The reliable operation, dynamic performance analysis and control strategy research of a switched reluctance motor (SRM) require an online monitoring system to display and record its operating status. However, due to the large amount of data, the nonlinear electromagnetic characteristics and the harsh working environment of SRM, it is very difficult to monitor a SRM's operation status in real time. In order to solve these problems, a new structure of the SRM monitoring system, which uses Digital Signal Processor (DSP) and the hardwired transmission control protocol/internet protocol embedded Ethernet controller W5500, is presented in this paper. The W5500 and DSP's direct memory access modules are employed for data capture and transfer to reduce the digital signal processing workload. The digital signal processing program is implemented by the hybrid programming method, which shortens the filtering time. Consequently, the DSP has sufficient resources to acquire multiple signals with a high sampling frequency and can adopt a more complex filtering algorithm, which enhances the accuracy and real-time performance of the system. Moreover, the amplitude-frequency characteristics of signals are analyzed. Then, the detection circuits and finite impulse response filters are designed to achieve the targeted acquisition and filtering. Besides, the impact of harsh environment on the system is reduced by adjusting the data transmission modes according to different working conditions. As a result, the scope of application of the system has been extended. The proposed system has a novel structure and strong practicability, which exhibits great guiding significance for the development of a SRM.

Purpose - The first purpose of this paper is to propose a scalable video coding scheme providing flexibility in video transmission, especially under wireless environment. The second purpose is to analyze the problem of lengthening the key frame interval in distributed video coding (DVC), and propose an approach to improve the rate-distortion (RD) performance of DVC for long group-of-frames (GOF) size. Design/methodology/approach - In the proposed scheme, a base layer is first obtained from an H.264 coder. When a DVC coder is then used to code the enhancement layer, information in processing the base layer is extracted and analyzed to make multiple side-information available and reduce error accumulation for DVC coding, thus further improving the performance of the DVC coder. Findings - By dividing video into base and enhancement layers, the combined video coding architecture enables a flexible video transmission. In addition, several methods are used to improve the RD performance in DVC coding. Simulation shows that the proposed scheme outperforms non-scalable DVC for long GOF size. Originality/value - Prediction from the decoding loop in base layer encoder largely reduces enhancement layer spatial redundancy. Multiple side-information provides better estimation for DVC reconstruction. Long prediction loop is more reliable because error accumulation is effectively compensated.

Web intelligence analyses of digital libraries A case study of the National electronic Library for Health (NeLH)

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to explore the use of LexiURL as a Web intelligence tool for collecting and analysing links to digital libraries, focusing specifically on the National electronic Library for Health (NeLH). Design/methodology/approach - The Web intelligence techniques in this study are a combination of link analysis (web structure mining), web server log file analysis (web usage mining), and text analysis (web content mining), utilizing the power of commercial search engines and drawing upon the information science fields of bibliometrics and webometrics. LexiURL is a computer program designed to calculate summary statistics for lists of links or URLs. Its output is a series of standard reports, for example listing and counting all of the different domain names in the data. Findings - Link data, when analysed together with user transaction log files (i.e. Web referring domains) can provide insights into who is using a digital library and when, and who could be using the digital library if they are "surfing" a particular part of the Web;in this case any site that is linked to or colinked with the NeLH. This study found that the NeLH was embedded in a multifaceted Web context, including many governmental, educational, commercial and organisational sites, with the most interesting being sites from *** domain, representing American Universities. Not many links directed to the NeLH were followed on September 25, 2005 (the date of the log file analysis and link extraction analysis), which means that users who access the digital library have been arriving at the site via only a few select links, bookmarks and search engine searches, or non-electronic sources. Originality/value - A number of studies concerning digital library users have been carried out using log file analysis as a research tool. The fastest growth of data communication Networks over the past decades has resulted in the development of sophisticated tools to diagnose, debug and analyze such networks. We have developed a toolkit called MENeT (Monitor for Ethernet Network Traffic). The toolkit is an extension to the earlier developed utility for Traffic Monitoring. The toolkit is operational on the platform of windows NT/2000 and is developed by programming in Microsoft Visual C++ environment. The MENeT captures and dissembles the packets flowing through a system and extracts TCP/IP (transmission control protocol/internet protocol) packets only. MENeT monitors network traffic by partitioning it into a set of classes. The set of classes are defined as Network Traffic, Broadcast Traffic and Workstation Traffic. It measures traffic at a time scale ranging from a few seconds to several minutes. Using the fine-grained information that MENeT exports, proves its effectiveness for monitoring and protocol analysis. The work on presenting the statistics to portray the Network Traffic from every angle is in place.

Data rate estimation algorithm for IEEE 802.11e HCCA scheduler

Purpose - As the real-time applications used in today's wireless network grow, some schemes are required to provide better quality of services. From the evaluation of referenced scheduling scheme provided in IEEE 802.11e standard document, we know that it does not perform well on traffic which is not strictly constant-bit-rate (CBR). Therefore, it is necessary to design a more flexible scheme to dynamically adjust the estimation of transmission opportunity allocated to QoS-enhanced stations with different characteristics of applications. This paper aims to present a data rate estimation algorithm for the scheduler of the IEEE 802.11e hybrid coordination function controlled channel access. Design/methodology/approach - The performance of the algorithm is evaluated through Network Simulator-2. Findings - With the proposed algorithm, the QoS access point can provide guaranteed parameters such as delay and throughput for both the real-time variable-bit-rate and CBR traffics. Originality/valve - The paper presents a data rate estimation algorithm for IEEE 802-11e HCCA scheduler.

