India has numerous official dialects, and spoken-language technology development is a burgeoning area. In fact TTS and ASR taken together constitute the most important technology for empowering people. As such, the book describes time domain representation in such a way that it can be easily and seamlessly incorporated into ASR and TTS research and development. In short, it is a valuable guidebook for the development of ASR and TTS in all the Indian Standard Dialects using signal domain parameters.

This book discusses the design of the new mobility assistive information and communication technologies (ICT) devices for the visually impaired. The book begins with a definition of the space concept, followed by the concept of interaction with a space during mobility and this interaction characteristics. The contributors will then examine the neuro-cognitive basis of space perception for mobility and different theories of space perception. The text presents the existing technologies for space perception (sense recovery with stem and iPS cells, implants, brain plasticity, sensory substitution devices, multi modal technologies, etc.), the newest technologies for mobility assistance design, the way the feedback on environment is conveyed to the end-user. Methods for formative and summative evaluations of the mobility devices will also be discussed. The book concludes with a look to the future trends in research and technology development for mobility assistive information and communication technologies.

People make use of software applications in their activities, applying them as tools in carrying out tasks. That this use should be good for people--easy, effective, efficient, and enjoyable--is a principal goal of design. In this book, we present the notion of Conceptual Models, and argue that Conceptual Models are core to achieving good design. From years of helping companies create software applications, we have come to believe that building applications without Conceptual Models is just asking for designs that will be confusing and difficult to learn, remember, and use. We show how Conceptual Models are the central link between the elements involved in application use: people's tasks (task domains), the use of tools to perform the tasks, the conceptual structure of those tools, the presentation of the conceptual model (i.e., the user interface), the language used to describe it, its implementation, and the learning that people must do to use the application. We further show that putting a Conceptual Model at the center of the design and development process can pay rich dividends: designs that are simpler and mesh better with users' tasks, avoidance of unnecessary features, easier documentation, faster development, improved customer uptake, and decreased need for training and customer support. Table of Contents: Using Tools / Start with the Conceptual Model / Definition / Structure / Example / Essential Modeling / Optional Modeling / Process / Value / Epilogue

The Ubiquitous Computing conference series provides the premier forum in which to present original research results in all areas relating to the design, implementation, app- cation and evaluation of ubiquitous computing technologies. It is a well-established platform to introduce and discuss research that enables new capabilities, appropriate security and privacy, improved user experiences and simplified and powerful devel- ment and deployment practices. These proceedings contain the papers presented at the Ninth International Conf- ence on Ubiquitous Computing (UbiComp 2007) in Innsbruck, Austria, in September 2007. Our call for papers resulted in 150 submissions, each of which was assigned to a primary and a secondary member of our Program Committee. Every primary and secondary member was responsible for assigning one or more additional qualified reviewers with specific expertise in the field. After double-blind reviews and an online discussion, we had a two-day face-to-face meeting with 38 of the 40 Program C- mittee members attending the PC meeting held just before the Pervasive 2007 conf- ence in Toronto, Canada, in May 2007. We are grateful to Khai Truong , Jeremy Knight and Alex Varshavsky of the University of Toronto for providing facilities and support for this meeting. At the PC meeting, about 80 of the submissions were in- vidually and extensively discussed in one of the three subgroups sensors, experiences and systems as well as in the calibration and decision panels. The PC finally selected 29 papers for publication in these proceedings.

This book explores how our lives and social interactions have become split between two intertwined, but not integrated, realities: the physical and the digital. Our sense of presence in the here and now has become fragmented, and yet earlier design approaches reinforced the problem, rather than leading to improvements. The authors address these issues by laying out a new humancomputerinteraction (HCI) design approach – human-experiential design – rooted in a return to first principles of how people understand the world, both consciously and unconsciously. The application of this approach to the design of blended reality spaces is described in detail. Examples and scenarios of designing them to overcome the problems inherent in a variety of mixed reality settings are provided.;will appeal to undergraduate and graduate students and researchers in interaction design, psychology, HCI and computer application studies, as well as practicing interaction designers and computer professionals. It will also be of interest to communication, media and urban design students, and to all readers with an interest in the technology-mediated future.
