As for down-sizing MPEG-2 to H.264/AVC transcoding, an efficient algorithm of estimating initial H.264/AVC motion vectors is proposed. By using the estimated initial motion vectors, only a small range of motion vector refinement is sufficient to find the final motion vector for each partition. Experimental results show that our proposed algorithm achieves average 0.08 dB improvement (maximum 0.24 dB) in the picture quality compared to the other state-of-art method. At the same time, the computational complexity of estimating the initial motion vectors is less than that of the other state-of-art technique (average 36% reduction).

The main design criterion of efficient transcoding system is to utilize the information embedded in coded bitstream to reduce the computational complexity of the transcoding. H.264 encoder spends significant time and computations to determine the best encoding mode for a Macroblock (MB) encoding mode. We propose to use MB encoding mode and residue statistics of MPEG-2 coded bitstream to decide on the best MB partition mode for H.264 encoding. Performance evaluations have shown that for similar objective and subjective quality, our proposed scheme can reduce the computational complexity to half as compared to the full decode-encode system, while transcoding at half the bitrate as compared to the MPEG-2 bitrate.

Real-time multimedia applications often require efficient bit-rate reduction. This is mainly done by requantization, usually in the DCT domain. This work introduces theoretical rate-distortion analysis that allows for straightforward selection of the quantization step needed to achieve a given bit-rate. The analysis is based on the Laplace-like distribution of DCT coefficients in the transform domain and on the structure of the quantizers commonly used in image coding. We show that the proposed transcoding design achieves efficient compression at relatively low distortion, while keeping the computational complexity very low, allowing for real-time implementation.

We show that important information can be deduced to reduce the encoder complexity even if the two coders employ different psychoacoustic model. In this paper, we present a novel technique to transcode VC-1 to H.264 high profile (HP). We use the low frequency AC coefficients to estimate the homogeneity of the block to predict the block transform size and use the magnitude of the motion vectors to help decide transcoding mode for interlaced video. We also analyze the drift error specific to transcoding VC-1 to H.264 and apply this study results to improve final video quality. Implementation of the solution shows that the complexity of the transcoder, when compared to a full-cascaded transcoder, is greatly reduced without a significant loss in peak-signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR).

This paper presents an efficient mode decision algorithm for H.263 to H.264 interframe transcoding. The proposed scheme uses a support vector machines (SVMs) approach to investigate the relationship between data extracted from H.263 decoding stage and the optimal coding mode in H.264 re-encoding process. Based on the SVM classifier, the transcoder only enables a subset of candidate modes for each macroblock in the rate-distortion-optimized mode decision in H.264. The objective is to eliminate unlikely modes in earlier stages in order to achieve computation saving. Simulation results show that the proposed method can reduce the computational complexity of interframe transcoding by up to 77% while maintaining similar rate-distortion performance.

Reducing the file size of a JPEG image to meet bandwidth or terminal constraints is a common transcoding operation. The reduction can be achieved by reducing either the quality factor (QF) or the resolution, or both. In this paper, we analyze the impact of QF and scaling parameter choices on the quality of the resulting images, as measured by a quality metric such as the structural similarity index (SSIM). We propose a quality-aware transcoding system which considers the quality of transcoded images when QF and scaling are selected jointly. Its goal is to select QF and scaling parameters that maximize the user experience under a given viewing condition, as measured by the chosen quality metric.

CAS is positively necessary to streaming service such as IPTV and VOD, charging cable TV broadcasting channels, charging satellite broadcasting channels and so on . CAS system must show clean images to authorized users and have unauthorized users unable to enjoy the images normally. To make these environments, algorism that costs less additional expenses is needed, encryption is suggested as the method. In this paper, optional encryption of H.264 image was implemented for authorization system. Suggested method is to transcode the contents of various formats, convert into YUV format, compress it using H.264 codec and encrypt the particular part following needs. By the experiment, unauthorized users without encryption key cannot see the images properly, and that when make the intensity of encryption high, playing was possible but recognition of the images was not possible is recognizable. Also, encrypting the image of 300 frames took 71.3 seconds on the average, so being very fast is recognizable, too. Suggested contents are usable to the areas of user authorization and copyright protection in streaming service such as IPTV and VOD.

In this paper we focus on rate-control VC-1 to H.264 video transcoding in which video quality is obtained while maintaining a target bit rate for the transcoded output. The relationship between rate control in VC-1 and H.264 is studied and we use the rate control information obtained from VC-1 encoding to simplify the rate control algorithm in H.264. The key idea is to find the relationship between the quantization parameters (QPs) in VC-1 to the QPs in H.264 so that the first can be used to estimate the second, short cutting the need for a complex estimation in H.264. Experimental results show that the proposed rate control for transcoding is less complex than that for a full cascaded decoder while maintaining the target bit rate and PSNR.

In this modern era of entertainment, content based multimedia services for general purpose users are extending in various dimensions. Earlier, the users were capable of using only local applications and some internet based applications with restricted privileges. The use of Universal Plug and Play Audio Visual (UPnP-AV) standards [1], HTML5 support in browsers, webrtc standards, and extended standards specially for mobiles devices will bring into play more and more Cloud Multimedia Services. However the requirements implicitly demand more interaction and participation in commonly driven activities giving a universal, unified experience. In this paper a solution for this challenge is proposed with the usage of context profile on diverse devices for adaptive services from cloud server using transcoding framework. The context profiling would be governing the transcoding framework algorithms used for adaptive or customized output from cloud. A more suitable cloud architecture from the multimedia service provider point of view is proposed.