Some reflections on IPv6 adoption in Australia

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to put forward a case for increased research into the likely economic impact in Australia of early or late diffusion of IPv6, and to argue that Government intervention may be necessary. Design/methodology/approach The paper characterises the approach to IPv6 in Australia to date as generally laissez-faire, and compares this with diffusion and promotion efforts in countries in which IPv6 has become more widely adopted. Findings The paper finds that IPv6 diffusion is inevitable in the long term, but early diffusion is unlikely in the absence of government action. The likely economic impact on Australia of early versus late IPv6 diffusion is unknown, yet it is potentially of national interest. Originality/value This study identifies the need for research into the economic impact of IPv6 diffusion in Australia and is relevant to individuals and organisations involved in telecommunications and policy and research funding. © 2008, Emerald Group Publishing Limited

Analysis of QoS for DVB-RCS-based IP network

Purpose – The internet has been used to transport data in the form of packet. Multimedia applications including voice and video are being sent using the internet. In the past, the internet did not support any kind of sophisticated quality of service (QoS) mechanism. Although the type of service (ToS) field in the internet protocol (IP) header has been present and allowed the differentiated treatment of packets, it was never really used on a large-scale. IP applications have been mostly used on terrestrial networks so far. This paper aims to describe the architecture of a DVB-RCS based satellite network supporting interactive and multimedia applications. Design/methodology/apporach – The use of TCP/IP has made it possible to have two way communication using open standard satellite networks based on digital video broadcast return channel via satellite (DVB-RCS). The voice and video are sensitive to delay and jitter so bandwidth must be guaranteed while transporting it. With the extensive use of IP for carrying voice and video, there is a need to add QoS functionality in satellite networks. The performance of data transfer using voice and video with reference to QoS parameters in satellite network is analyzed in this paper. Findings – The results show that satellite networks based on DVB-RCS can carry voice and video traffic and offer good quality of service in terms of packet loss and jitter but are poor in quality in terms of packet delay. Originality/value – This paper describes the architecture of a DVB-RCS based satellite network supporting interactive and multimedia applications. © 2008, Emerald Group Publishing Limited

The IP address and time in cybercrime investigation

Purpose Cyber technology is an extremely complicated field and the internet is being increasingly used as a place to commit crimes using personal computers, as well as networkbased computers. Although cyber investigation is still in the early stages of its development, the burgeoning use of the internet has increased the necessity for digital investigations. The purpose of this paper is to increase awareness of the latest in digital comparison for cybercrime investigation with the studies of IPaddress and time in computer systems. Design/methodology/approach The approach to improving a cybercrime investigation is proposed in three stages: independent verification of digital clues, corresponding information from different sources, and preparation of a valid argument. Findings If the police and other authorities do not stay on top of this problem, they may lose the battle to control this cybercrime explosion. The paper discusses how Taiwanese police investigate cybercrime and the experience is able to propagate when analyzing IPaddress and time with crimecase. It is believed that this proposed approach creates a comprehensive guide that provides support and assistance to crime investigators. Practical implications IPaddress and time, both indicated in this paper, are the key ingredients to identify the suspect in the beginning of investigation works. As the study shows: there is no guarantee that there always will be the “right” evidence to prove everything;investigators should try their utmost to avoid making mistakes;criminal investigators must find additional clues and proof to validate their suspicions. Originality/value This paper illustrates an approach to the investigation of cybercrime in the case of studying IPaddress and time. It is believed that the research can efficiently assist law enforcement officials in dealing with everincreasing cybercrime by using effective digital evidence. © 2009, Emerald Group Publishing Limited

Universal service in an IP-enabled NGN environment

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to identify concerns developing in regard to current approaches used to define, deliver and fund universal service obligations (USOs) for telecommunications due to developments in competition, new technology, e.g. wireless, convergence and next generation networks (NGN), including voice over internet protocol (VoIP). To stimulate thinking about the policies required to deliver USOs in an IP-enabled NGN environment. Design/methodology/approach - The paper examines the nature and scope of USOs, including the concept of "functional internet access" to address questions about whether in an NGN environment: present USOs are sustainable;USOs need to change;and whether USOs should include access to broadband? The paper also examines alternative/complementary sources of funding for USOs. Findings - With falling revenue (due to increasing competition and declining prices) occurring alongside strong demand for funds to deploy NGN, telecommunications operators are less able to provide USOs sustained by cross-subsidisation. Universal service funds, too, may be under pressure. Also there is likely to be an uneven migration to NGN since it is likely that NGN will be deployed first in more profitable, densely populated areas and then only later (if at all) in relatively less commercially viable rural/remote areas. The paper concludes that present USOs can be maintained in an NGN environment. It concludes that since USOs is an evolving concept, there should be regular systematic reviews of whether USOs should be extended to include broadband. The paper concludes that increased funding from general taxation revenue is warranted and would link decisions concerning the nature and scope of USOs more closely with financial responsibility for such decisions.
