The cloud computing paradigm has been advocated in recent video conferencing system design, which exploits the rich on-demand resources spanning multiple geographic regions of a distributed cloud, for better conferencing experience. A typical architectural design in cloud environment is to create video conferencing agents, i.e., Virtual machines, in each cloud site, assign users to the agents, and enable inter-user communication through the agents. Given the diversity of devices and network connectivities of the users, the agents may also transcode the conferencing streams to the best formats and bitrates. In this architecture, two key issues exist on how to effectively assign users to agents and how to identify the best agent to perform a Transco ding task, which are nontrivial due to the following: (1) the existing proximity-based assignment may not be optimal in terms of inter-user delay, which fails to consider the whereabouts of the other users in a conferencing session, (2) the agents may have heterogeneous bandwidth and processing availability, such that the best Transco ding agents should be carefully identified, for cost minimization while best serving all the users requiring the transcoded streams. To address these challenges, we formulate the user-to-agent assignment and Transco ding-agent selection problems, which targets at minimizing the operational cost of the conferencing provider while keeping the conferencing delay low. The optimization problem is combinatorial in nature and difficult to solve. Using Markov approximation framework, we design a decentralized algorithm that provably converges to a bounded neighborhood of the optimal solution. An agent ranking scheme is also proposed to properly initialize our algorithm so as to improve its convergence. The results from a prototype system implementation show that our design in a set of Internet-scale scenarios reduces the operational cost by 77% as compared to a commonly-adopted alternative, while sim

We present a model and system for deciding on computing versus storage trade-offs in the Cloud using von Neumann-Morgenstern lotteries. We use the decision model in a video-on-demand system providing cost-efficient transcoding and storage of videos. Video transcoding is an expensive computational process that converts a video from one format to another. Video data are large enough to cause concern over rising storage costs. In the general case, our work is of interest when dealing with expensive computations that generate large results that can be cached for future use. Solving the decision problem entails solving two sub-problems: how long to store cached objects and how many requests we can expect for a particular object in that duration. We compare the proposed approach to always storing and to our previous approach over one year using discrete-event simulations. We observe a 72% cost reduction compared to always storing and a 13% reduction compared to our previous approach. This reduction in cost stems from the proposed approach storing fewer unpopular objects when it does not regard it as cost-efficient to do so.

The use of cloud computing platforms for video production workflows has become a reality for many media organizations. Cloud computing platforms offer several unique capabilities for application deployment that enable new and different interactions for viewers and partners. Technical teams are receiving the mandate to evaluate, test and deploy on cloud computing platforms. — Successful implementations of cloud video applications are the result of applying cloud technology to remove business constraints. The goals were not replication of existing infrastructure on the cloud platform but instead to provide on-demand capacity, world-wide accessibility and dynamic scaling of application and storage resources. — This paper describes how three media companies have structured their workflows using cloud technology to deliver successful application deployments, with far less effort, on or under budget. In this paper, we propose a fast mode decision framework and a fast motion estimation algorithm for H.264 to High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) transcoding. The fast mode decision framework employs a post-order (bottom-up) traversal of the coding tree unit (CTU) quadtree. Based on this traversal and H.264 information, several strategies are proposed to reduce HEVC modes to be tested and a rate-distortion (RD) cost prediction model is used to terminate the processing of a tested mode early. The proposed fast motion estimation algorithm selects the best candidate from a list of H.264 motion vectors (MVs) and previously encoded HEVC MVs. Compared to a full re-encoding, experimental results show that the proposed solution achieves speed-ups of up to 12.75x, for an average BD-Rate of 3.28%.

Nowdays, many Video-on-Demand (VoD) providers offer multiple-quality video streaming services to heterogeneous clients, called as multi-version VoD. Some researches focus on video transcoding in real-time or video layered encoding/decoding, but they are not widely used in VoD industry. Storing multiple versions of the same video is an easy solution, but it consumes lots of storage space. Although there are also a few works about trading-off between transcoding and storage, they did not utilize the transcoding relationships among different versions and took the video popularity into account, which bring that they may have little cost-efficiency for multi-version VoD systems. To minimize the cost, in this paper, we propose a version-aware transcoding computation and storage trade-off strategy for multi-version VoD systems in the cloud. Firstly, it utilizes the transcoding weight graph to describe the transcoding relationships among different versions of a video. According to the graph, the transcoding computation cost from one version to another version can be calculated. Secondly, it takes the video popularity of different versions, the prices of storage and computation resources in the cloud into account to decide which versions of which videos should be stored or transcoded. We then formulate it as an optimization problem and present a heuristic approximate optimal solution. Finally, we conduct extensive simulations to evaluate our strategy and solution, and the results show that they can significantly lower the cost of multi-version VoD systems.

