In this paper, Bussgang algorithm is developed as a blind equalizer for multi-carrier multi-input multi-output (MIMO) channels to combat both spatial multiplexing interference and channel variations. Also, the Bussgang technique is extended with adapting the one or two parameters in its nonlinear function. The Bussgang algorithm and its two extended version are simulated and compared to the full known channel (ideal) and decision directed cases. Frame error rate (FER) and bit error rate (BER) of both coded and uncoded cases, are considered as comparison criteria and it is shown that the much performance improvement is achieved compared to decision directed algorithm and each of the three proposed schemes presents the best performance in the different criteria and Eb/N0.

Although a significant amount of coding gain can be achieved, the binary turbo code does not have good bandwidth efficiency unless it is heavily punctured. turbo trellis coded modulation (TTCM) can provide good turbo code performance without bandwidth expansion. However, it requires unique code design. The simplest way to attain both power and bandwidth efficiency is to adopt high-order modulation schemes with a commonly studied binary turbo code. This approach requires a conversion of demodulator output, which is associated with the nonbinary channel symbol, into bit metrics to input to the binary turbo decoder. This paper investigates various conversion functions for 16QAM and 64QAM constellations. The turbo coded bit-error-rate performances are compared using these metrics.

In this paper, we study the performance of the channel estimation in a turbo coded, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) with multiple antennas at the receiver. We survey the accuracy of the channel estimation for different number of users and different number of pilot subcarriers. Moreover, since there is not a closed form solution to the BER of the turbo coded system for different number of constellation size. We develop an equation to obtain the BER bound of the turbo coded OFDM/SDMA system with M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (MQAM) in the Rayleigh flat fading channel as a function of the signal constellation and characteristic of the turbo code with a curve fitting and then propose a method for selecting switching threshold in adaptive modulation case.

The Cross-Entropy-based (CE-based) stopping criteria advantage is able to terminate early in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) while maintain the bit error rate (BER) performance. Unfortunately, the criteria fails to cope with low SNR region and make the decoder iterates until maximum or infinite iteration. This paper proposed an early termination technique at low SNR for the CE-based stopping criteria using the decoding threshold derived by the measurement of reliability (MOR) at low SNR. In the simulation results and analysis, we compare the average iteration number (AIN) and the bit-error rate (BER) performance between the proposed combination methods with the existing CE-based stopping criteria. From the results, the combination method capable to reduce the AIN at low SNR with minimum one AIN while maintaining the AIN at high SNR as the traditional method. This significant reduction could reduce delay and complexity of existing CE-based stopping criteria while maintaining the BER performances.

This paper aims to present the results that can be obtained with a conventional multiuser detector used in conjunction with turbo encoding in order to improve its performance, evaluated in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER) as a function of Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR). We used extensive Monte Carlo simulations, taking into consideration different combinations with respect to the number of users, the cross-correlation between them, amplitude vectors but also turbo decoding algorithms.

In this paper, we investigate the performance of iterative decoding for concatenated turbo coded and Space-time block coded (STBC) system. In our proposed system the soft parity bit needs to be estimated, which differs from traditional turbo decoding, as the receiver adopts iterative decoding not only to turbo codes but the entire system. In this case a simplified and effective method of parity bit estimation is presented, which we focus on, resulting in a moderate increase of complexity. Simulation results demonstrate that performance improvement can be obtained using the iterative scheme. Meanwhile the increase of complexity caused by iteration and parity bit estimation in exchange for performance improvement is considered. Our proposed scheme makes an optimal trade-off between complexity and performance for transmitting in Rayleigh fading channel.

One of the most important parts of the vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication is reliable transmission that allows the achievement of good throughput in the system. In terms of high system throughput, two issues need to be taken into consideration. First, accurate estimation that is crucial for the successful application of equalization and demodulation, since V2X channel characteristics are very time-varying. Second, properly chosen channel coding. This paper presents effective channel estimation that requires only a slight modification to the 802.11p standard pilot scheme and also presents the impact of turbo coding on system throughput.

The requirement of turbo decoding in 3G wireless standards has forced handset designers to consider power consumption issues in their implementations. The phenomenal performance of turbo codes comes at the expense of computation. Primarily this paper looks at methods of substantially reducing the power consumption for the decoding operation, making it feasible to integrate turbo decoders into a low power handset. The techniques presented include early termination of the turbo process, encoding of extrinsic information to reduce the memory size, and disabling portions of the MAP algorithm when the results will not affect the decoded output. The net result of these techniques is almost a 70% reduction in power over a fixed 6 iteration, 8-state baseline turbo decoder at 2 dB;of signal to noise ratio (SNR).

This paper presents simulation results demonstrating the performance of OFDM system over vehicular ad-hoc networks, based on IEEE 802.11p specifications, employing turbo coding. The system is focused on vehicle safety applications using ad-hoc communication and networking. IEEE 802.11p defines modifications to IEEE 802.11 to enhance road transport and traffic applications. The standard is based on IEEE 802.11a and intends to support both public safety and licensed private operations over communication channels. The current contribution presents results of system performance evaluation of IEEE 802.11p turbo coding scheme and compares it to the already specified scheme. The turbo coding scheme achieves significant improvement to the performance compared to other techniques. The FEC system model with and without the turbo scheme is later implemented in a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) from Xilinx using an Electronic System Level (ESL) methodology.

The paper analyzes the performances provided by two algorithms that combine the network and distributed channel coding in cooperative schemes with a relay-node serving two mobile stations, placed symmetrically and asymmetrically vs. the base-station. The analysis is performed in scenarios that consider error-affected mobile - relay node channels. It also proposes a low complexity hybrid coded cooperation algorithm that employs adaptively the cooperative or the non-cooperative transmissions. The selection of the cooperation mode is based on the bit error probability estimation on the mobile - relay node channels.
