We present a two-level rate control approach for VC-1 to H.264 transcoding. First, a low complexity algorithm in which the key is to find the relationship between quantization parameters (QPs) in VC-1 to QPs in H.264. Second, a medium complexity algorithm in which the key is to use mean absolute differences and sum of absolute transform differences calculated in VC-1 to estimate the complexity of macroblocks in H.264 for a pixel/transform domain transcoder. The low complexity rate control tool has a limitation of only able to rate-control transcode for QP ranges from 10 to 29. To transcode the entire QP range we propose a combination of low and median complexities tools. Results show that the proposed rate control transcoding is less complex than that of a full-cascaded transcoder with regular rate control turned on, while maintaining target bit-rate and PSNR.

P2P networks have traditionally been used as an enabler for distributed storage and file sharing. With consumer electronics (CE) devices becoming more complex, we can expect a P2P network of CE devices to enable sharing of other resources such as CPU cycles and memory for certain targeted applications. In this paper we present a technique which can enable a P2P network of set top boxes to achieve the computationally intensive task of video transcoding and streaming to other CE devices. We show how memory and CPU cycles can be shared in an optimal way using a 0-1 knapsack formulation.

An adapt flexible macroblock ordering strategy based on unequal protection scheme is presented for video transcoding. The key point of our scheme is selecting the important macroblocks which belong to a separate slice group under prior protection in transmission. The judgement of the importance of the macroblocks is based on the differences of the DCT coefficients of neighbouring subblocks in a macroblock which represent the texture change and the complexity of the macroblock content. The number of the important macroblocks can be controlled effectively in predetermined range. The other macroblocks judged as unimportant are classified into two slices according to the edge match rule contributing to the efficiency of the error concealment in decoder. The adapt FMO scheme enhance error resilient capability and improve error concealment capability in decoder. Experiments shows that the proposed flexible macroblock ordering strategy improve the subjective quality and objective quality 2-3 dB than traditional FMO type such as interlaced type and dispersed type suggested by h.264 if one unimportant slice is corrupted.

Video communication over the Internet is becoming increasingly popular today. Transmission of videos over networks has always been a problem due to reasons like high bandwidth requirement, lossy channels (especially wireless links, low bit rate two way communication links etc), huge file sizes and the large variety of end terminals with different constraints. In this paper, we limit ourselves to solving the problem of bandwidth and end terminal frame rate requirements in the context of video content distribution over the internet. We propose an efficient temporal transcoding architecture in which motion change is considered. For motion vector composition, both bilinear interpolation vector selection (BIVS) and forward dominant vector selection (FDVS) are used. Our architecture operates entirely in the DCT domain, unlike some architectures, which operate partially or fully in the pixel domain, thus avoiding computationally expensive operations of inverse DCT and DCT. The re-encoding errors are also minimized. The macro block coding types are re-judged to reduce drift errors. We have implemented the algorithms and carried out experiments for Mpeg 1 video sequences and the results are found to be promising.

To solve the problem that the common podcast system based on traditional transcoding system costs much and is very difficult to support concurrent users, in the paper, a novel transcoding system based on distributed farming computing architecture was designed. It can save a great deal cost of hardware resource and improve its transcoding efficiency at the statement of large concurrent accesses. By the comparison of performance between the traditional transcoding system and the proposed in the paper with the simulation, it has been proved that the podcast system adopting the new transcoding method has so much good feature as higher ratio of cost and performance, shorter user waiting time and faster video accumulation speed.

As multiview video is gaining more and more attentions, Multiview Video Coding (MVC) standard has been under development by the Joint Video Team as an extension to H.264/AVC. There will be increasingly more multiview video sources for both high end and low end consumers. Since a variety of end user devices shall not have multiview video decoders installed, multiview video transcoder is therefore needed in order for these users to enjoy the videos encoded by MVC standard. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for transcoding any viewpoint in bitstreams encoded by MVC to bitstreams that can be decoded by H.264/AVC decoders, regardless of the MVC prediction structure. The key component of this algorithm is the design of motion information reuse to implement simple motion refinement for inter-view coded macroblocks. Such reduced complexity implementation is especially applicable to the low power mobile devices. Experimental results show that, comparing with cascaded algorithm, the proposed scheme, with much reduced complexity, only suffers moderate performance loss.

A variety of techniques have been proposed to enhance the error robustness of the video streaming system. However, most of them improve the error resilience during compression rather than after compression. In this paper, we propose a novel transcoding based scheme called Slepian-Wolf based inter frame transcoding (SWIFT) to improve the error resilience of existing compressed video stream. In the SWIFT scheme, inter coded blocks are selectively transcoded into new kind of blocks called dasiaX-blockpsila. At the decoder, the X-block can be transcoded back to the original P-block when there is no error in the prediction, and can also be robustly decoded as I-block when there are errors in the prediction. In the experiments, the proposed SWIFT scheme does not introduce transcoding distortion as expected, and always improves the robustness of the compressed video at all packet loss rate. Compared with the H.264 based transcoder, SWIFT achieves better RD performance and error resilience performance.

This paper presents a fast variable block size inter mode decision algorithm suitable for low complexity MPEG-2 to H.264/AVC heterogeneous video transcoding in mobile environments. Macroblock inter coding mode prediction in H.264/AVC represents almost 70% of its computational complexity. An efficient transcoder would take advantage of the information stored in MPEG-2 bitstream (ex. motion vectors, DCT coefficients, etc.) to simplify macroblock mode decision in H.264/AVC. The proposed fast variable block size inter mode decision (FVBSMD) algorithm conditionally reuse MPEG-2 motion vectors along with only few DCT coefficients to eliminate unnecessarily complexity from H.264/AVC variable block size motion re-estimation process. Simulations results; using video sequences with different motion complexities, resolutions and frame rates; show about 80% computational complexity elimination with only a 0.2 dB and 2.5% degradation in PSNR and bit-rate respectively.

Cloud computing is an emerging technology developed for providing various computing and storage services over the Internet. In this paper, we proposed a privacy-preserving cloud-aware scenario for compressive multimedia applications, including multimedia compression, adaptation, editing/manipulation, enhancement, retrieval, and recognition. In the proposed framework, we investigate the applicability of our/existing compressive sensing (CS)-based multimedia compression and securely compressive multimedia "trans-sensing" techniques based on sparse coding for securely delivering compressively sensed multimedia data over a cloud-aware scenario. Moreover, we also investigate the applicability of our/existing sparse coding-based frameworks for several multimedia applications by leveraging the strong capability of a media cloud. More specifically, to consider several fundamental challenges for multimedia cloud computing, such as security and network/device heterogeneities, we investigate the applications of CS and sparse coding techniques in multimedia delivery and applications. As a result, we can build a unified cloud-aware framework for privacy-preserving multimedia applications via sparse coding.

In this paper we focus on improving the optimized content-aware authentication scheme over lossy network and incorporating this scheme into secure scalable streaming (SSS) and secure transcoding with JPEG-2000 images. SSS encodes, encrypts and packetizes image into secure scalable packets in a manner that allows downstream transcoders to perform transcoding operations by simply truncating or discarding packets without decrypting the data. However SSS does not consider the issues of packet loss and stream authentication while the stream is transmitted over today's public and lossy networks. This paper proposes an improved optimized content-aware authentication scheme and implements a system to integrate it with SSS seamlessly. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieved our design goal in that the R-D curve of the authenticated image is very close to its original one where no authentication is applied.
