Open Source Software (OSS) is software whose source code is accessible to the public, allowing its modification and distribution at no cost. This feature encourages the active collaboration of the community of developers, who come together to learn and contribute to the project. The objective of this research work has been to validate the incorporation of the adapted State transition diagrams technique in the Open Source Software project "Sports Tactics Board" to improve its usability. The research results reveal that implementing this technique facilitated the understanding of the requirements and functionalities of the software, as well as the identification and efficient resolution of errors. In addition, using the State transition diagrams technique increased user satisfaction and adoption of the software. Despite the challenges and difficulties encountered in applying this technique, such as the need for closer collaboration between developers and usability experts, the findings indicate that implementing techniques during the OSS development process can significantly improve its usability.

High reliability and availability are the supreme importance of a complex electromechanical system. The imprecise, uncertain, and often inaccurate data collection, uncertainty, and ambiguity have been inevitably associated with a complex industrial system. The Markov approach has proven to be a unified tool to evaluate the reliability of a complex industrial system. In the present research, the author presented a structured and methodological technique to analyze the reliability and availability of various subsystems of coal crushing unit of a thermal power plant using the traditional Markov birth-death process and demonstrated it using a probabilistic approach. The approach consists of breaking up the coal crushing unit/system into various subsystems with three feasible states labeled in the transition diagram. Then using the Markov approach, a probabilistic stochastic model has been developed using Chapman-Kolmogorov equations. The results of the studies are of utmost importance for the plant management in order to take timely decisions for maintaining the system in the upstate for a long duration and take corrective maintenance action.

Performance measures of parallel tandem open queueing network

Purpose The authors consider parallel four-state tandem open queueing network. The queue capacity is infinite. Passenger arrival rate is Poisson distribution and service rate is exponential distribution. The queue is constructed in the form of tandem queue, and each and every queue of tandem queue is single server (M/M/1) queue. In tandem queue, passengers will leave the system once they receive service from both the states. The purpose of this paper is to provide performance analysis for four-state tandem open queue network, and a governing equation is formulated with the help of transition diagram. Using Burke theorem, the authors formulated equation for average number of passenger in the system, average waiting time of passenger in the system, average number of passenger in the queue and average waiting time of passenger in the queue. Design/methodology/approach This paper used Burke's theorem. Findings In this paper, performance analysis is done for parallel four-state tandem open queueing network and performance measure solved using Burkes theorem formula. K. Sreekanth et al. has done performance analysis for single tandem queue with three states. In this paper, the authors have done performance analysis for two tandem queues parallel with four states. This four-state tandem open queueing network is suitable for real world applications. This paper can extend for more number of service states and multi-server states according to the application, and in such case, the authors have to prove and explain with numerical examples. This analysis is more useful for the applications such as airports, railway stations, bus-stands and banks. Originality/value In this paper, parallel four-state tandem open queueing network and performance measure has been solved using Burke's theorem formula.

Stochastic modelling and availability analysis of a critical engineering system

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present the technique for evaluating the performance of a condensate system of a coal-based thermal power plant situated in the northern part of India. The data which used for system availability evaluation are not precise and are uncertain and, further, collected from concerned power plant history sheets and from discussion through plant personnel. Design/methodology/approach In the proposed model, traditional Markov birth-death process using a probabilistic approach is used to analyze the performance of a complex repairable condensate system of power plant up to a desired degree of accuracy. This approach has been demonstrated by breaking the condensate system into six subsystems arranged in series with two feasible states, namely, working and failed, labeled in a transition diagram and modeled as a Markov process, using Chapman-Kolmogorov equations, which are used for development of a probabilistic stochastic model for availability analysis in a more effecting manner, considering some suitable assumptions. Findings This study of analysis of reliability and availability can help in increasing the plant production and performance. The analysis is done with the help of availability matrices, which are developed using different combinations of failures and repair rates of all subsystems. To achieve the goal of maximum power generation, it is required to run the various subsystem of the concerned system of plant, failure free for a long duration. Therefore, the present approach may be a more powerful analysis tool to access the performance of all subsystems of a condensate system in terms of availability level achieved in availability matrices. The results of present study are found to be highly beneficial to the plant management for making maintenance decisions. The relationship of periodic behaviour between coronal index cycles and associated ENSO by using Markov process

