 314987 -> 314,987). Verbal production consists of a process that generates the verbal structure of the number, and another process that retrieves the phonological forms of each number word. The verbal number structure is first encoded in a tree-like structure, similarly to syntactic trees of sentences, and then linearized to a sequence of number-word specifiers. This model is based on an investigation of the number processing abilities of seven individuals with different selective deficits in number reading. We report participants with impairment in specific sub-processes of the visual analysis of digit strings - in encoding Learning disabilities the digit order, in encoding the number length, or in parsing the digit string to triplets. Other participants were impaired in verbal production, making errors in the number structure (shifts of digits to another decimal position, e.g., 3,040 -> 30,004). Their selective deficits yielded several dissociations: first, we found a double dissociation between visual analysis deficits and verbal production deficits. Second, several dissociations were found within visual analysis: a double dissociation between errors in digit order and errors in the number length;a dissociation between order/length errors and errors in parsing the digit string into triplets;and a dissociation between the processing of different digits - impaired order encoding of the digits 2-9, without errors in the 0 position. Third, within verbal production, a dissociation was found between digit shifts and substitutions of number

mRNA Dependent Virtual-Real Substitutions of Nucleotides in Codons: The Dynamics of Their Meanings in the Genome Language

This is an attempt to explain mRNA-dependent non-stationary semantic values of codons (triplets) and nucleotides (letters) in codon composition during protein biosynthesis. This explanation is realized by comparing the different protein codes of various biosystem taxa, and, comparing mitochondrial code with the standard code. An initial mRNA transcriptional virtuality (Virtual-Reality) is transformed into material reality at the level of translation of virtual triplets into real (material) amino acids or into a real stop command of protein biosynthesis. The transformation of virtuality into reality occurs de facto when the linguistic sign1 functions of the codon syhoms are realized in the 3’ nucleotide (wobbling nucleotide according to F. Crick) in the process of protein biosynthesis. This corresponds to the theoretical works of the authors of this article. Despite the illusory appearance of semantic arbitrariness during the operation of ribosomes in the mode of codon semantic non-stationarity, this phenomenon probably provides biosystems with an unusually high level of adaptability to changes in the external environment as well as to internal (mental) dynamics of neuron’s genome in the cerebral cortex. The genome’s non-stationarity properties at the nucleotide, codon, gene and mental levels have fractal structure and corresponding dimensions. The highest form of such fractality (with maximum dimension) is probably realized in the genomic continuum of neurons in the human cerebral cortex through this semantic Virtual-to-Real (VR) codon transcoding with the biosynthesis of short-living semantic proteins, as the equivalents of material thinking-consciousness. In fact, this is the language of the brain’s genome, that is, our own language. In this case, the same thing happens in natural, primarily mental (non-verbal) languages. Their materialization is recorded in vocables (sounding words) and in writing. Such writing is the amino acid sequence in the semantic proteins
