The next generation technology of HomePlug, called HomePlug AV, aims at providing very high-quality connectivity for the in-home distribution of data and multi-stream entertainment using existing power-line wiring. To obtain very robust performance a powerful turbo convolutional code is adopted. In this paper, by means of simulations, the performance of the turbo coded HomePlug AV system is examined under a realistic power-line channel model. In particular, the effects of the interleaver's length and of the number of iterations in an improved Max-Log-MAP turbo decoder are investigated. Results show that few iterations of the turbo decoding process give a massive gain in performance under the considered environment.

Asthma is a disorder characterized by chronic airway inflammation, airway hypersensitivity to a variety of stimuli, and airway obstruction that is at least partially or even completely reversible. To make correct diagnosis of asthma, diagnosis must be based on typical symptoms of asthma and identification of airway hyper responsiveness (AHR) or variable airway obstruction. In some cases, additionally we need to use bronchial provocation test using nonspecific stimuli, such as methacholine or histamine, what is useful for the determination of AHR. However, it is somewhat invasive in nature and it is not available in primary-care clinics or even in many general hospitals. Bronchodilator response (BDR) to short-acting β2-agonists is a valuable test to evaluate variable airway obstruction, which is only useful in patients with reduced lung function at the time of visit. Developed integrated software suite is user friendly tool which considers all this parameters to assist clinicians in the analysis and interpretation of pulmonary function tests data to better detect, diagnose, and treat asthma conditions. A total sum of 72 patient reports with previously diagnosed asthma by clinicians was tested with this tool. The software has performed the classification of asthma in the same way as doctors in 65 (90.27%) cases.

In this paper, a joint detection algorithm is proposed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) channels. In MIMO OFDM channels, if enough cyclic prefix (CP) is used, inter symbol interference is completely cancelled and consequently spatial multiplexing interference (SMI) is the main limiting factor in performance. The proposed algorithm is based on a new soft parallel interference cancellation (SPIC) technique where, in each iteration, a part of SMI proportional to the probability of correctness of estimation in last iteration is cancelled. This probability is calculated approximately assuming the correct estimation for other sub-streams in last iteration. The proposed algorithm approaches the optimum performance in only a few iterations. The proposed algorithm is simulated for 4 states 1/2 turbo code and 8×12, 12×12 and 4×4 MIMO OFDM channels for different values of the E{sub}b/N{sub}0. Bit error rate (BER) and frame error rate (FER) are considered as comparison criteria and it is shown that its performance is good and very close to interference free (lower bound) case.
