Scalable Video Coding (SVC) is backwards compatible to H.264/AVC in the sense that the base layer sub-bitstream is decodable by an H.264/AVC decoder. However, there are applications wherein it is desirable for an H.264/AVC decoder to obtain a higher resolution video representation than the base layer within SVC. In order to fulfill the needs of such application scenarios, transcoding of SVC enhancement layers to H.264/AVC is required. This paper presents a transcoding scheme that is capable of transcoding a spatial scalable SVC bitstreams to H.264/AVC bitstreams that provide high resolution than the H.264/AVC compliant base layer. To reduce the complexity at the transcoder, a fast mode decision (MD) process is proposed, wherein the original SVC macroblock coding modes and motion information are reused as much as possible. Experimental results show that proposed scheme performs elegantly compared with full-decoding-and-encoding transcoding with low computational complexity.

Internet services are becoming more ubiquitous and 3D graphics is increasingly gaining a strong foothold in the Web technology domain. Recently, with WebGL, real-time 3D graphics in the Browser became a reality and most major Browsers support WebGL natively today. This makes it possible to create applications like 3D catalogs of artifacts, or to interactively explore Cultural Heritage objects in a Virtual Museum on mobile devices. Frameworks like the open-source system X3DOM provide declarative access to low-level GPU routines along with seamless integration of 3D graphics into HTML5 applications through standardized Web technologies. Most 3D models also need to be optimized to address concerns like limited network bandwidth or reduced GPU power on mobile devices. Therefore, recently an online platform for the development of Virtual Museums with particular attention to presentation and visualization of Cultural Heritage assets in online virtual museums was proposed [1]. This common implementation Framework (CIF) allows the user to upload large 3D models, which are subsequently converted and optimized for web display and embedded in an HTML5 application that can range from simple interactive display of the model to an entire virtual environment like a virtual walk-through. Generating these various types of applications is done via a templating mechanism, which will be further elaborated within this paper. Moreover, to efficiently convert many large models into an optimized form, a substantial amount of computing power is required, which a single system cannot yet provide in a timely fashion. Therefore, we also describe how the CIF can be used to utilize a dynamically allocated cloud-based or physical cluster of commodity hardware to distribute the workload of model optimization for the Web.

Video adaption is one of the main solutions to offer access to the large array of existing multimedia contents and the variety of terminals and networks. This adaptation can be achieved efficiently using transcoding techniques. The implementation of the various adaptation possibilities and techniques in embedded systems such as home gateway requires flexible and efficient architectures. This paper presents a hardware reconfigurable architecture for the real time adaptation of video contents for different terminals and available bandwidth. This architecture is designed to adapt a compressed stream in advanced video coding standard (H264/AVC) and/or MPEG-2. A system level model of reconfigurable transcoder is developed for IP integration and architectural exploration by taking into account dynamic and partial reconfiguration. The developed simulation model of dynamic partial reconfiguration allowed the early estimation of performances and the design of the suitable solution for the considered transcoding scenarios.

In the context of mobile Web conferencing, slide documents are generally transcoded into JPEG format and wrapped into a Web page prior to delivery. Given the diversity of these devices and their networks, dynamically identifying the optimal transcoding parameters is very challenging, as the number of transcoding parameters combinations could be very high. Current solutions use the resolution of the target mobile device and a fixed quality factor as transcoding parameters. However, this technique allows no control over the resulting file size, which, if too large, might increase the delivery time and negatively affect users' experience. Another solution (content selection) which leads to better quality consists in creating several versions and, at delivery time, selecting the best one. However, such a solution is computationally expensive. In this paper, we propose a prediction-based framework which computes near-optimal transcoding parameters dynamically with far less computations. We propose five methods based on this framework. The first predicts near-optimal transcoding parameters, while the others improve their accuracy. From the set of documents tested, two of the proposed methods reach optimality 14% and 30% of the time, respectively. Moreover, the average deviation from optimality for the proposed methods varies from 6% to 3%, with a complexity varying from 1 to 5 transcoding operations.

Recent research work and industrial experience show that heterogeneous data centers can be more cost-effective for some applications, especially those with intensive I/O operations. However, for a given application, it remains difficult to decide whether the application should be deployed on homogeneous nodes or heterogeneous nodes. In this paper, we perform a case study on finding optimized configurations for Video on Demand(VOD) systems. We examine two major modules in VOD systems, the streaming module and the transcoding module. In this study, we measure performance and power on different configurations by varying these factors: processor type, disk type, number of disks, operating systems and module mapping modes. We find that hosting VOD systems on heterogeneous nodes reduces no more than 35% power or cost per unit work done, compared with the server-only configuration. In Windows, multiplexing the two modules on servers achieves comparable power and cost reduction, but it is even worse than the non-multiplexing solution in Linux. The anti-intuitive and non-consistent results reflect the intrinsic complexity of finding an optimized configuration for a VOD system. Empirical data are necessary to support quantitative instead of qualitative analysis.

The speed and quality of traditional baseband approaches to image enhancement is now being eclipsed by commodity enterprise computing technology, with emerging file-based solutions focused on frame-rate conversions, de-noising, resolution-scaling, and other techniques for improving image quality. This paper will examine how continually increasing CPU power combined with increasingly sophisticated GPU-based algorithms enables ever-greater performance and output quality, with the significant operational and cost benefits found only in highly automated and massively parallelized grid-based processing workflows.

This paper presents a novel approach to formally prove the equivalence of low-level hardware-dependent programs. Inspired by hardware verification techniques, a software miter is created that compares the behaviors of two programs, taking into account the interfaces between the software and the hardware environments. Two programs are considered equivalent if they produce the same outputs for the same input assignments and also exhibit the same sequences of interactions with the relevant hardware peripherals. This motivates a hardware-dependent computational model combining a path-oriented program view, as is common in hardware-independent software verification, with a structural hardware representation of the program's computation. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed technique for industrial low-level software in important equivalence checking scenarios such as code porting and automated/manual code transformations.

The increasing complexity of successfully delivering video across a multitude of fragmented device platforms presents a significant challenge. Preparing a high volume of video content for multi-screen consumption requires massive computing resources equipped for high-speed processing. It also requires the tools and know-how to transcode and often programmatically edit or re-package video assets for error-fee, optimized delivery. Cloud computing allows content owners to deploy scalable and flexible video workflows that maximize consumption across all targeted platforms. We compare different workflow cost structures and technical options for a variety of internet delivery targets.

Digital video is prominent big data spread all over the Internet. It is large not only in size but also in required processing power to extract useful information. Fast processing of excessive video reels is essential on criminal investigations, such as terrorism. This demo presents an extensible video processing framework in Apache Hadoop to parallelize video processing tasks in a cloud environment. Except for video transcending systems, there have been few systems that can perform various video processing in cloud computing environments. The framework employs FFmpeg for a video coder, and OpenCV for a image processing engine. To optimize the performance, it exploits MapReduce implementation details to minimize video image copy. Moreover, FFmpeg source code was modified and extended, to access and exchange essential data and information with Hadoop, effectively. A face tracking system was implemented on top of the framework for the demo, which traces the continuous face movements in a sequence of video frames. Since the system provides a web-based interface, people can try the system on site. In an 8-core environment with two quad-core systems, the system shows 75% of scalability.
