A novel splitting strategy for variable block-size image coding based on edge information is presented, which makes it possible to reduce the number of blocks to be encoded while maintaining an in-depth split in edge areas. This approach has been applied to a standard transform coding algorithm, and results have been compared with those obtained by a classical splitting structure. Tests showed a notable increase in the compression factor under the same SNR conditions. Reconstructed images are affected by the blocking effect to a smaller extent, as the problem of generating a large number of small blocks in the uniform areas surrounding an edge is overcome by the proposed split topology.< >

Nonstationarity in image textures requires implementation of variable-size partitioning into stationary regions for coding purposes. The popular methods in regular decomposition fail in accurately following the various region boundaries. In the present work, the boundaries of different textures in the image are detected using a one-dimensional model of each row of the image. The autoregressive algorithm operates in 8 directions to enable an efficient detection of the boundaries. The edge map is then achieved by taking the result of edge detection operation in all directions into account. transform coding and run-length coding are applied to encode the textures and the boundaries, respectively.< >

In bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) the coding and modulation schemes were jointly optimized for the sake of attaining the best possible performance when communicating over fading wireless communication channels. The iterative decoding scheme of BICM (BICM-ID) invoking an appropriate bit-to-symbol mapping strategy enhances its achievable performance in both AWGN and Rayleigh channels. BICM-ID may be conveniently combined with Luby transform (LT) codes, which were designed for handling packetized wireless Internet data traffic in erasure channels without retransmitting the corrupted packets. By jointly designing a serially concatenated LT-BICM-ID code, an infinitesimally low bit error rate (BER) is achieved for signal to noise ratios (SNR) in excess of 7.5 dB over wireless Internet type erasure channels contaminated by AWGN

Designing a transform coder for image data the choice of the transform matrix is a rather important point. In this paper a comparison of the behavior of frequently used transform matrices is given. The processing has been simulated by a computer program system, and the decoded pictures are criticized objectively, for example by use of the mean square error criterion, and subjectively based on the C.C.I.R. recommendation AA/11.

A parallel implementation of the two-dimensional, adaptive blocksize discrete cosine transform (DCT) is based on the principle of the quadtree structure. An efficient coding technique for the quadtree used is described. A network of Inmos T800 transputers is chosen as the target system. Two types of parallel network topologies are analyzed, and the results for execution time are presented. The results show that the tree structure is faster than the pipelining ring structure for this particular application.< >

Modern hybrid video codecs like Versatile Video coding (VVC) heavily rely on transform coding tools. Given a prediction signal at the encoder, the residual is transformed using trigonometric transforms. Rate-distortion-optimized quantization (RDOQ) and entropy coding of the transformed residual is well-understood due to the orthogonality and the energy compaction of these transforms. Within this setting, there is considerable success in optimizing secondary orthogonal transforms. The most prominent example is the Low-Frequency Non-Separable transform (LFNST) in VVC. However, training nonlinear transforms without re-designing the RDOQ and entropy coding stage is a hard problem. In learned image compression, variational autoencoders have shown impressive results, but they use their own entropy model, remain difficult to train for small blocks and RDOQ is nontrivial for them. This paper describes a novel design of a nonlinear transform network for block-based video coding. Given a transform block, a fully-connected neural network predict coefficients from previously reconstructed ones and the adherent block boundary, such that only the residual coefficients need to be transmitted. Furthermore, another neural network filters the entire transform block before the inverse transform is applied and the intra prediction signal is added. Against the Versatile Video coding Test Model 14.2 (VTM-14.2), luma bit-rate savings of approximately 1.9 % are reported for the All-Intra configuration.

The inverse receptive field partition (IRFP) algorithm developed from the receptive field partition (RFP) algorithm, operates on a wavelet basis function network. This technique is a fast method of basis function selection. It begins with the highest resolution wavelet basis functions as its seed functions. Like RFP, IRFP then uses receptive field activation principle during training. This principle insures only wavelets within a specified interval are chosen as candidates. By way of the receptive activation principle, wavelets are selected with the best fit from a precalculated development pool and moved to the main pool. The selection of wavelet coefficients for the main pool is based on best fit across all resolutions. Overall functional fit can be controlled by global MSE and pruning thresholds.

Multiple description coding (MDC) is one of source coding techniques to encode realtime application source into multiple bitstreams. MDC supports multiple quality levels of decoding when transmitted over lossy channels such as packet networks. An MDC source encoder provides different representations of the source such that; when all descriptions are available at the receiver, an high-quality reconstruction of the source is possible, while if only a small number of descriptions is available, a reconstruction is still possible even though a lower quality, but acceptable is obtained. Therefore, this coding technique is expected to apply applications which prefer accepting error of data to retransmitting the lost or erroneous data over multipath noisy network. Multiple Description Correlating transforms coding (MDCTC) is a method to realize MDC with a matrix. Based on this method, this paper proposes the three ratio configuration method for Multiple Description Correlating transforms coding (RMDCTC), which can control the volume ratio of descriptions to source data. Therefore, RMDCTC can adjust the data size ratio among descriptions to fit the ratio of channel bandwidths and is suitable to apply error allowable communicating applications over asymmetric multipath noisy network. In addition, each three ratio configuration method has different feature. Therefore, it is possible to select suitable method as the situation demands. As a result, the proposed methods are more practical method than traditional MDCTC.

A general family of optimal transform coders (TC) is introduced here based on the generalized triangular decomposition (GTD) developed by Jiang, et al. This family includes the Karhunen-Loeve transform (KLT), and the prediction-based lower triangular transform (PLT) introduced by Phoong and Lin, as special cases. The coding gain of the entire family, with optimal bit allocation, is equal to those of the KLT and the PLT. Even though the PLT is not applicable for vectors which are not blocked versions of scalar wide sense stationary (WSS) processes, the GTD based family includes members which are natural extensions of the PLT, and therefore also enjoy the so-called MINLAB structure of the PLT which has the unit noise-gain property. Other special cases of the GTD-TC are the GMD (geometric mean decomposition) and the BID (bidiagonal transform). The GMD in particular has the property that the optimal bit allocation (which is required for achieving the maximum coding gain) is a uniform allocation, thereby eliminating the need for bit allocation.

In this paper, we address the issue of feature compression for distributed image classification systems. Such systems often extract a set of features, such as color, texture and shape, from the raw image data and store them as content descriptors. Users on the network search and exchange information with each other using feature data that contains sufficient information for image classification/retrieval. A query is formed at the client by extracting the features from the sample image, having them compressed and transmitted to the remote server. The corresponding image is classified through comparing the query feature vector with all the entries in the database and finding the most similar ones. We pose this problem as a statistical classification problem and consider the design of a transform coding scheme minimizing the detrimental effect of compression. Different from traditional transform coding which was designed to provide the best reconstruction from compressed data, here the goal is to preserve the separation between the feature vectors generated by different classes. Linear discriminant analysis is used due to the property that discrimination information is preserved in lowest dimensional space in transform domain, so that efficient scalar quantization and entropy coding can be applied to the transform coefficients. We propose a greedy algorithm to perform bit allocation in transform domain such that classification information from all dimensions can be employed in quantizer design. We show that our proposed transform coding scheme achieves much better classification performance than traditional KLT transform coding, based on both real data (Brodatz textures) and synthesized random source.
