The ongoing migration of computing and information access from the desktop and te- phone to mobile computing devices such as PDAs, tablet PCs, and next-generation (3G) phones poses critical challenges for research on information access. Desktop computerusers are now used to accessing vast quantities of complex data either directly on their PC or via the Internet – with many services now blurring that distinction. The current state-of-practice of mobile computing devices, be they mobile phones, hand-held computers, or personal digital assistants (PDAs), is very variable. Most mobile phones have no or very limited information storage and very poor Internet access. Furthermore, very few end-users make any, never mind extensive, use of the services that are provided. Hand-held computers, on the other hand, tend to have no wireless network capabilities and tend to be used very much as electronic diaries, with users tending not to go beyond basic diary applications.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International Workshop on Ambient Assisted Living, IWAAL 2011, held in Torremolinos-Málaga, Spain, in June 2011 as a satellite event of IWANN 2011, the International Work-Conference on Artificial and Natural Neural Networks.. The 30 papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. They are organized in topical sections on mobile proposals for AAL, applications for cognitive impairments, e-health, smart and wireless sensors, applied technologies, frameworks and platforms, and methodologies and brain interfaces.

Since its establishment in 1995, the ERCIM Working Group “userinterfaces for 1 All” (WG UI4ALL) has systematically promoted the proactive realization of the design for all principles in HCI. Its activities have included the organization of a se- 2 ries of very successful workshops that have contributed to consolidate recent work and stimulate further discussion on the state of the art in userinterfaces for all and its increasing range of applications in the upcoming Information Society. Such wo- shops have brought together, in a new scientific community, researchers and teams working not only in the different ERCIM organizations, but also in organizations beyond ERCIM and the European boundaries, who share common interests and as- rations and contribute to the endeavors towards making the Information Society equally accessible to all citizens. This volume contains the proceedings of the last ERCIM “userinterfaces for All” Workshop. The work of the ERCIM WG UI4ALL led in 2001 to the establishment of the - ternational Conference on Universal Access in human–computerinteraction 3 (UAHCI) , which takes place in the context of the HCI International Conference se- 4 ries . UAHCI has established an international forum for the dissemination and - change of scientific information on theoretical, methodological and empirical research that addresses all issues related to the attainment of universal access in the devel- ment of interactive software, attracting participants from a broad range of disciplines and fields of expertise.

Dear Reader! Welcome to the proceedings of the First International Conference on Intelligent humancomputerinteraction (IHCI 2009) organized by the Indian Institute of Information Technology Allahabad. This is the first International Conference focused on humancomputerinteraction being organized in India. There is an increased interest in the human factors issues of computer use with a number of systems. The conference aims to provide an excellent opportunity for the dissemination of interesting new research, discussion about them and the generation of new ideas in these areas. We planned to organize the conference around the following five tracks: Signal and Vision Processing Language Processing Cognitive modeling Sensors and Embedded systems for HCI Graphics, Animation and Gaming Graphics, Animation and Gaming, Signal and Vision Processing, Language Processing and Cognitive modeling attracted due attention in the conference program. Very few papers were submitted in Sensors and Embedded systems and Graphics and Animation. Language is the primary means of communication between humans though usually neglected from HCI perspective. It will be better if human-computerinteraction can be done in the same model as human-human communication. This was the main motivation behind including Language Processing as a separate track in the conference. However, some of the papers could not really achieve the application aspect from the HCI perspective. We will improve on this point in the next conference.
