Long term objective is to conceive a system on chip of the JPEG coding chain. This article presents the VHDL specification, simulation and also synthesis results, of the two-dimensional discrete cosine transform DCT/spl ***/2D, which constitutes the first block of the JPEG chain. For that, we kept LOEFLER's algorithm which is the best for the DCT implementation, according to a comparison with other architectures. And we targeted the FPGAs as integration technology. Besides, seeing that the DCT is separable as transformation, the two-dimensional discrete cosine transform (DCT/spl ***/2D) can be formed by two one-dimensional discrete cosine transform (DCT/spl ***/1D).

We propose a new no-reference image quality assessment model nPSNR (No-reference PSNR) for JPEG compressed images. The model performs in DCT domain and the DCT coefficient distribution is used. This method estimates the MSQE (mean-squared quantization error) of a decoded image with the distributions of AC coefficients and DC coefficients of the encoded image, for PSNR estimation in DCT domain without reference. We test the proposed model on the selected images from the TID2008 database. Then, the computational scores (nPSNR) are compared with the ground truth values (MOS) based on three commonly-used performance criteria. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach is more consistent with the subjective perception than the state-of-the-art full-reference image quality assessment schemes.

Fetal development needs to be carried out to determine the condition of the fetus in pregnant women. Detection of fetal development can be done using a medical tool called Ultrasonography (USG). Ultrasound images produce color images with varying levels of gray. The problem that occurs in detecting fetal development at this time is that the detection process carried out by medical personnel in identifying fetal development in ultrasound images is still not optimal. Given these shortcomings, image processing is needed to handle problems in the process of measuring fetal development. This research aims to measure fetal development using the image segmentation process. The segmentation process was carried out using thresholding techniques and image morphology, and measurements were continued using the Iterative Randomized Hough transform (IRHT) algorithm. This research uses test data of 35 ultrasound images in Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) format. Based on the tests that have been carried out, the segmentation process using thresholding and morphology techniques can provide an accuracy of 91.16%. With these results, this research has contributed to minimizing errors, increasing measurement accuracy, and providing a stronger basis for making decisions about fetal development.

transform-based image compression performance is measured quantitatively in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR); subjective quality is also important to evaluating performance. An image compression system that incorporates the sensitivities of the human visual system (HVS) can enhance performance. This paper develops new HVS techniques-in the form of perceptual weighting masks derived from the luminance contrast sensitivity function-and illustrates their performance for grayscale and color images using the biorthogonal 9/7 and 22/14 wavelet transforms. Performance is measured quantitatively and qualitatively using a subjective testing procedure with 15 observers. Our HVS methods improve both PSNR and subjective quality for color images; for grayscale images, PSNR values decrease and quality increases.

Social networking websites, specifically Facebook, offer means of reaching wide audiences to share information, including photos, documents, and videos. Social networks post potential critical threats to security and privacy, for example, using steganography to send covert information via Facebook photos. Experiments show that Facebook Cover Photos can effectively hide information to at least twenty percent capacity using Discrete Cosine transform (DCT) coefficient embedding algorithms. JavaScript Facebook application-determined key security properties are desired in a practical steganography implementation, yet, the development of such security properties is missing. Based on our experimental results, we conclude that an automated, Facebook-integrated application is not desirable for these reasons and therefore manual interaction with Facebook should be used for steganography purposes.

A new orthogonal polynomials based transform coding scheme has been presented in this paper. A class of orthogonal polynomial functions for obtaining polynomial operators with different sizes is proposed. The statistical design of experiments paradigm has been used to separate out the spatial variation within the image region due to discriminable low level features from the spatial variation due to unexplained sources called noise. The degree of this separationability can be controlled by specifying the level of signal-to-noise ratio. The process of separation of signals during polynomial transform coding is based on the proposed statistical hypothesis testing procedures. The results are encouraging.

With the rapid development of digital signal processing and computer network technology, the copyright protection of digital products is facing a very severe challenge. The digital watermarking technology mainly hides some digital information in the digital product to achieve the data copyright protection and the content authentication. In this paper, a copy-proof watermarking algorithm for color image based on deep learning is proposed. The YUV space of the color image is selected, and the DCT and binarization of the chrominance component are used to obtain the unique characteristic information of the image. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is robust to noise attack, JPEG compression, filtering and cropping attacks, and can resist copying attacks effectively.

Recently, many researchers started to question a long-standing paradox in the engineering practice of digital photography: oversampling followed by compression, and pursue more intelligent sparse sampling techniques. In this research we take a practical approach of uniform down sampling in image space, and the sampling is made adaptive by a spatially varying directional low-pass prefiltering. Since the down-sampled prefiltered image is a low-resolution image of conventional square sample grid, it can be compressed and transmitted without any change to current image coding standards and systems. The decoder first decompresses the low-resolution image and then upsamples it to the original resolution by least-square estimation using a 2D piecewise autoregressive model and the knowledge of directional low-pass filter. The proposed joint adaptive down-sampling and up-sampling technique outperforms JPEG 2000 (the state-of-the-art in lossy image coding) in PSNR measure at low to modest bit rates and achieves superior visual quality at all bit rates. This work shows that oversampling not only increases cost and energy consumption, but it could, even when coupled with a sophisticated rate-distortion optimized compression scheme, cause inferior image quality at certain bit rates.

A novel decomposition scheme for image compression is presented. It is capable of applying any nonlinear model to compress images in a lossless way. Here, a very efficient polynomial model that considers spatial information as well as order statistic information is introduced. This new rank order polynomial decomposition (ROPD) that allows also for a progressive bitstream is applied to various images of different nature and compared to the morphological subband decomposition (MSD) and to the best prediction mode for lossless compression of the international standard, JPEG. For all compressed images, ROPD provides better compression results than MSD and clearly outperforms the lossless mode of JPEG.

The watermark is more likely to prevent itself from JPEG-compression attack when it is embedded into the DC values of 8×8 DCT blocks. However, embedding the watermark with the same intensity into the DC values of DCT blocks may distort the watermarked image to a large extent. To solve this problem, a novel robust image-watermark algorithm is proposed with the characteristics of selective embedding intensity based on the non-uniform partition. Firstly, following the rectangular partition algorithm, the image has automatically been partitioned into different rectangles which reflect the grey-distribution characteristics in different dimensions. Secondly, the suitable embedded intensities have been chosen, according the number of rectangles within each 8×8 block. Meanwhile, in order to increase the anti-cropping function and the security of the algorithm, MUST* Encryption Algorithm is applied to encrypt the pixel-locations of the watermark before the watermark is embedded. The results of the experiments have showed that this algorithm is robust against noising attack, cropping attack, especially the JPEG-compression attack and no obvious distortion appeared in the watermarked image.
