The massive development of intermittent renewable energy technologies in power systems affects the operation of electrical systems. Due to technical limitations and investments needed to maintain the current electrical security level, issues related to dispatching, static and dynamic stability could stop the development of these distributed renewable energy sources (RES). The subject of the PhD is to develop a tool to study the uncertainties of PV power and load forecasting in an urban network. With stochastic methods, the day-ahead operating reserve (OR) is quantified by taking into account an associated reliability risk index. Then the OR is dispatched into different power generators (active PV generators and micro gas turbines). To minimize the microgrid total operational cost and/or equivalent CO 2 emissions, day-ahead optimal operational planning and dispatching of the OR into different power generators is implemented. Finally, a freeware "A User-friendly Energy Management System and Operational Planning Supervisor" is developed on the Matlab GUI to conceptualize the overall system operation.

We consider integer linear programs whose solutions are binary matrices and whose (sub-)symmetry groups are symmetric groups acting on (sub-)columns. We propose a framework to build (sub-)symmetry-breaking inequalities for such programs, by introducing one additional variable per sub-symmetry group considered. The proposed framework is applied to derive inequalities breaking both symmetries and sub-symmetries in the graph coloring problem and in the ramp constrained min-up/min-down unit commitment problem.

The discrete unit commitment problem with min-stop ramping constraints optimizes the daily production of thermal power plants. For this problem, compact Integer Linear Programming (ILP) formulations have been designed to solve exactly small instances and heuristically real-size instances. This paper investigates whether Dantzig-Wolfe reformulation allows to improve the previous exact method and matheuristics. The extended ILP formulation is presented with the column generation algorithm to solve its linear relaxation. The experimental results show that the Dantzig-Wolfe reformulation does not improve the quality of the linear relaxation of the tightest compact ILP formulations. Computational experiments suggest also a conjecture which would explain such result: the compact ILP formulation of min-stop ramping constraints would be tight. Such results validate the quality of the exact methods and matheuristics based on compact ILP formulations previously designed. The scheduling of the generating units is a very important issue in the power system operation, which is defined as unit commitment problem (UCP). The aim of the UCP scheduling to minimize the total generation costs with satisfying the power demand, spinning reserve, ramp rate and other operation constraints. In this paper, a proposed procedure binary Sine Cosine (BSC) optimization technique with optimal priority list (OPL) algorithm is introduced to procedure solves UCP. The proposed procedure is achieved through two stages;the first stage aims to shrunk search space by introducing optimal priority list (OPL), while the second stage adopts the BSC optimization technique to find the optimal solution of UCP, by accelerating the search process of BSC optimization technique. The different types of priority lists are introduced with binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO) technique then these results are comprised to find the optimal binary result, a lowest cost and OPL. The procedure proposed is applied to IEEE test system. The results of these algorithms are compared to show the capability and efficiently of the optimal algorithm. Based on the obtained results, it can be concluding that, the proposed procedure gives the best results and saves the computational efforts.

Renewable energy sources (RES) are a promising low operating cost solution for utilities. Moreover, RES are environmental attentive solution since, it provides low carbon emissions. However, RES have several associated challenges such as its intermittence nature and the form of generated power. The unpredicted RES output power is a significant challenge for power system schedulers and operators. Many researches have proposed a few solutions to maximize the benefit of utilizing RES in the power network and reduce the negative operational impacts. In this paper, a solution of economic dispatch and unit commitment problem which includes conventional and RES is proposed. The IEEE 14 Bus system is used to model, investigate and validate the proposed solution. Four different scenarios that consider the integration of RES have been evaluated toward the minimum operation cost using a two-stage differential evolution algorithm. The first scenario considers the operation cost of the power system that has only conventional generators. While the second and third scenarios have considered the power system operation costs when replacing one of the conventional generators by photovoltaic (PV) and wind turbine (WT) plants, respectively. The last, scenario is a hybrid case that considers the integration of one PV plant and one WT farm instead of two conventional generators. The study outcomes show that the one-day operation cost of the hybrid scenario is the most expensive one. Whereas the one-day operation cost of the third scenario has the minimum operation cost over all other scenarios.

