The popularity of smart mobile devices has increased both the amount and consumption of media content using mobile devices. This has created a need for services which can provide short summaries of certain content (e.g. highlights of a sport event) efficiently available for end-users. However, the process of video summary creation is usually a quite complex task and an efficient implementation of video summary service would usually need some dedicated hardware. This paper proposes a novel lightweight approach for creation and delivery of video summaries utilizing recently developed DASH technology. The evaluation results indicate that considerable reduction on the delay of video summary generation and delivery can be achieved when compared against the traditional approach which uses transcoding and progressive download for creation and delivery of video summaries.

In this paper, we propose a new video encoding strategy - Video description length guided Constant Quality video coding with Bitrate Constraint (V-CQBC), for large scale video transcoding systems of video charing websites with varying unknown video contents. It provides smooth quality and saves bitrate and computation for transcoding millions of videos in both real time and batch mode. The new encoding strategy is based on the average bitrate-quality regression model and adapt to the encoded videos. Furthermore, three types of video description length (VDL), describing the video overall, spatial and temporal content complexity, are proposed to guide video coding. Experimental results show that the proposed coding strategy with saved computation could achieve better or similar RD performance than other coding strategies.

Recently, coupled schemes between Web 2.0 and service-oriented architectures (SOAs) have been researched. Content providers based on Web and Internet protocol television (IPTV) providers based on telecommunications (Telcos) have struggled against each other in order to accommodate more three-screen TV service subscribers. From the advent of Web based content management system (CMS), more abundant Web contents can be circulated. However, since service providers manage pre-encoded contents for user's device sizes and contents format directly, waste for network bandwidth and user buffer occurs. In this paper, we present user centric CMS for open IPTV service providers. The proposed system consists of Web TV enablers, a content mediator, a media server, an IPTV profile server as well as an open IPTV platform. Web TV enablers include contents aggregation, mediation, and deployment as Web services. We also implement social Web TV as the integration of the user centric CMS and social media service (SNS).

To support multimedia transmission over an enterprise wireless network, in this paper we propose a B2BSIP(Back-to-Back Session Initiation Protocol) enterprise solution which provides multimedia QoS adaptation at the application layer as well as dynamic rate control at the link layer. A B2BUA (Back-to-Back User Agent) does not have any improvisation for wireless part of an enterprise network, since the QoS parameters in B2BUA primarily focus on the wired network which is deployed with enough bandwidth. This paper presents the B2BSIP server architecture to induce the quality of service for the wireless network by developing a new rate adaptation scheme that reduces the I frame occurrence of the video while meeting the delay requirement of the video and thus saving the bandwidth. Based on feedback from the wireless link layer, the algorithm identifies the optimal application layer QoS requirements and applies to the B2BUA server that lies near the wireless base station in the enterprise which leads to quick parameter adaptation. Our work is verified to work well by the ns-2 simulator that emulates the access link of mobile WiMAX systems.

The increase of aggregate Internet bandwidth and the rapid development of 3G wireless networks demand efficient delivery of multimedia objects to all types of wireless devices. To handle requests from wireless devices at runtime, the transcoding-enabled caching proxy has been proposed to save transcoded versions to reduce the intensive computing demanded by online transcoding. Constrained by available CPU and storage, existing transcoding-enabled caching schemes always selectively cache certain transcoded versions, expecting that many future requests can be served from the cache. But such schemes treat the transcoder as a black box, leaving no room for flexible control of joint resource management between CPU and storage. In this paper, we first introduce the idea of meta-caching by looking into a transcoding procedure. Instead of caching certain selected transcoded versions in full, meta-caching identifies intermediate transcoding steps from which certain intermediate results (called metadata) can be cached so that a fully transcoded version can be easily produced from the metadata with a small amount of CPU cycles. Achieving big saving in caching space with possibly small sacrifice on CPU load, the proposed meta-caching scheme provides a unique method to balance the utilization of CPU and storage resources at the proxy. We further construct a model to analyze the meta-caching scheme. Based on the analysis, we propose AMTrac, Adaptive Meta-caching for transcoding, which adaptively applies meta-caching based on the client request patterns and available resources. Experimental results show that AMTrac can significantly improve the system throughput over existing approaches.

Due to the fact that the design space of the enhancements for reducing the energy consumption of this component is huge, this paper proposes a high-level energy estimation tool that, for. a given application and compiler, allows the exploration not only of architectural and compiler configurations, but also of code transformations that are related to the Instruction Memory Organisation. The proposed tool, with a mean error of 3.95%, achieves reductions in time and effort to explore the design space of the Instruction Memory Organisation.

As an extension of AVC, SVC provides the ability to adapt to heterogeneous environments. However, transcoding between SVC and AVC becomes necessary due to the existence of legacy AVC-based systems. This paper proposes a low-complexity SVC-to-AVC CGS transcoder in the pixel domain, which achieves approximately the same coding efficiency as the full re-encoding method. The output AVC bitstream modes are deduced by the proposed mode-mapping strategy. Different from previous works which simply use full search for SVC modes, the SVC modes are also examined and refined to generate suitable AVC modes in the proposed method. Simulation results show that proposed transcoder achieves 10 times speed-up with only 2% BDBR increase and 0.08 dB BDPSNR loss, compared with the full re-encoding method.

Video transcoding is an efficient way to reduce the bitrate or convert the format of the original video stream to meet the requirements of different applications and various channel capacity. In this paper, we propose a fast multiview video transcoder (MVT) for bitrate reduction. Different from the H.264 transcoder, the inter-view prediction information in the input video stream is utilized to reduce the complexity of transcoding. Besides, we also utilize the mode and selected reference frame information in original stream to accelerate RD optimization calculations. Experimental results show that the proposed transcoder can achieve significant computation reduction while maintaining close RD performance compared to the fully decode and re-encode transcoder (FDET).

The need to move. data among devices with different capabilities creates a need for transcoding. In this paper, an efficient transcoding algorithm from VC-1 to H.264 video with down/up sampling is discussed. transcoding with resolution conversion usually results in lower video output quality. To address this problem an algorithm for quality enhancement with the use of irregular sampling is presented to use with transcoding. The quality enhancement module can also be used independently from the transcoding step. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can successfully remove artifacts and generate higher video quality. The main contribution of this paper is the use of irregular sampling techniques for video quality enhancement.
