People are becoming increasingly comfortable using Digital Assistants (DAs) to interact with services or connected objects. However, for non-programming users, the available possibilities for customizing their DA are limited and do not include the possibility of teaching the assistant new tasks. To make the most of the potential of DAs, users should be able to customize assistants by instructing them through Natural Language (NL). To provide such functionalities, NL interpretation in traditional assistants should be improved: (1) The intent identification system should be able to recognize new forms of known intents, and to acquire new intents as they are expressed by the user. (2) In order to be adaptive to novel intents, the Natural Language Understanding module should be sample efficient, and should not rely on a pretrained model. Rather, the system should continuously collect the training data as it learns new intents from the user. In this work, we propose AidMe (Adaptive Intent Detection in Multi-Domain Environments), a user-in-the-loop adaptive intent detection framework that allows the assistant to adapt to its user by learning his intents as their interaction progresses. AidMe builds its repertoire of intents and collects data to train a model of semantic similarity evaluation that can discriminate between the learned intents and autonomously discover new forms of known intents. AidMe addresses two major issues - intent learning and user adaptation - for instructable digital assistants. We demonstrate the capabilities of AidMe as a standalone system by comparing it with a one-shot learning system and a pretrained NLU module through simulations of interactions with a user. We also show how AidMe can smoothly integrate to an existing instructable digital assistant.

Spatial Configuration of Agile Wireless Networks With Drone-BSs and user-in-the-loop

Agile networking can reduce over-engineering, costs, and energy waste. Toward that end, it is vital to exploit all degrees of freedom of wireless networks efficiently, so that the service quality is not sacrificed. In order to reap the benefits of flexible networking, we propose a spatial network configuration (SNC) scheme, which can result in efficient networking;both from the perspective of network capacity and profitability. First, the SNC utilizes the drone-base-stations (drone-BSs) to configure access points. Drone-BSs are shifting paradigms of heterogeneous wireless networks by providing radically flexible deployment opportunities. On the other hand, their limited endurance and potential high cost increase the importance of utilizing drone-BSs efficiently. Therefore, second, user mobility is exploited via user-in-the-loop (UIL), which aims at influencing users' mobility by offering incentives. The proposed uncoordinated SNC is a computationally efficient method, yet, it may be insufficient to exploit the synergy between the drone-BSs and UIL. Hence, we propose a joint SNC, which increases the performance gain along with the computational cost. Finally, the semi-joint SNC combines the benefits of the joint SNC with computational efficiency. The numerical results show that the semi-joint SNC is two orders of magnitude faster than the joint SNC, and a profit of more than 15% can be obtained compared to conventional systems.

Continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion using an insulin pump has been documented to have significant clinical benefits as a treatment plan for type 1 diabetes mellitus patients. However, despite this, adoption in resource constrained settings like India is severely limited. This is often attributed to the costs associated with the *** usage of such a device is closely associated with a patient's lifestyle and its design demands a more user-centric approach to engineering design. The stakeholder involvement is needed for validation and guiding the product development direction. In this paper, we've outlined a user-in-the-loop approach to engineering design using the design of an insulin pump as a case study.

Mobile communications demand for data grows almost two-fold every year and cellular capacity cannot catch up with this in every location and at every point in time. Not only will congestion situations appear more frequently and severely, but also every increase of data transmitted and every new infrastructure point rolled out in order to catch up with that demand is going to consume more total power. One approach towards greener communication is to reduce the actual demand. While technical solutions on Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) layers 1 trough 7 are already being exploited, "layer 8", the user, is the original cause of the exploding demand. It is naive to assume that all data is equally important and valuable. user-in-the-loop (UIL) is a paradigm which can exactly hook in at this point, and it suggests to postpone, relocate, abandon or offload less urgent demand by immediate feedback and strong incentives like discounts and penalties in certain situations (in case of congestion). In particular, this means dynamic prices depending on time, location, and congestion (load) status, similar to smart grid for electricity utilities. Accounting and billing with dynamic prices, value-added services, and smart data pricing can be a challenge, and such accounting and billing are utterly incompatible with the flat-rate (all-you-can-consume) concept. However, cellular customers are involuntarily locked into contracts, but it is the current practice in the market, which is not in accordance with the free market spirit. Flat-rate plans are practically dead, but those still luring with this name, while having caps on the maximum allowance, sell fixed-volume packages under a smoother name instead. Ultimately, we need to re-establish usage-based-pricing as a fairer and more favourable way of charging. In this paper we motivate the dynamic pricing of UIL and the upcoming new need for usage-based tariffs. We compare a few status-quo tariff plans with our novel effective quantu

