In this paper, we incorporate trellis coded quantization (TCQ) into a two-stage multiple description coding structure to obtain granular gain over two-stage multiple description Scalar Quantizer (SQ). Analysis and experiment on Gaussian signal show that the performance of the proposed scheme can achieve larger gain than that of the two-stage SQ scheme because of better performance of TCQ. The proposed scheme for image coding is shown to be more effective than other relevant multiple description image coding schemes in terms of central-side-distortion rate performance.

In this paper, a block-constrained trellis coded quantization (BC-TCQ) algorithm is combined with an algebraic codebook to produce an algebraic trellis code (ATC) to be used in ACELP coding. In ATC, the set of allowed algebraic codebook pulse positions is expanded, and the expanded set is partitioned into subsets of pulse positions;the trellis branches are labeled with these subsets. The list Viterbi algorithm (LVA) is used to select the excitation codevector. The combination of an ATC codebook and LVA trellis search algorithm is denoted as an ATC-LVA block code. The ATC-LVA block code is used as the fixed codebook of the AMR-WB 8.85 kbps mode, reducing complexity compared to the conventional algebraic codebook.

On joint source and channel coding using trellis coded CPM: Analytical bounds on the channel distortion

Joint source and channel coding (JSCC) using trellis coded quantization (TCQ) in conjunction with trellis coded continuous phase modulation (CPM) is studied. The channel is assumed to be the additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Analytical bounds on the channel distortion for the investigated systems with maximum-likelihood sequence detection (MLSD) are developed. The bounds are based on the transfer function technique, which was modified and generalized to include continuous-amplitude discrete-time signals. For a memoryless;uniform source, the constructed bounds for the investigated systems are shown to be asymptotically tight for increasing channel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values. For a memoryless nonuniform source, the constructed bounds are not as tight as the one for the uniform source, however, it still can be used as an indication to how the system performs. It is concluded that the minimum Euclidean distance of the system alone is not enough to evaluate the performance of the considered systems. The number of error events having minimum Euclidean distance and the total distortion caused by those error events also affect the asymptotic performance. This work provides an analysis tool for the investigated systems. The analysis method is very general. It may be applied to any trellis based JSCC schemes. Index

Low-Complexity Wideband LSF quantization Using Algebraic trellis VQ

In this paper an algebraic trellis vector quantization (ATVQ) that introduces algebraic codebooks into trellis coded vector quantization (TCVQ) structure is presented. Low encoding complexity and minimum memory storage requirements are achieved using the proposed approach. It exploits advantages of both the TCVQ and the algebraic codebooks to know the delayed decision, the codebook widening, the low computational complexity and the no storage of codebook. This novel vector quantization scheme is used to encode the wideband speech line spectral frequencies (LSF) parameters. Experimental results on wideband speech have shown that ATVQ yields the same performance as the traditional split vector quantization (SVQ) and the TCVQ in terms of spectral distortion (SD). It can achieve a transparent quality at 47 bits/frame with a considerable reduction of memory storage and computation complexity when compared to SVQ and TCVQ.

The trellis-based scalar-vector quantizer (TB-SVQ) can achieve the rate-distortion performance bound for memoryless sources. This paper extends the scope of this quantizer to coding of sources viith memory. First considered is a simple extension, called the predictive TB-SVQ, which applies a closed-loop predictive coding operation in each survivor path of the Viterbi codebook search algorithm, Although the predictive TB-SVQ outperforms all other known structured fixed-rate vector quantizers, due to practical reasons, it may not approach the rate-distortion Limit. A new quantization scheme motivated by the preceding idea of Laroia ft al,. called the preceded TB-SVQ, is also considered;the granular gain is realized by the underlying trellis code while the combination of the precoder and the SVQ structure pro,ides the boundary gain. This new quantization scheme is asymptotically optimal and can, in principle, approach the rate-distortion bound for Markov sources.

Quadtree-based classification in subband image coding

Classification of blocks of subband samples according to their energy and variable bit allocation within the subsequent classes has demonstrated considerable gains in coding efficiency. The gains due to classification increase as smaller blocks are used;however, this increases the overheads for transmitting the classification information. In this paper, a quadtree based method is proposed. This method allows for more efficient classification by using variable-sized blocks in order to maximize the classification gain, while maintaining a limit on the classification overheads. This method is applied for subband coding of images and the results indicate that it performs better than the other methods currently available in the literature. (C) 2003 Elsevier Inc. Channel optimized robust image coding over noisy channels

A wavelet-based robust image coding technique for image transmission over noisy channels is presented here. The system combines classification and optimal bit allocation along with robust quantization to produce an inherent error-resistant bitstream without channel coding. In order to improve coding efficiency, an iterative algorithm is developed for implementing optimal bit allocation involving both rate distortion and channel optimization. Also, a modified channel optimized uniform trellis coded quantization (TCQ) with a low computational complexity, yet an effective performance, is proposed and used to provide robust quantization. The system achieves both efficient image compression and robust image transmission over noisy channels. Computer simulations indicate that the proposed scheme is effective, even under mismatched channel conditions, and the performance is competitive with other robust image compression techniques. The Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) within the ISO international standards organization is defining a new standard for still image compression - JPEG-2000. This paper describes the Wavelet trellis coded quantization (WTCQ) algorithm submitted by SAIC and The University of Arizona to the JPEG-2000 standardization activity. WTCQ is the basis of the current Verification Model (VM) being used by JPEG participants to conduct algorithm experiments. The outcomes from these experiments will lead to the ultimate specification of the JPEG-2000 algorithm. Prior to describing WTCQ and its subsequent evolution into the initial JPEG-2000 VM, a brief overview of the objectives of JPEG-2000 and the process by which it is being developed is presented.

We propose a close-to-capacity dirty-paper coding (DPC) framework that employs multi-level low density parity-check (LDPC) codes and trellis coded quantization. The proposed coding framework is robust in the sense that it performs close to capacity in both the high and the low rate regimes. This is in contrast to existing practical DPC schemes that perform well at either one of these regimes, but not both. In order to evaluate the performance of our scheme, we consider its application to a cognitive radio channel. At a block length of 2X10(5), the designed dirty-paper coding scheme operates within 0.6, 0.58 and 0.95 dB of the theoretical limit at transmission rates of 1.5, 1.0 and 0.5 bits/sample, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the best performance reported in the literature so far.

Separate source-channel (SSC) coding is known to be sub-optimal for communicating correlated Gaussian sources over fading Gaussian multiple-access channel (GMAC). Considering the two-to-one GMAC with Rayleigh block fading and no transmitter-side channel-state information (CSI), a recent work demonstrated a simple fixed-rate joint source-channel (JSC) coding scheme referred to as source-channel trellis coded vector quantization (SC-TCVQ). This paper presents a new extension to SC-TCVQ which is shown to further improve performance with only a minor increase in encoder complexity. New results are presented which show that this finite block-length JSC coding scheme can beat the asymptotic performance upper bound of SSC coding.
