This paper defines an approach to maintain the work of business process analysts aligned with the work of UI designers. With this approach, models are derived from each other and aligned in order to more efficiently propagate changes when needed In this way, each model modification could be adequately propagated in the rest of the chain. By applying this model-driven approach, the user interfaces of the information systems are abstracted from models and their interrelationships, thus directly meeting the requirements of the business processes. This approach has been validated on a case study in a large bank-insurance organization and with the implementation of a traceability tool.

A user interface description language (UIDL) consists of a specification language that describes various aspects of a user interface under development. A comparative review of some selected user interface description languages is produced in order to analyze how they support the various stages of user interface development life cycle and development goals, such as support for multi-platform, device-independence, modality independence, and content delivery. There has been a long history and tradition to attempt capturing the essence of user interfaces at various levels of abstraction for different purposes, including those of development. The recent return of this effort today gains more attraction, along with the dissemination of XML markup languages, and gives birth to many proposals for various user interface description languages. Consequently, an in-depth analysis of the salient features that make these languages different from each other is desired in order to identify when and where they are appropriate for a specific purpose. The review is conducted based on a systematic analysis grid and some user interfaces implemented with these languages.

Task modeling has become one of the cornerstones of model-based user interface design. In this paper, a task-based approach to user interfaces design is introduced. This approach is supported by a tool, namely IDEALXML, that allows for the animation of the specified user interfaces to generate a hi-fi prototype of the future user interface while still in the first development stages.

This paper introduces a software tool for rapid prototyping of interactive systems whose user interfaces could be distributed according to four axes defined in a design space: type of computing platform, amount of interaction surfaces, type of interaction surface, and type of user interface. This software is based on a virtual toolkit for rendering the user interfaces in a virtual world depicting the real world in which the distribution occurs. The virtual toolkit consists of a layer for rendering a concrete user interface specified in a user interface description language. This paper presents its extension to modeling the external environment in terms of the design space so as to render the context of use in which the user interfaces are distributed. For each axis, a pair of functions enables exploring the axis in decreasing and increasing order so as to explore various situations of distribution, axis by axis, or in a combined way. As the interfaces resulting from this rendering are truly executable ones, this system provides designers with an acceptable means for generating ideas about how a user interface can be distributed in a context of use, and helps to evaluate the quality of a solution at an early design stage. Four representative situations located on the design space are implemented and discussed: distribution in a multi-platform context, distribution of the workplace, ubiquitous computing, and ambient intelligence, thus proving the coverage of the design space and the capabilities of the whole system.

This paper defines a model-driven approach for organizational engineering in which user interfaces of information systems are derived from business processes. This approach consists of four steps: business process modeling in the context of organizational engineering, task model derivation from the business process model, task refinement, and user interface model derivation from the task model. Each step contributes to specify and refine mappings between the source and the target model. In this way, each model modification could be adequately propagated in the rest of the chain. By applying this model-driven approach, the user interfaces of the information systems are directly meeting the requirements of the business processes and are no longer decoupled from them. This approach has been validated on a case study in a large bank-insurance company.

In this paper, we describe the COMETS Inspector, a software tool providing user interface designers and developers with a semantic network in order to control the plasticity of their user interfaces (UI) at run-time. Thanks to a set of predefined relationships, the semantic network links together various concepts ranging from the final UI (i.e., the UI described in terms of technological spaces) to the concrete and abstract UIs (i.e., the UI respectively described in terms of concrete interaction objects independently of any technological space, and abstract individual components and containers independently of any interaction modality) up to the tasks and concepts of the interactive system. In this way, plasticity can be addressed at four levels of abstraction (task and concepts, abstract, concrete, and final user interface) for forward, reverse, and lateral engineering. The end user exploits the semantic network at run time to adapt his/her UI to another context of use by identifying, selecting, and applying plasticity suitable operations.

In ubiquitous computing, interactive applications are shipped with different variations of its user interface depending on the constraints imposed by the context in which they are running, such as the user, the computing platform and environment. A multi-presentation user interface is composed of a series of interconnected user interfaces for the same task to be carried out in different contexts of use. When access to software applications must be guaranteed in more than one context of use, it is necessary to automatically adapt the interface in order to preserve their usability when context switching occurs, for instance, a switch from a desktop to a pocket computer. To achieve this goal, this paper proposes a model and a visualization technique to express and manipulate the plasticity domains of a multi-presentation user interface. The plasticity domain denotes the set of contexts of use it is able to cover while preserving its usability. This paper focuses primarily on one aspect of the context of use: the computing platform and its screen size: when the dimensions of a graphical user interface change, the multipresentation interface automatically switches to the presentation which is the most adapted to this screen. The model supports the definition of this plasticity domain in terms of window size and location. The visualization technique helps in both making observable the set of presentations that fit the available space, and perceiving which operations could help in switching from one presentation to another one. The model has been integrated into a user interface description language and is supported by an intelligent editor, because it infers from plasticity domains all the constraints and conditions required for context switching.