Space weather is well recognized by the various solar activities and their cycles. The emission line corona (spectral line 530.3nm) and its distribution reflect the solar activity that is caused by the ecumenical magnetic field. The acknowledgement of this paramountcy cyclic studied (1954 to 2016) under the spectral line 530.3nm and its cycle by Markov chain technique. In utilizing of Markov there is periodic behaviour observed in process of Markov chain in the coronal index (CI) solar cycle, with associated El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The strongest relationship (0.98) is found between the transition matrix of CI and ENSO total cycles using the 2-dimensional correlation. Moreover, the validity of the Markov chain analyses is endorsed by dependency and stationary test of CI and ENSO data. Results indicate that CI can define the solar geomagnetic effect on ENSO as a solar activity like sunspot activity. Similarly, return periods of both the data sets demonstrate the highest number of visits in state 3. Since CI and sunspots are associated with performing the space climate. The individual relationship of CI to the earth's climatic parameter may open the new directions to understand the climate variation.

Sunspots and ENSO relationship using Markov method

The various techniques have been used to confer the existence of significant relations between the number of Sunspots and different terrestrial climate parameters such as rainfall, temperature, dewdrops, aerosol and ENSO etc. Improved understanding and modelling of Sunspots variations can explore the information about the related variables. This study uses a Markov chain method to find the relations between monthly Sunspots and ENSO data of two epochs (1996-2009 and 1950-2014). Corresponding transition matrices of both data sets appear similar and it is qualitatively evaluated by high values of 2-dimensional correlation found between transition matrices of ENSO and Sunspots. The associated transition diagrams show that each state communicates with the others. Presence of stronger self-communication (between same states) confirms periodic behaviour among the states. Moreover, closeness found in the expected number of visits from one state to the other show the existence of a possible relation between Sunspots and ENSO data. Moreover, perfect validation of dependency and stationary tests endorses the applicability of the Markov chain analyses on Sunspots and ENSO data. This shows that a significant relation between Sunspots and ENSO data exists. Improved understanding and modelling of Sunspots variations can help to explore the information about the related variables. transitions of Hexangulations on the Sphere

A hexangulation G is a 2-connected simple plane graph such that each face of G is bounded by a 6-cycle. It was recently proved that any two hexangulations with the same number of vertices can be transformed into each other by three specifically defined transformations and . We prove that any two hexangulations G and G' with bipartitions {B, W} and {B', W'}, respectively, such that |B| = |B'| and |W| = |W'|, can be transformed into each other by successive applications of operations in . Moreover, we completely describe the role of the four operations and in the transition diagram of hexangulations.

In the current study a physical based threshold is used to calculate the transition from mild to severe wear. This threshold is formed by using a local coefficient of friction, which is split into two regimes: one high friction regime with a coefficient of friction of in the range of 0.1-0.15 and a high frictional regime in the range of 0.3-0.4. The transition from one to another is determined by the local transition of the predetermined critical contact temperature. To validate the model an experimental transition diagram is determined. The experimental results agree with the simulation for both the location of the transition as for the severity of the adhesive wear. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Single Server Queueing Models and Birth-Death Process

A transition diagram is used to describe the behavior of systems. Birth-death equations were derived from transition diagram depicting the state of the birth-death processes. Queue models and characteristics of queue models are also derivable from birth-death processes. These queue models consist of mathematical formulas and relationships that can be used to determine the operating characteristics （performance measures） for a waiting line. Schematic and transition diagrams of different single server queue models were shown. Relationships between birth-death processes, waiting lines （queues） and transition diagrams were given. While M/M/I/K queue model states was limited by K customers and had （K＋I） states, M/M/1/1 queue model had only two states. M/G/1/∝/∝ and M/M/1/∝/∝ shared similar characteristics. Many ideal queuing situations employ M/M/1 queueing model.
