This paper investigates the performance of different antenna array structures for hybrid massive-MIMO precoding schemes using few-bit DACs. Particularly, the proposed hybrid scheme includes two precoding stages: the RF-beamforming stage is designed via the slowly time-varying channel second-order correlation matrix, while the baseband multi-user (MU) precoding stage is constructed via the regularized zero-forcing (RZF) technique to mitigating the MU-interference. For the same system cost and complexity, we examine the achieved sum-rate and energy efficiency of various 2D antenna array structures, namely, uniform linear array (ULA), uniform rectangular array (URA), uniform circular array (UCA), and concentric circular array (CCA), in serving multiple users at different angular locations. The Monte Carlo simulation results indicate the higher achievable rate and energy efficiency of CCA by using low-resolution DACs as compared to various 2D array structures. We also show that only (3-5)-bit DACs are sufficient to provide comparable spectral and energy efficiencies.

This paper investigates the performance behaviours of various antenna array structures for hybrid massive-MIMO precoding schemes. In particular, the proposed hybrid scheme includes two cascaded stages: the RF-beamforming stage is designed via the eigen-decomposition of the massive-MIMO channel second-order correlation matrix while the baseband multi-user (MU) precoding stage is constructed via the regularized zero-forcing (RZF) technique to mitigating the MU-interference in the reduced-dimension effective MU-channel. A transfer block is introduced between the RF-beamforming and baseband precoding stages to significantly reduce the number of required RE chains. For the same number of antenna elements with half-wavelength spacing, we examine the achieved sum-rate performance of different 2D antenna array structures, namely, uniform linear array (ULA), uniform rectangular array (URA), uniform circular array (UCA), and concentric circular array (CCA), in serving multiple users in various angle-of-departure (AoD) settings. Simulation results indicate that, among the array structures, URA and CCA can offer both smaller array sizes and higher achieved sum-rate. Furthermore, for various user angular locations, the sum-rate of URA can vary about 2 bits/s/Hz while CCA can give an invariant sum-rate performance.

The term fractal refers to the fractional dimensions that have recursive nature and when clubbed with the properties of sparse arrays leads to the generation of a novel array called a sparse fractal array. In this paper, we extend our research to the 2D domain by introducing planar sparse arrays which generate hole-free difference coarray and have O(N-2) elements just like the OBA but here in the new closed box form, with the additional property of fractal arrays along with sparseness. To estimate azimuth and elevation angle we have designed planar sparse fractal arrays using nested arrays and coprime arrays as the fundamental basic generating array which helps in achieving a high degree of freedom which makes it useful for DOA estimation. Simulations show that the proposed planar arrays have the better estimation performance when compared with existing planar arrays like URA, OBA, and CPA.

In the field of direction of arrival (DOA) estimation, there exists no problem of angle merging and it has low sidelobe characteristics with the uniform rectangular array. But when sensors in the uniform rectangular array are partially damaged, the two-dimensional DOA estimation performance of the original algorithms will seriously decline, and even have a performance failure in some cases. To solve the problem, we study the inexact augmented Lagrange multiplier method (IALM). Through utilizing features of low-rank matrix, obtained by the tensor unfolding in different modes, in the tensor model of the received signal, we propose the IALM-ESPRIT algorithm. Compared with the direct ESPRIT algorithm, the performance of two-dimensional DOA estimation is significantly improved when partial sensors damaged.

Detection of the Number of Signals in uniform arrays by Invariant-Signal-Subspace Matching

We present a novel and computationally simple solution to the problem of detecting the number of signals in the case of uniform linear arrays (ULA) and uniform rectangular arrays (URA), which is applicable to white and colored noise, and to a very small number of samples. The solution is based on novel and non-asymptotic goodness-of-fit metric, referred invariant signal subspace matching (ISSM), which is aimed at matching the signal subspaces of two subarrays which are translation invariant. We form a pair of projection matrices on the signal subspaces - one for each subarray - which are parameterized by the number of signals k and constructed from the k leading eigenvectors of the sample-covariance matrices of the subarrays. The value of k which minimizes this metric is selected as the number of signals. We prove the consistency of the ISSM criterion for the high signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) limit, and also for the large-sample limit, conditioned on the noise being white. The evaluation of the ISSM criterion involves only the computation of eigenvectors of the sample-covariance matrix of the the array. Simulation results, demonstrating the improved performance of the ISSM criterion over existing criteria, especially for colored noise, are included.

Hybrid virtual polarimetric massive MIMO measurements at 1.35 GHz

The polarimetric massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radio channel of an indoor line-of-sight scenario is investigated at 1.35 GHz using a real-time radio channel sounder. The 8 x 12 massive MIMO transmitter is constructed using a hybrid architecture including a vertical uniform linear array translated at different horizontal positions forming a virtual, yet realistic, uniform rectangular array. The performance of the system is evaluated with six users distributed in the room for different polarisation schemes and receiver orientations using propagation channel-based metrics (such as receiver spatial correlation and Rician factor) and system-oriented metrics such as sum-rate capacity and signal to interference and noise ratio. The results show a clear dependence of the performance to the polarisation schemes and receiver orientation and showing that when facing the array, cross-polarisation can be very beneficial. Furthermore, it is concluded that the additional degree of freedom brought by the polarisation diversity can contribute to improve spectral efficiency (similar to 20% depending on the configuration), paving the way for further capacity enhancements in massive MIMO systems. It was also found that the receiver spatial correlation can be modelled using a Burr distribution.

