As a wide variety of interaction devices, modalities has to be supported by user interface developers, model-based user interface development gets increasing attention. Especially if context- and user-awareness comes into play, handcrafting a user interface is rendered almost impossible. In model-based user interface development, usually several models are applied to describe different aspects of the user interface or to provide a varying level of detail. The relations between the models representing those levels of abstractions are established through transformations, a concept which is also applied in software engineering with the Model Driven Architecture (MDA). In this paper we will review several transformation systems and discuss their applicability for model-based user interface development.

Effective moderation is a crucial factor for successful synchronous discussions. The importance of moderation is even higher in technology-mediated and distributed e-discussions. Additional indirection of communication and reduced expressive density, such as limited gestures, mimics or intonation, require special effort to reduce the risk of potential discussion problems such as miscommunication or lack of involvement. Useful group sizes for Computer Supported Cooperative Learning (CSCL) applications may vary, depending on tools and communication channels involved. In many synchronous e-discussion forms, the ideal group size is small, often smaller than the typical size of a class. In these and other situations, parallel work in smaller groups can be considered for classroom use of CSCL. Due to their co-location requirement, traditional direct discussions naturally limited moderators to observe one discussion at a time. Means of telecommunication eliminate this limitation - from a technical point of view, a moderator could observe multiple discussions simultaneously. However, the task of simultaneous moderation turns out to be a cognitively challenging task. Without assistance, moderators are easily overstrained, resulting in mediocre or poor moderation performance - and hence, in mediocre or failing discussions. Parallel moderation not only requires moderation to be effective, but also to be efficient. Within the Argunaut(1) project, a dedicated system for moderation assistance was built, suitable for both single and multiple simultaneous discussions. This paper describes the system's user interface for moderators. It focuses on the translation of simultaneous moderation challenges into an appropriate user interface and on insights gained in the design-driven development process and from user involvement during the development of the system. In this paper, we describe MANTRA(1), a model-driven approach to the development of multiple consistent user interfaces for one application. The common essence of these user interfaces is captured in an abstract UI model (AUI) which is annotated with constraints to the dialogue flow. We consider in particular how the user interface can be adapted on the AUI level by deriving and tailoring dialogue structures which take into account constraints imposed by front-end platforms or inexperienced users. With this input we use model transformations described in ATL (Atlas Transformation Language) to derive concrete, platform-specific UI models (CUI). These can be used to generate implementation code for several UI platforms including GUI applications, dynamic web sites and mobile applications. The generated user interfaces are integrated with a multi tier application by referencing WSDL-based interface descriptions and communicating with the application core over web service protocols.

The increasing number of devices available for each person allows to create unconventional interfaces that coordinate more than one device for supporting the interaction. In this paper, we introduce a framework for designing distributable web applications, which supports moving and sharing the different parts of a user interface across different devices. We depict the architectural solution and we introduce a set of distribution patterns. In addition, we describe a concrete application of the framework for a distributable video player application.

In this paper, we introduce the MVIC pattern for creating multidevice and multimodal interfaces. We discuss the advantages provided by introducing a new component to the MVC pattern for those interfaces which must adapt to different devices and modalities. The proposed solution is based on an input model defining equivalent and complementary sequence of inputs for the same interaction. In addition, we discuss Djestit, a javascript library which allows creating multidevice and multimodal input models for web applications, applying the aforementioned pattern. The library supports the integration of multiple devices (Kinect 2, Leap Motion, touchscreens) and different modalities (gestural, vocal and touch).

The following paper deals with quality properties that extend the traditional understanding of usability with its focus on the pragmatic aspects like efficiency and effectiveness on task performance in the context of business applications. The contribution of the approach is tow folded. First: We show how psychological theories about motivation and creativity can bridge the gap between business goals and users' goals and attitude with interaction design. We introduce an engineering approach that allows to deliberately design for fun/joy in a given business context. Second: We show how to reuse the experience from former or other projects by describing the interaction design as pattern candidates. This approach has been applied successfully many times and we elaborate it in a case study conducted for one of our clients, including an empirical evaluation that shows an improved working behavior and increased user acceptance of the software.

We explore the possibility of including Delta-Oriented Programming (DOP) and Abstract user interface (AUI) model during product generation in Software Product Line engineering (SPLE). Previous work showed that DOP is applicable in a SPLE for Web applications albeit user interface (UI) elements in derived product are still manually created without UI modeling. AUI model is proven to be successful for modeling UI elements for products in SPLE as it can model generic UI elements while still encouraging customization. Therefore, we pick an existing AUI modeling language called Interaction Flow Modeling Language (IFML) to create model of UI elements in a SPLE. We also suggest a new SPLE design that follows DOP and the proposed UI modeling language to generate adaptable UI given product configuration. The process of designing UI for each feature in the product line is based on reference implementation process used in previous work. We hope that the suggested process can solve the current DOP practices limitation in generating UI elements for products in SPLE.
