This work summarizes the theoretical and algorithmic basis of optimized pr- abilistic advising. It developed from a series of targeted research projects s- ported both by the European Commission and Czech grant bodies. The source text has served as a common basis of communication for the research team. When accumulating and re?ning the material we found that the text could also serve as • a grand example of the strength of dynamic Bayesian decision making, • a practical demonstration that computational aspects do matter, • a reference to ready particular solutions in learning and optimization of decision-making strategies, • a source of open and challenging problems for postgraduate students, young as well as experienced researchers, • a departure point for a further systematic development of advanced op- mized advisory systems, for instance, in multiple participant setting. Semiotic engineering was originally proposed as a semiotic approach to designing user interface languages. Over the years, with research done at the Department of Informatics of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, it evolved into a semiotic theory of human-computerinteraction (HCI). It views HCI as computer-mediated communication between designers and users at interaction time. The system speaks for its designers in various types of conversations specified at design time. These conversations communicate the designers' understanding of who the users are, what they know the users want or need to do, in which preferred ways, and why. The designers' message to users includes even the interactive language in which users will have to communicate back with the system in order to achieve their specific goals. Hence, the process is, in fact, one of communication about communication, or metacommunication. Semiotic engineering has two methods to evaluate the quality of metacommunication in HCI: the semiotic inspection method (SIM) and the communicability evaluation method (CEM). Up to now, they have been mainly used and discussed in technical contexts, focusing on how to detect problems and how to improve the metacommunication of specific systems. In this book, Clarisse de Souza and Carla Leitão discuss how SIM and CEM, which are both qualitative methods, can also be used in scientific contexts to generate new knowledge about HCI. The discussion goes into deep considerations about scientific methodology, calling the reader's attention to the essence of qualitative methods in research and the kinds of results they can produce. To illustrate their points, the authors present an extensive case study with a free open-source digital audio editor called Audacity. With the increased complexity of organizational decision making, projected demand for computer simulation-based decisional aids is on the rise. The objective of this book is to enhance systematically our understanding of and gain insights into the general process by which human facilitated ILEs are effectively designed and used in improving users’ decision making in dynamic tasks. This book is divided into four major parts. Part I serves as an introduction to the subject of “decision making in dynamic tasks”, its importance and its complexity. Part II provides background material, drawing upon the relevant literature, for the development of an integrated process model on the effectiveness of human facilitated ILEs in improving decision making in dynamic tasks. Fifteen years after the publication of Weiser’s seminal paper in Scientific American, ubiquitous computing is a large, thriving field of academic research and commercial innovation. The proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Ubiquitous C- puting reflect the strength, diversity and vigor of the research program that Weiser initiated. We hope that you will find much in the papers contained herein to stimulate new and exciting work as we reach forward toward ubiquitous computing together. The location of the conference, in Orange County, California, was particularly - posite given recent directions in the field. A Pacific Rim location linked the conf- ence to last year’s venue in Tokyo, Japan, and provided an appropriate space to reflect on the different implementations and visions of ubiquitous computing in d- ferent parts of the world. Two significant elements of local industry – the software industry and the entertainment industry – reflect concerns heavily represented in - cent research in ubiquitous computing, with mobile and ubiquitous gaming, for - stance, an obvious link. The unique metropolitan setting of the Los Angeles region provided a useful setting in which to develop research agendas in urban computing.