HEVC and VP9 are the current state-of-the-art in video compression, thus, it is expected that in the near future these new codecs will replace their predecessors. However, the process of converting video contents compressed with one standard to those using another standard is highly computationally expensive, since a priori the video contents must be decompressed and compressed with the target video encoder. Nevertheless, it is known that some information can be extracted from the decoding process in order to accelerate the encoding process. In this paper, a technique for transcoding from HEVC to VP9 is presented. By using some information extracted from the HEVC decoding process some coding computations will be discarded from being checked in the VP9 encoder. By applying the proposed approaches, a reduction of about 38% of the coding complexity is achieved with acceptable Rate Distortion penalties.

Wearable cameras are very useful for crowdsensing since they enhance the participation of crowds with less user interventions on manipulating cameras. However, stored videos are large and may fill up the storage space very soon, leading to dropped videos. In this paper, we propose Adaptive transcoding Algorithm (ATA) to optimally transcode the stored videos on wearable cameras under resource constraints. In particular, we formulate an adaptive transcoding problem with empirical video transcoding and transmission models to maximize the overall perceived quality of video. The objective of our problem is to select a video representation (frame rate, resolution, and quantization parameter) that minimizes the quality degradation when transcoding the stored videos. We conduct extensive simulations using real datasets to compare the performance of our proposed ATA against other algorithms. The simulation results show that our ATA algorithm: (i) outperforms other baseline algorithms averagely 12 dB in terms of PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio), (ii) spends only 13% energy consumption on transcoding with efficient transcoding decisions, and (iii) achieves nearly 4 times of improvement on delay than the baseline.

The benefits of transcoding make it possible an incompatible or obsolete contents to be run at any device in a modern format. Nowadays, it is a common way to transcode contents to another format, different bitrates or qualities. As there are some limitations on the source computer which is like thin client with very low H/W specification, it is preferably recommended to be processed on the cloud environment recently. In this paper, we introduce a new way which uses a virtualization technology to provide transcoder resources as a cloud-service with efficient manner. This has the benefit that one can use scalable cloud infrastructure to transcode large amounts of data in a short time. Whereas, it has also drawback that is the time spent downloading source contents into the cloud. So, we design and implement a cloud transcoder with our own efficient scheme which can effectively improve the transcoding process time.

Omni Media has become an important trend with the development of information services in the context of network convergence and screen integration. In such an environment, Internet interaction is no longer limited to the computer, users can also access Internet resources through wearable and other smart computing devices. This paper proposes a multimedia repository system, which is composed of client file upload module, task allocation core middle tier module of server side, file fragments merge module and media transcoding module. In section I, we comprehensively analyzed the current mainstream large file upload method based on the browser and discuss the features of each method. Then we proposed a combination of Ajax with XMLHttpRequest Level 2, File API and other technologies to achieve large media file segments upload in section II. In section III, we described the core task allocation middle tier module of server architecture which allows the system to receive media resources from various types of terminals and upload to the cloud server repository without size limit. Furthermore, we gave an example of completing the file upload and file fragments merge by using the core task allocation middle tier.

We show novel applications as use cases and experiments on programmable infrastructures. We have designed and implemented a programmable infrastructure called VNode on a Japanese testbed network. The VNode infrastructure allows the network developer or researcher to create a slice. A slice is a set of connected virtualized computational resources and link resources. The user can easily configure and modify own network topology and deploy service functions as software like SDN and NFV. We realize multicast streaming and adaptive bit rate streaming by deploying video processing functions in a slice. Moreover, we realize automatic function deployment that responds to traffic intensity. We conduct some experiments to confirm the feasibility and usability of our use cases and the VNode infrastructure. We establish data streaming via a slice with enhanced functionalities and measure the resource utilization rate. Furthermore, we conduct some experiments on a federated slice established between VNode and GENI, which is a programmable infrastructure in the U.S. The results show that we can enhance service functionalities and use resources more efficiently by deploying software functions on programmable infrastructures.