The unit commitment problem (UCP) is one of the key and fundamental concerns in the operation, monitoring, and control of power systems. Uncertainty management in a UCP has been of great interest to both operators and researchers. The uncertainties that are considered in a UCP can be classified as technical (outages, forecast errors, and plugin electric vehicle (PEV) penetration), economic (electricity prices), and "epidemics, pandemics, and disasters " (techno-socio-economic). Various methods have been developed to model the uncertainties of these parameters, such as stochastic programming, probabilistic methods, chance-constrained programming (CCP), robust optimization, risk-based optimization, the hierarchical scheduling strategy, and information gap decision theory. This paper reviews methods of uncertainty management, parameter modeling, simulation tools, and test systems.

Assessment of the required running capacity in weakly interconnected insular power systems

In this paper a methodology is proposed for assessing the required running capacity in weakly interconnected insular power systems. This information is of crucial importance for system operators, when deciding the operation policy of the interconnected power system. In the proposed methodology, a probabilistic analysis is initially employed to identify probable extreme stress conditions of the local oil-fired units of the insular power system and the interconnector. Then, based on the unit commitment guidelines and the technical limitations of the interconnector, a power flow analysis is proposed to be followed. Hence, useful insights can be obtained for the system operators, regarding the required running capacity and the interconnection operation. To validate the proposed methodology's efficacy, the case of the interconnection of Crete with the Hellenic Transmission System is considered. The presented case study follows the recently proposed guidelines for unit commitment in the power system of Crete following to the interconnection, while considering the extreme scenarios derived from the probabilistic analysis. The existing oil-fired units that will be required to remain available for dispatching after the operation of the AC interconnector are identified, while the interconnection operation is characterized.

This paper proposes a box expanding method to reduce the economic dispatch (ED) cost in the box-based robust unit commitment model (BUC). As a non-anticipative robust unit commitment model for a power system under demand uncertainty, BUC co-optimizes the commitment schedule and the feasible set of the ED problem to minimize the total operating cost for the worst-case realization in a set of possible demand scenarios; the feasible set of the ED problem is modeled as a box to enable the non-anticipative real-time dispatch. Meanwhile, as BUC considers the worst-case total operating cost, the actual total operating cost may be unnecessarily high. In this paper, the box feasible set of the ED problem in BUC is expanded to a larger one via multi-objective optimization with a no-preference method. The expanded box forms a new feasible set of the ED problem, which increases the chance of reducing the actual ED cost and thus the actual total operating cost. Simulation results using 5-, 14-, and 30-bus test systems demonstrate the effectiveness and generality of the proposed method.

The spinning reserve constraint presents a significant challenge in smaller power *** is common to have the reserve required specified at multiple times following a contingency. In this paper some operating modes of a pumped storage unit designed to provide reserve are described. A novel neural network technique for the unit commitment problem is also presented. This technique is ideally suited to consider all the operating modes of a pumped storage unit. Results illustrate the circumstances in which the various pumped storage modes may be useful.

Liquid Air Energy Storage Model for Scheduling Purposes in Island Power Systems

Moving towards clean energy generation seems essential. To do so, renewable energy penetration is growing in the power systems. Although energy sources such as wind and solar are clean, they are not available consistently. Using energy storage will help to tackle variability. Liquid air energy storage is gaining attention among different energy storage technologies, as it is a promising option for grid-scale energy storage. This paper presents a detailed mixed integer linear model of liquid air energy storage to be used in scheduling and planning problems. A comprehensive cycle diagram of different processes of liquid air energy storage is presented, and a model has been developed accordingly. Simulations of the proposed model are carried out for the power system of Tenerife island and compared with the basic models. Basic models overlook specific characteristics of liquid air energy storage systems, such as charging and discharging start energy. Results confirm that the use of simple models will lead to misleading conclusions and overestimate the economic benefits of liquid air energy storage.
