Like all software artifacts, metamodels frequently evolve in response to various factors, such as technological advances or changing user requirements. When a metamodel evolves, a simple change can affect all associated artifacts, including models, code generators, transformation rules and consistency constraints. As a result, these artifacts may no longer be compliant. The main challenge is how to adapt and maintain the consistency and conformity of the initial artifacts to the updated metamodel. Several approaches have been proposed, focusing exclusively on model co-evolution during metamodel evolution. In this paper, we propose an approach to address the evolution of the uml sequence diagram metamodel. Our approach consists in calculating and analyzing the differences between the initial metamodel and the evolved metamodel. These differences are used to define transformation rules that enable the models to co-evolve. The application of Service- Oriented Architecture (SOA) system software in safety-critical areas such as aerospace is gradually increasing, and the demand of high-quality SOA system software is increasing too. Due to the fea ture of loose coupling, SOA system software depends strongly on the correctness of the interfaces among services. Web service composition (WSC) testing in the integration phase of service composition thus becomes exceptionally critical. In a model-based testing framework, the test model lays a foundation for the subsequent test activities to proceed smoo thly. In this paper, we propose an approach to automate modeling for WSC testing. The idea is to automate the construction of a highly visualized model by fetching adequate test information from two documents in the design phase. Compared to the existing modeling methods, the proposed me thod is more sufficient in WSC test information extraction. In addition, we also promote the degree of visualization and automation for test modeling. In the end, a case study is conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed modeling approach.

The Perceptual Hash algorithm has been widely used, especially to detect similarity or plagiarism of an image. Of course, this ability is applicable in education fields, such as plagiarism detection in collecting assignments for designing uml sequence diagrams. However, the algorithm's ability to detect image similarity may be affected by disturbances or changes in the image. Therefore in this paper, we researched the effect of disturbances in uml sequence diagram images on the ability to detect image similarity that the Perceptual Hash algorithm can do. The image disturbances we studied are rotating and skewing, which may be reasonable for students. These disturbances were tested on digitally generated images. The test results show that the Perceptual Hash algorithm's ability to detect the similarity of uml sequence diagram images is not affected by disturbances that occur in the image. The algorithm can still detect plagiarism attempts on uml sequence diagram images that have disrupted with a similarity detection rate above 60%.

Nowadays, maintenance is the most expensive activity in the software life cycle. The modular system is easy to maintain. A system is said to be modular if its components have weak coupling and strong cohesion. Cohesion is a very important software feature in the design of a computer application. We propose to evaluate this characteristic in the design level. In this article, we propose an approach to automatically detect the type of cohesion in the object-oriented design level. We have developed an algorithm to detect the weakest type of cohesion. Designers and developers focus then on maximizing the possible cohesion through the meaning of the redesign to achieve strong cohesion for the future system. Therefore, the proposed strategy detects the cohesion types for each object in a uml sequence diagram. We also provided a case study in which the proposed approach has been applied. Then, to validate the proposed strategy, we adapted the results obtained in a fuzzy architecture. And finally, the output of fuzzy architecture is a fuzzy membership function of total output cohesion. Results show that our approach helps designers and software developers to get software products of better quality.

This research aims to automated software size measurement for both functional and structural view. Software size is used to estimate schedule, effort, cost and other resource in software development process. Therefore, the best method to measure software size is to derive software attributes from requirement artifacts to get early estimation. uml sequence diagram chose as source to extract software function, since this diagram provide high level granularity of function. Functional size is measured by using COSMIC method, while structural size is calculated based on control structure on sequence diagram. To automate the measurement process, XML structure of sequence diagram is analyzed to fit existing functional and structural equation. A well-known case study of rice cooker is used to depict the proposed method in this research. In addition, a simple support tool is provided.

The quality of source code is an important stake for the construction of software. The source code quality facilitates the maintenance and the evolution of the program. In the object-oriented paradigm, a modular system is easy to maintain thanks to its components with strong cohesion and weak or low coupling. Weak coupling is among the key factor to reduce the cost and the deadline of the system developing and maintaining. We propose to evaluate this factor since the design of system. In this paper, the proposed approach consists in the automatic detection of coupling type in the object-oriented design level. To do this, we have elaborated rules to detect the strongest coupling type. It belongs then to the designer to do redesign for a weak coupling code. As a result, the proposed strategy detects the types of coupling within each uml sequence diagram object at the design level. To validate our strategy, we conducted a case study. Then, the results obtained are adapted in a fuzzy architecture for validation. And finally, the output of the fuzzy architecture is a fuzzy membership function of total output coupling. The results show that our approach helps designers and software developers to obtain a better quality of software product.

