The authors present a brief survey on the evolution of user interface (ui) development technology, especially over the past two decades, shaped by the desktop, Web, and mobile eras. From the technology mainstream, the authors describe form-oriented, template-based, object-oriented, hybrid, and declarative frameworks and address model-driven and generic approaches. The focus of this article is on a framework of ui development concerns and how these have been addressed in each analyzed technology or group of technologies. At the end, the authors summarize current issues and future directions of ui development in general. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Dear editor,Smartphones and tablets with rich graphical user interfaces (Gui) are becoming increasingly popular. Gui design plays an important role in offering a smooth user experience. The complexity of the apps often depends on the user interface (ui)[1]with minor data processing or data processing delegates to the backend component.

We present a new approach for assessing the business performance of a mobile user interface (ui) project at its predevelopment stage. Traditionally, the performance measurement of a mobile ui is made from the perspective of usability. Yet, as the number of mobile phone users is rapidly increasing, and, given that stakeholders are beginning to realize the importance of the ui, there is a growing demand to measure its business performance quantitatively as well as qualitatively. This article presents a model that can facilitate Return on Investment (ROI) estimations pertaining to the development of a mobile ui before the service with the new ui is launched. We base our method on stated preference data for the purpose of applying a conjoint analysis. Subsequently, we evaluate the viability of the proposed model quantitatively by comparing the estimated ROI at the predevelopment stage with the actual sales revenue achieved after the launch of the service. The proposed model was successfully applied to real-world mobile ui design projects at Korea Telecom. Its benefits are demonstrated here through a case study. (c) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The lack of accessibility awareness among industry professionals is one of the reasons for rampant inaccessible websites and applications. This problem is exacerbated by the industry norm of having a single place dedicated to accessibility in the documentation of ui frameworks, which makes accessibility difficult for developers to discover and implement as part of their workflows. This paper presents the Blended Approach (BA), a novel approach and framework for improving accessibility awareness through documentation. Unlike the conventional practice, it recommends sprinkling and repeating short snippets on accessibility throughout the documentation while linking developers to detailed explanations on the dedicated accessibility page. Thus, BA places the topic of accessibility on an equal footing as other common programming concerns such as performance, security, and UX. As a case study, we applied BA to the onboarding tutorial of Flutter, a popular ui toolkit. The positive feedback we received in our evaluation with 11 professional developers suggests BA can be a viable and effective approach.

User Interface (ui) guidelines, used across various enterprise products or applications of a company bring consistency and cohesiveness between them. This paper discusses the user research studies carried out to arrive at a minimum threshold of visual components required to help multiple products retain the perception of consistency between interfaces. These studies help identify which elements and which combinations of these elements can help build associations. Our results showed that among various ui components, background color, header-footer and button color were the most influential, in that order. We also studied how various combinations in the background color of the content area plus header-footer would lead to increase or decrease in association.

While applications and user interfaces (ui) for elderly people have been discussed by various authors, the specific requirements of people in the transition age from work life to retirement (55-75 years) have not been analyzed in detail yet. Therefore, in this paper we present results from a qualitative empirical analysis within this age group, evaluate their specific usage behavior and system requirements and derive basic ui design guidelines from it. The results indicate that indeed this age group differs in its requirements from older people (75+) mainly considered in the existing literature. (c) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.