Beamforming with 2D-AOA estimation for pilot contamination reduction in massive MIMO

The upcoming fifth-generation wireless mobile systems are projected to be commercialized in the year 2020 and are set to play the main role in massive multiple input-multiple output (mMIMO) integrated with the technologies of beamforming antenna arrays. However, the performance of mMIMO is constrained by inter-cell interference from adjacent cells triggered by the reused pilot, an issue termed pilot contamination. To address this issue, this paper focuses on mitigating pilot contamination by implementing a suboptimal spatial source detection method based on the beamforming approach using a two-dimension-unitary estimation of the signal parameters through rotational invariance techniques algorithm. We jointly used 2D-AOA information (azimuth and elevation angles) and statistical channel estimations at the BSs to identify the channels correlation condition and evaluate the sum rate performance of users based on AOA. The detected signals from the uniform rectangular array are used to segregate the required signal from the interfering signal without any change to the pilot construction of the training signals. The performance of the minimum mean squared error beamforming (MMSE-beamforming) technique in the multi-cell mMIMO system of the aforementioned method is numerically evaluated and then compared with conventional methods that depend only on pilot identity information. The simulation reveals that the achievable sum rate gains of 2D-AOA and the pilot identity information techniques (best case) with respect to deterministic MMSE are 96.3% and 85.4%, respectively, thus showing the prospect of eliminating the majority of pilot contamination using the 2D-AOA estimation.

Construction of Golay Complementary Matrices and Its Applications to MIMO Omnidirectional Transmission

Golay complementary sequences (GCS) have found wide applications in radar and communications thanks to their prominent property of complementary autocorrelation. This paper studies the extension of Golay complementary sequences to Golay complementary matrices (GCM), i.e, a pair of matrices whose two-dimensional autocorrelations add to be a two-dimensional delta-function. While the construction of (real) binary GCM are available in the literature, how to construct the quaternary GCM (and the more general unimodular GCM) remains unknown. We put together this missing piece, and show the feasible size that allows for binary and quaternary GCM. The feasible sizes can be further expanded if the phases of the matrices' entries can be arbitrary. In addition, we consider the extension of the GCM to the set of N (N >= 2) matrices, whose two-dimensional autocorrelations add to be a two-dimensional d-function, which we refer to as autocorrelation complementary matrices (ACM). For N = 4, the ACM allows for matrices of arbitrary size. The GCM/ACM can be applied to omnidirectional transmission for a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) communication system with a uniform rectangular array (URA), which is useful for broadcasting cell-wide common messages. We propose two schemes for omnidirectional transmission, one is based on space-time block code (STBC) and the other is based on the dual cross-polarization of the antenna array. Both schemes can be implemented in the radio frequency (RF) analog domain, generating (theoretically) perfect omnidirectional beampattern with low hardware cost.

Estimation of two-dimensional direction-of-arrival for uncorrelated and coherent signals with low complexity

In this study, a low complexity two-dimensional direction-of-arrival (2-D DOA) estimation method is proposed with uniform rectangular array (URA) when uncorrelated and coherent signals coexist. By using a new method of modified estimation of signal parameters via rotation invariance techniques (ESPRIT), the DOAs of uncorrelated signals are first estimated. Afterwards, the contributions of uncorrelated signals are eliminated, and then a new Toeplitz matrix without the information of uncorrelated signals is constructed. Using the product of the Toeplitz matrix and its conjugate transpose matrix, the remaining coherent signals can be resolved. With the two-step processing, the proposed method can resolve more signals with low computational complexity. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method. The Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) for this signal scenario is also derived.

A Receive Beamforming Technique for a Mobile Station with Multiple Antenna arrays in Mm-Wave Cellular Communications

In this paper, two receive beamforming techniques (Method 1 and Method 2) are proposed for a mobile station (MS) with multiple antenna arrays in an OFDM-based millimeter-wave (mm-wave) cellular communication system. Since the MS in mm-wave cellular communication requires fast processing due to its frequent movement and rotation, a receive beamforming technique with reduced computation complexity and processing time is proposed in Method 2. Of particular interest, estimation techniques for 2-dimensional (2D) direction-of-arrivals (DoAs) corresponding to each cell ID are proposed for uniform circular arrays (UCAs) and uniform rectangular arrays (URAs). Also, a cell selection technique for MSs with multiple antenna arrays is described that use the candidate cell IDs and parameters estimated for all antenna arrays to provide combining gain in addition to array gain in multipath channels. The proposed beamforming techniques are evaluated by computer simulation using a simple model of a mm-wave cellular communication system with 3-dimensional spatial channel model (3D SCM).
