Today's Web remains too expensive for many Internet users, especially in developing regions. Unfortunately, the rising complexity of the Web makes affordability an even bigger concern as it stands to limit users' access to Internet services. We propose a novel framework and a fairness metric for rethinking Web architecture for affordability and inclusion. Our proposed framework systematically adapts Web complexity based on geographic variations in mobile broadband prices and income levels. We conduct a cross-country analysis of 99 countries, showing that our framework can better balance affordability and webpage quality while preserving user privacy. To adapt Web complexity, our framework solves an optimization problem to produce webpages that maximize page quality while reducing the webpage to a given target size.

Quality of service (QoS)-adaptive service configuration is crucial for seamless access to video services in cloud-assisted video surveillance systems. To maintain seamless access to video on a user's preferred device, suitable video transcoding services are needed. It is a challenging task to choose and configure these services for various devices to ensureQoS-adaptive user experiences. To configure these services for the desired user devices, a suitable configuration algorithm is needed. Therefore, this paper describes a QoS-adaptive service configuration approach to choose the optimal configuration for the preferred user devices in varied contexts so that the user can access the services ubiquitously. We implemented a cloud-assisted video surveillance prototype to show how the proposed method can handle ubiquitous access to target video for possible QoS-adaptive and video processing requirements in terms of bandwidth, delay, and frame rates. The results show that the proposed configuration method outperforms the other comparable approaches.

QoS guarantee is crucial for delivering real-time multimedia over any type of network. This paper proposes QoS-aware multimedia service selection in a heterogeneous network environment. The QoS-aware service selection is based on the nature-inspired routing algorithm, AntNet. The performance evaluation for this selection algorithm is conducted on the multimedia content transcoding system. This paper presents and evaluates a real implementation of an ant-inspired selection algorithm in the university network environment for choosing multimedia transcoding services. From the test results, it is observed that an ant-inspired service selection algorithm outperforms the traditional shortest path selection algorithm in terms of transcoding delay. In addition, we also compare the proposed algorithm with other algorithms through simulation, measure the performance, and find that the proposed algorithm achieves better QoS assurance.

Quality of service (QoS) is essential for the ubiquitous access of media services in real-time distributed video surveillance applications. To have ubiquitous access of desired media with emergency officials' handheld devices, appropriate media transcoding services are required. Currently, it is challenging to select and compose these services for each of the devices to satisfy the desired QoS demand. To compose these media services so that video stream is available for target pervasive and smart devices, a composition algorithm is required. Thus, this paper presents a QoS-aware service composition algorithm to select the best composition for the target ubiquitous client so that it can optimally provide QoS to heterogeneous users. We have implemented a video surveillance prototype to demonstrate the performance of the proposed QoS-aware composition algorithm. Results from this prototype reveal that the approach is suitable for real-time video surveillance.

The past few years have seen a dramatic rise in the distribution channels available to media companies. While media companies once distributed their programming through one or two mediums, such as TV broadcasts and video tapes, the same programming is now also distributed through additional mediums such as the Internet and mobile phones. As a result, the IT systems of these companies are now required to handle both new content formats and to ensure that content is simultaneously and successfully prepared in order to meet scheduling and distribution requirements for multiple delivery pathways. This paper describes a solution that was developed to address the problem. The system presented here was implemented by the Taiwan's Public Television service (PTS) in an effort to improve the effectiveness of daily operation in January 2010 and is currently providing complete support to the company's daily operations. Since implementation, this automated process has increase the average number of transcoding jobs completed daily from 500 to 700 - and increase of 40 percent.

A biologically inspired framework for multimedia service management in a ubiquitous environment

This paper addresses several key issues in distributed multimedia services management and composition such as scalability, heterogeneity, and quality of service (QoS). The proposed framework introduces biologically inspired multimedia service management through the composition of basic multimedia services such as streaming services and different transcoding services. The biologically inspired approach is used for collecting the QoS requirements from individual transcoding services in order to select the most suitable services for the desired composition process. A prototype of the proposed framework is designed, implemented, and evaluated in terms of scalability and load balancing. Copyright (C) 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

With the popularity of ubiquitous multimedia access, there is an increasing demand for appropriate multimedia service selection that satisfies the QoS constraints of the wireless clients. However, due to resource limitations of wireless clients, it is a challenge to select an appropriate service, which is suitable for wireless devices based on their respective QoS demands. To overcome this challenge, we propose a novel QoS-aware multimedia service selection framework, which inherits the adoption of nature-inspired path selection behavior in the service selection. We extend the nature-inspired algorithm to support QoS for multimedia service selection. We also measure the component transcoding service reliability as well as the system reliability.