Long term user rate in cellular networks is the product of spectral efficiency achieved and the resources (time/frequency slots) allocated. The former is related to the received SINR, while the latter is limited by the load of the associated cell. The max-SINR cell association strategy has been used in cellular networks from GSM to LTE. This strategy maximizes the possible achieved spectral efficiency but fails to account for the load imbalance. Recently, there have been several investigations on load-aware cell association as an approach to match the traffic demand with the traffic supply, in which a user may associate to a less loaded cell, even though it does not necessarily provide the maximum SINR. In other words, a user is associated with a cell to get more share of resources at the cost of lower spectral efficiency. This paper goes beyond that by proposing a new load balancing approach that can simultaneously increase the user received SINR and the share of allocated resources. This is achieved by the user-in-the-loop (UIL) paradigm, which encourages the user to move to a new location that maximizes the utility function considering the received SINR, cell load and the probability of moving. Numerical results show that the UIL can increase the mean user rate substantially in comparison to the max-SINR or the load-aware cell association strategy, and also results in a more balanced load across the network.

In architectural design, architects explore a vast amount of design options to maximize various performance criteria, while adhering to specific constraints. In an effort to assist architects in such a complex endeavour, we propose IDOME, an interactive system for computer-aided design optimization. Our approach balances automation and control by efficiently exploring, analyzing, and filtering space layouts to inform architects' decision-making better. At each design iteration, IDOME provides a set of alternative building layouts which satisfy user-defined constraints and optimality criteria concerning a user-defined space parametrization. When the user selects a design generated by IDOME, the system performs a similar optimization process with the same (or different) parameters and objectives. A user may iterate this exploration process as many times as needed. In this work, we focus on optimizing built environments using architectural metrics by improving the degree of visibility, accessibility, and information gaining for navigating a proposed space. This approach, however, can be extended to support other kinds of analysis as well. We demonstrate the capabilities of IDOME through a series of examples, performance analysis, user studies, and a usability test. The results indicate that IDOME successfully optimizes the proposed designs concerning the chosen metrics and offers a satisfactory experience for users with minimal training.

The design of a medical device comprises multiple stages, beginning with task clarification, and followed by conceptual design, embodiment design, detailed design, testing, and a clinical study. Involvement of stakeholders at every stage is essential for translating an idea into a usable product. In this work, we adopt a 'user-in-the-loop' approach to Engineering Design (ED), to explore the use of clinical investigation as an iteration tool. An IV drip monitoring system designed for resource-constrained settings, proposed in our earlier work, is used as a case study to illustrate this. A basic prototype was investigated at multiple clinical settings with requisite approvals. Device operation by clinicians was observed, which elicited embodiment, ergonomic and human-machine interface related issues. While establishing device efficacy, the investigation also gathered significant inputs for subsequent design stages. The adopted approach ensures that only validated designs proceed to the next stage. However, this can only be undertaken for low-risk medical devices with appropriate precautions.

Blockchain Secured Auction-Based user Offloading in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

This letter presents a secure user offloading mechanism in heterogeneous wireless networks (HWNs), where a macrocell base station (MBS) offloads its users to small cell access points (SCAs) using Vickrey auction. Additionally, a user-in-the-loop (UIL) strategy is exploited to encourage the unserved users to move to desired locations for connections. As the participants in the conventional auction-based trading may collude or take selfish actions, we employ Ethereum framework for trustless, secure and distributed auctioning. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed user offloading methodology. The security aspects of the blockchain framework are also discussed.

Exploiting Blockage in VLC Networks Through user Rotations

Visible Light Communication (VLC) has attracted significant attention over the past decade. Although numerous research studies have been performed to improve the data rate of VLC links, an important fact has been largely neglected: human bodies that host VLC receivers could block their Line-of-Sight (LOS) downlinks, and thus, degrade the system performance greatly. In this paper, we propose a system that can significantly improve the robustness for VLC networks by avoiding performance degradation due to blockage. A novel user-in-the-loop mechanism is designed in which users (including human bodies and VLC receivers) are guided by the network to rotate themselves to improve the system performance and the individual user experience. Both our simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed user-in-the-loop mechanism can improve the system throughput and user fairness on average by 48% and 14%, respectively. For individual users, the average gain in throughput can reach up to 135%. Furthermore, to make the system more practical, two lightweight heuristics are designed and implemented which can achieve similar gains while reducing the computational complexity by 99%.