The Unified Modeling Language (uml) is rapidly emerging as a de-facto standard used for software specifications and uml sequence diagrams provide a visual technique to model and depict software behaviors. However, sequence diagrams cannot automatically analyze and verify software behaviors due to lack of strict semantics. To ensure the reliability of software systems, a behavior description and formal verification approach called formal sequence is proposed in this paper, which integrates extended uml sequence diagram and automata model. Firstly, sequence diagram is extended and formally defined into a two-dimensional diagram called SD2D. Then, a full-map relationship is established between SD2D and the timed automata network (TAN). Thirdly, on basis of the above mapping relationships, the model transformation approach is established, realizing the transformation from SD2D to TAN. Formal verification can be then carried out to check domain specific properties with automated model checkers like UPPAAL. Our proposed approach realizes a full-map from sequence diagram to TAN and bridges the gap between visual modeling and formal modeling of software. Experimental results show that the proposed approach of formal sequence is effective and efficient in behavior description and formal verification of software.

This work describes Modified Condition/Decision Coverage (MC/DC) criterion for performing testing of the interactions among a set of collaborating objects. This criterion is based on uml sequence diagrams. The sequences of Synchronized and Asynchronized messages in the sequence diagrams are used to define the code coverage goals for the family of criteria. In this paper, first we design an uml sequence diagram. XML produces XMI code for the designed uml sequence diagram. Next, JAXB converts the XMI code into Java code. To generate test cases using concolic testing for the Java program which is derived from the uml sequence diagram, we have used jCUTE. These test cases are then supplied to COPEPCA (COverage PErcentage CAlculator) to measure MC/DC%.

Previous studies suggest that the combination of model-based fault injection and model checking can effectively detect the dependability bottlenecks and verify the fault-tolerance capability of systems at very early phases of their lifecycles. However, a challenge of applying such techniques in the industry is that semi-formal modeling languages like uml cannot easily support automated analysis and formal verification. To address this challenge, we propose a fault injection and verification framework based on uml sequence diagrams. The idea is to create formal models from sequence diagrams as well as predefined fault models, and then run a model checker to check if specific properties are violated. With an exhaustive exploration of a system's states and fault space by the model checker, the approach ensures complete, automated reasoning on failure modes and effects. The framework also allows the designs of additional recovery actions to tolerate faults and then the verification of the updated models. The framework separates manual and automated activities, providing a guide to the practices of developers and the development of the support tool. We conduct a study on an industrial case and demonstrate that by the proposed approach, critical design flaws are revealed.

Context: The COSMIC functional size measurement method on uml diagrams has been investigated as a means to estimate the software effort early in the software development life cycle. Like other functional size measurement methods, the COSMIC method takes into account the data movements in the uml sequence diagrams for example, but does not consider the data manipulations in the control structure. This paper explores software sizing at a finer level of granularity by taking into account the structural aspect of a sequence diagram in order to quantify its structural size. These functional and structural sizes can then be used as distinct independent variables to improve effort estimation models. Objective: The objective is to design an improved measurement of the size of the uml sequence diagrams by taking into account the data manipulations represented by the structure of the sequence diagram, which will be referred to as their structural size. Method: While the design of COSMIC defines the functional size of a functional process at a high level of granularity (i.e. the data movements), the structural size of a sequence diagram is defined at a finer level of granularity: the size of the flow graph of their control structure described through the alt, opt and loop constructs. This new measurement method was designed by following the process recommended in Software Metrics and Software Metrology (Abran, 2010). Results: The size of sequence diagrams can now be measured from two perspectives, both functional and structural, and at different levels of granularity with distinct measurement units. Conclusion: It is now feasible to measure the size of functional requirements at two levels of granularity: at an abstract level, the software functional size can be measured in terms of COSMIC Function Point (CFP) units;and at a detailed level, the software structural size can be measured in terms of Control Structure Manipulation (CSM) units.
