Multimodal interfaces represents an emerging interdisciplinary research direction and has become one of the frontiers in computer Science. Multimodal interfaces aim at efficient, convenient and natural interaction and communication between computers (in their broadest sense) and humanusers. They will ultimately enable users to interact with computers using their everyday skills. These proceedings include the papers accepted for presentation at the Third International Conference on Multimodal interfaces (ICMI 2000) held in Beijing, China on 1416 O ctober 2000. The papers were selected from 172 contributions submitted worldwide. Each paper was allocated for review to three members of the Program Committee, which consisted of more than 40 leading researchers in the field. Final decisions of 38 oral papers and 48 poster papers were made based on the reviewers’ comments and the desire for a balance of topics. The decision to have a single track conference led to a competitive selection process and it is very likely that some good submissions are not included in this volume. The papers collected here cover a wide range of topics such as affective and perceptual computing, interfaces for wearable and mobile computing, gestures and sign languages, face and facial expression analysis, multilingual interfaces, virtual and augmented reality, speech and handwriting, multimodal integration and application systems. They represent some of the latest progress in multimodal interfaces research.

This volume brings together the invited papers and selected participants’ contributions presented at the COST 2102 International Workshop on “Verbal and Nonverbal Communication Behaviours”, held in Vietri sul Mare, Italy, March 29–31, 2007. The workshop was jointly organized by the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Psychology of the Second University of Naples, Caserta, Italy, and the International Institute for Advanced Scientific Studies “Eduardo R. Caianiello”(IIASS), Vietri sul Mare, Italy. The workshop was a COST 2102 event, and it was mainly sponsored by the COST (European Cooperation in the Field of Scientific and Technical Research) Action 2102 in the domain of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), as well as by the above-mentioned organizing Institutions. The main theme of the workshop was to discuss the fundamentals of verbal and nonverbal communication features and their relationships with the identification of a person, his/her socio-cultural background and personal traits. In the past decade, a number of different research communities within the psychological and computational sciences have tried to characterize human behaviour in face-to-face communication by several features that describe relationships between facial, prosodic/voice quality, formal and informal communication modes, cultural differences, individual and socio-cultural variations, stable personality traits and degrees of expressiveness and emphasis, as well as the individuation of the interlocutor’s emotional and psychological states.

Engineering Interactive Systems (EIS) 2008 was an international event combining the 2nd working conference on human-Centred Software Engineering (HCSE 2008) and the 7th International Workshop on TAsk MOdels and DIAgrams (TAMODIA 2008). HCSE is a working conference that brings together researchers and practitioners - terested in strengthening the scientific foundations of user interface design and examining the relationship between software engineering and human-computerinteraction and how to strengthen user-centred design as an essential part of so- ware engineering processes. As a working conference, substantial time is devoted to the open and lively discussion of papers. TAMODIA is an international workshop on models, such as task models and visual representations in human-computerinteraction (one of the most widely used notations in this area, ConcurTaskTrees, was developed in the town that hosted this year’s event). It focuses on notations used to describe user tasks ranging from textual and graphical forms to interactive, multimodal and multimedia tools.

The 2010 Pacific-Rim Conference on Multimedia (PCM 2010) was held in Shanghai at Fudan University, during September 21–24, 2010. Since its inauguration in 2000, PCM has been held in various places around the Pacific Rim, namely Sydney (PCM 2000), Beijing (PCM 2001), Hsinchu (PCM 2002), Singapore (PCM 2003), Tokyo (PCM 2004), Jeju (PCM 2005), Zhejiang (PCM 2006), Hong Kong (PCM 2007), Tainan (PCM 2008), and Bangkok (PCM 2009). PCM is a major annual international conference organized as a forum for the dissemination of state-of-the-art technological advances and research results in the fields of theoretical, experimental, and applied multimedia analysis and processing. PCM 2010 featured a comprehensive technical program which included 75 oral and 56 poster presentations selected from 261 submissions from Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Korea, Myanmar, Norway, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, the UK, and the USA. Three distinguished researchers, Prof. Zhi-Hua Zhou from Nanjing University, Dr. Yong Rui from Microsoft, and Dr. Tie-Yan Liu from Microsoft Research Asia delivered three keynote talks to the conference. We are very grateful to the many people who helped to make this conference a s- cess. We would like to especially thank Hong Lu for local organization, Qi Zhang for handling the publication of the proceedings, and Cheng Jin for looking after the c- ference website and publicity. We thank Fei Wu for organizing the special session on large-scale multimedia search in the social network settings.
