The emerging video coding standard, HEVC, is currently approaching the final stage of development prior to standardization. However, the current H.264/AVC standard is very successful, and it has been widely adopted for many applications. Thus, transcoding between these codecs will be highly needed once the HEVC codec is finalised. This paper studies the performance of one of the most common techniques for heterogeneous transcoding, motion vector (MV) reuse, in a H.264/AVC to HEVC transcoder. Furthermore, it proposes a new transcoder that is capable of complexity scalability, trading off rate-distortion performance for complexity reduction. The proposed transcoder is based on a new metric to compute the similarity of the H.264/AVCMVs, which is used to decide which HEVC partitions are tested on the transcoder.

New parallel computers are emerging, but developing efficient scientific code for them remains difficult. A scientist must manage not only the science-domain complexity but also the performance-optimization complexity. HERCULES is a code transformation system designed to help the scientist to separate the two concerns, which improves code maintenance, and facilitates performance optimization. The system combines three technologies, code patterns, transformation scripts and compiler plugins, to provide the scientist with an environment to quickly implement code transformations that suit his needs. Unlike existing code optimization tools, HERCULES is unique in its focus on user-level accessibility. In this paper we discuss the design, implementation and an initial evaluation of HERCULES.

One problem of Web 2.0 applications lacks intelligence to cope with the XML-based documents transcoding. This study attempts to integrate semantic Web technologies into Web 2.0 mashups by defining a semantic-based Web2.0 mashups framework, which is developed based on service-oriented architecture (SOA) to ruling out heterogeneous effects. Based on the proposed framework, semantic-based transcoding mashup server (STMS) is also developed to facilitate finding useful Web 2.0 mashups to achieve Web 2.0 documents transcoding. To demonstrate the feasibility of STMS, an application scenario of the semantic-based mashup transcoding is implemented to convert map pages into various display platforms. Additionally, the study also realizes how semantic Web and Web 2.0 mashups can complement each other.

MSS: Use File Format Conversion for Suppress Malicious Scripts in Multimedia

On the Internet, more and more Web Applications allow users to share life experience and moment by uploading multimedia files. People can easily share multimedia files. For example, people can share videos and pictures on websitcs like Youtube or Flickr. However, attackers also upload embedded script in files to attack web applications and users. To protect web applications and users from this kind of embedded malicious script in multimedia file's attack, we propose a malicious script suppression system (MSS). It uses file format conversion (i.e., transcoding) to destructively transform the structure of the malicious scripts so they become inactive. This study aims to verify that the system is suitable for many kinds of multimedia files (e.g., BMP, AVI) and able to suppress malicious scripts in multimedia file. File format conversion does not only inactivate malicious scripts, but also causes conversion loss. Therefore, the study explores the conversion loss effect on the variety of file formats in order to find the optimal conversion method experimentally and the effectiveness of suppressing malicious scripts on the variety of file formats, and finally verifies that the system prevents multimedia file attacks. By the results found, the optimal conversion method is used two-step transcoding for image file, and one-step transcoding for video file, as well as the optimal intermediate file format for transcoding is JPEG.

This paper discusses techniques for efficiently implementing a Mpeg-2 to H.264 video transcoder. The transcoding results reported in the literature are based on a reference implementation and may not reflect the true performance gains obtained in real world systems. We have developed low complexity transcoding algorithms and have implemented these solutions using highly optimized encoder and decoder implementations available from Intel. The transcoding algorithms are based on exploiting the mode decision knowledge inherent in the decoded MPEG-2 data. Machine learning techniques are used to make accurate and low-complexity H.264 MB encoding mode decisions. The results show that the proposed transcoder reduces the complexity by 50% without a significant loss in PSNR. This performance improvement in production quality transcoders, and demonstrates the practicality of machine learning based video transcoding algorithms.

The H.264 standard achieves much higher coding efficiency than the MPEG-2 standard, due to its improved inter-and intra-prediction modes at the expense of higher computational complexity. transcoding MPEG-2 video to H.264 is important to enable gradual migration to H.264. However, given the significant differences between the MPEG-2 and the H.264 coiling algorithms, transcoding is a much more complex task and new approaches to transcoding are necessary. The main problems that need to be addressed in the design of an efficient heterogeneous MPEG-2/H.264 transcoder are: the inter-frame prediction, the transform coding and the intra-frame prediction. In this paper, we focus our attention on the inter-frame prediction, the most computationally intensive task involved in the transcoding process. This paper presents a novel macroblock (MB) mode decision algorithm for P-frame prediction based on machine learning techniques to be used as part of a very low complexity MPEG-2 to H.264 video transcoder. Since coding mode decisions take up the most resources in video transcoding, a fast MB mode estimation would lead to reduced complexity. The proposed approach is based on the hypothesis that MB coding mode decisions in H.264 video have a correlation with the distribution of the motion compensated residual in MPEG-2 video. We use machine learning tools to exploit the correlation and construct decision trees to classify the incoming MPEG-2 MBs into one of the several coding modes in H.264. The proposed approach reduces the H.264 MB mode computation process into a decision tree lookup with very low complexity. Experimental results show that the proposed approach reduces the MB mode selection complexity by as much as 95% while maintaining the coding efficiency. Finally, we conduct a comparative study with some of the most prominent fast inter-prediction methods for H.264 presented in the literature. With the advent of multiple screens for viewing media, transcoding is becoming a key component of content delivery eco-systems. But transcoding implies that copies and versions of the same content can proliferate across various storage devices. It also means keeping track of content becomes a major problem both from copyright and recording/indexing perspectives. Video-based techniques for content indexing, where the aim is to extract robust signatures from video, have emerged as a major area of research. On the other hand, audio-based techniques have received less focus but audio could provide robust signatures for indexing media while it undergoes transformations. In this paper, we present an investigation of audio signatures under typical transcoding operations. Specifically, we look at Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) as a signature, which has been widely used in audio recognition systems. Initial results indicate that the MFCC is quite robust.

Tackling computationally challenging problems with high efficiency often requires the combination of algorithmic innovation, advanced architecture, and thorough exploitation of parallelism. We demonstrate this synergy through synthetic aperture radar (SAR) via backprojection, an image reconstruction method that can require hundreds of TFLOPS. Computation cost is significantly reduced by our new algorithm of approximate strength reduction; data movement cost is economized by software locality optimizations facilitated by advanced architecture support; parallelism is fully harnessed in various patterns and granularities. We deliver over 35 billion backprojections per second throughput per compute node on an Intel Xeon processor E5-2670-based cluster, equipped with Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors. This corresponds to processing a 3K×3K image within a second using a single node. Our study can be extended to other settings: backprojection is applicable elsewhere including medical imaging, approximate strength reduction is a general code transformation technique, and many-core processors are emerging as a solution to energy-efficient computing.
