We present a model and system for deciding on computing versus storage trade-offs in the Cloud using von Neumann-Morgenstern lotteries. We use the decision model in a video-on-demand system providing cost-efficient transcoding and storage of videos. Video transcoding is an expensive computational process that converts a video from one format to another. Video data are large enough to cause concern over rising storage costs. In the general case, our work is of interest when dealing with expensive computations that generate large results that can be cached for future use. Solving the decision problem entails solving two sub-problems: how long to store cached objects and how many requests we can expect for a particular object in that duration. We compare the proposed approach to always storing and to our previous approach over one year using discrete-event simulations. We observe a 72% cost reduction compared to always storing and a 13% reduction compared to our previous approach. This reduction in cost stems from the proposed approach storing fewer unpopular objects when it does not regard it as cost-efficient to do so.

This paper presents a programming model approach that explicitly addresses the programmability of scientific code by annotating imperative code with its algorithmic structural behavior. This information is used to create hierarchical structures, as opposed to the flat structure that most programming models work with, which allows sound code transformation at any level of the code, adjusting the granularity of parallelization simultaneously with other parameters to better exploit the available hardware resources.

While control speculation is highly effective for generating good schedules in out-of-order processors, it is less effective for in-order processors because compilers have trouble scheduling in the presence of unbiased branches, even. when those branches are highly predictable. In this paper we demonstrate a novel architectural branch decomposition that separates the prediction and deconvergence point of a branch. from its resolution, which enables the compiler to profitably schedule across predictable, but unbiased branches. We show that the hardware support for this branch architecture is a trivial extension of existing systems and describe a simple code transformation for exploiting this architectural support. As architectural changes are required, this technique is most compelling for a dynamic binary translation-based system like Project Denver We evaluate the performance improvements enabled by this transformation for several in-order configurations across the SPEC 2006 benchmark suites. We show that our technique produces a Geornean speedup of 11% for SPEC 2006 Integer with speedups as large as 35%. As floating point benchmarks contain fewer unbiased, but predictable branches, our Geomean speedup on SPEC 2006 FP is 7%, with a maximum speedup of 26%.

This paper presents the implementation details of multi-format streaming server. Supported protocols are HLS (HTTP live streaming) protocol and MPEG-DASH (Moving Pictures Experts Group - Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) protocol, which allow the server to adapt to different network conditions and client requirements in order to achieve the best possible QoE (Quality of Experience) with low latency and seamless transitions between streams of different quality and bitrates. Compliance of the solution to proposed standards was tested with commercial applications that support client side of these protocols, while QoE was measured through surveys by subjective evaluation of participants.

Streaming Feed has become one of the most used utility now-a-days. Starting from Home-Security to Business Surveillance, streaming feed is utilized everywhere. However, due to unstable network bandwidth, frequent buffering and delay occurrence usually creates degraded user experience. One of the ways to avoid this is to use Adaptive Bitrate Streaming. Among various protocols supporting this Adaptive Feed, HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) has become one of the most famous commercially used protocol choices. The main advantage achieved via this is the ability to provide support for different device categories (in terms of maximum resolution or maximum bitrate the device can support) as well as supporting of various video qualities depending upon network condition. But the downside of using HLS is the introduction of transcoding delay in Live Feed. In this paper, we are proposing Dynamic transcoding algorithm for HLS by optimizing the delay and providing a near live experience to a vast number of differently capable devices at the same time without violating the principles of the specification. Based on our experimental results, we will show that, using the proposed methodology, we can achieve better user experience by providing best suitable video with current network condition apart from supporting varied kind of devices at the same time.

In this paper, we propose a machine learning based transcoding scheme for arbitrarily downsizing a pre-encoded High Efficiency Video Coding video. The spatial scaling factor can be freely selected to adapt the output bit rate to the bandwidth of the network. Furthermore, machine learning techniques can exploit the correlation between input and output coding information to predict the split-flag of coding units in a P-frame. We analyzed the performance of both offline and online training in the learning phase of transcoding. The experimental results show that the proposed techniques significantly reduce the transcoding complexity and achieve trade-offs between coding performance and complexity. In addition, we demonstrate that online training performs better than offline training.

In this paper an efficient transcoder from H.264/AVC to a wavelet-based scalable video (W-SVC) codec is proposed. It exploits the advantage of using large sizes of prediction blocks in the W-SVC codec, and it is flexible in the sense that it is able to cope with any prediction structure in H.264/AVC stream, such as IPP or IBBP configuration with multiple reference frames. The reference frame mismatch between the source and target codecs is solved by a novel framework for motion vector approximation and refinement. The Transco-der performance benefits from the use of block sizes larger than 16×16, especially for higher resolution content. Experimental results show a very good performance in terms of decoded video quality and system complexity.

In this paper, for the generation of drift-error-resilient coded bitstreams at the encoder side, an investigation on the drift-error propagation in H.264 by applying different motion estimation precisions is carried out. The results show that the drift-error propagation in half-pixel motion estimation precision increases due to the usage of six-tap filter. Mathematical model for estimating drift-error propagation is presented as well.
