Prior work showed the ability of a randomly chosen outer code of a concatenated code to correct large numbers of non-binary symbol errors in a simple manner, provided that the error symbols as vectors are linearly independent. This paper extends the technique in two ways: 1) it is shown how to correct a large class of dependent errors with little additional complexity;and 2) if the inner code supplies a list of two (or more) candidates in some or all decisions, a slightly modified vector symbol decoder can directly reveal most correct alternatives, allowing more powerful and often simpler correction.

Nonsystematic convolutional (conv.) codes can provide higher constraint length and free distance, which lead to better performance than the systematic codes. However, for large nonbinary symbols that cannot be practically decoded by Viterbi decoder and need to be decoded with vector symbol decoding (VSD) technique instead, using systematic conv. codes have two main advantages. First, the method of calculating the parity check matrix is greatly simplified. Second, the decoded data can be directly read from the decoded sequence with no additional circuit to map them. Thus, Bit error rate (BER) can also be found in addition to the decoding failure probability usually shown in previous works. Results show that with (63,47) Reed-Solomon inner -(3,2,2) systematic conv. outer code, BER is 1.56x10-5 in the Narrowband Power Line Communications (NB-PLC) channel modeled by the Middleton Class A with A= 0.1 gamma = 0.0001and AWGN with SNR = 8 dB. With (63, 39) RS and (63, 33) RS, the BERs are 9.23x10(-7) and 5.3824 x 10(-7) for SNR = 6dB respectively.

vector symbol decoding (VSD) with list of alternative vector symbol choices is presented as a relatively simple and high performance decoding technique for convolutional outer codes. The convolutional VSD technique has the advantage over the block VSD technique in that most corrections are almost immediate based on observation of only one or a few syndromes. The list decoding also improves the performance and often simplifies the decoding. One main assumption of VSD is that the error symbols are linearly independent, which usually is true for large symbol size. The performance of VSD is compared to the Reed-Solomon code decoding for various types of inner codes and channel conditions. Interleaved Reed-Solomon codes are also considered. The decoding failure probability of VSD is evaluated by both analytically approach to find the upper bound and computer simulation approach to find the exact probability. The upper bound is shown to be extremely close to the simulation result. The decoding failure probability of VSD is considerably lower than the Reed-Solomon code in most cases.

vector symbol decoding (VSD) is a channel code decoding technique that works with nonbinary symbols. It has many good features and performance, but one main limitation is the need to use large symbol size. Prior works usually use at least 24-bit symbols and in most case the assumption is 32-bit symbols. This paper shows the effect of symbol size and also a simple method to improve the performance of relatively much smaller symbol size of 16-bit symbols. The result shows that the improvement in the decoding failure probability of 16-bit symbols is noticeable with the proposed method However, it is still more suitable to use 24-bit or 32-bit symbols whenever possible since their performances are significantly better as expected.

A new ARQ strategy is proposed for nonbinary convolutional codes with vector symbol decoder (VSD). With one code word for each frame, VSD-ARQ is more efficient than the selective repeat (SR-ARQ) in terms of retransmission data length. VSD can report when it cannot decode and where the erroneous symbols start. For the (63,51) RS inner-(3,2,2) convolutional outer code and 51-symbol code word, VSD-ARQ saves up to 72.03 % of the retransmission data compared to SR-ARQ for NB-PLC and up to 73.01% for BB-PLC at SNR 26 dB. Shorter code words have a better probability of decoding failure without ARQ. However, with VSD-ARQ, they save less than the longer code words and have a lower code rate. VSD-ARQ uses less buffer than SR-ARQ.

A scaling technique is proposed to maintain the decoding failure probability of vector symbol decoding (VSD) with the increase in data rate. Specifically, the symbol size must be increased in the same ratio as the data rate. VSD is attractive since it allows for a very flexible scaling. This paper also presents a way to compute the optimal maximum number of syndromes to minimize the complexity of the decoder with no effect on the decoding performance. The results in a 2-state fading channel model show that the scaling of the symbol size from 446 to 892 (double) and to 1,784 (quadruple) bits/symbols can maintain the VSD decoding performance when the data rates are increased from 6 Mbps to 12 Mbps (double) and 24 Mbps (quadruple) respectively. General scaling ratios are also explained. The optimal numbers of maximum syndromes are presented for various convolutional codes as well.

This paper proposes a new decoding technique called "MP-VSD" for LDPC codes with large nonbinary symbols. It combines Hard Decision Message Passing (HDMP) with vector symbol decoding (VSD). VSD usually uses very short block codes to limit the number of error symbols, which limits the size of matrix inversion required in the VSD decoding step. MP-VSD can correct more than 60% of the correctable error patterns of VSD for an (60, 30) LDPC code with no matrix inversions in a 2-state fading channel model. Thus, longer block codes may be used for nonbinary symbols.

Error correction and detection play an important role in data transmission and storage systems. With the increasing demand for higher data transfer rates, reliability and efficiency is a necessity. A commonly used error correcting method is Reed-Solomon decoding. It is particularly attractive when dealing with bursts of errors. However, decoding complexity is a factor to consider when choosing codes. There exists a faster and rather simple method in which vector symbol decoding is used along with Reed-Solomon codes to correct errors with a probability ≥ 1 – n(n-k)2-r. This paper discusses and simulates this novel technique and shows that it does in fact correct at a close to perfect success rate. Three cases of errors are tested, two different types of bursts of errors along with a non-burst scenario. We will see that the procedure described in this paper can uniquely correct a larger range of errors with less decoding complexity.

In this communication, simple methods are shown for correcting bursts of large size and bursts combined with random errors using vector symbols and primarily vector XOR and feedback shift register operations. One result is that any (n, k) cyclic code with minimum distance > 2 can correct all full vector symbol error bursts of length n - k - 1 or less if the error vectors are linearly independent. If the bursts are not full but contain some error-free components, the capability of correcting bursts up to n - k or less is code dependent. Also, vector symbol decoding with Reed-Solomon component codes can correct, very simply, with probability >= 1 - n (n - k)2(-n), all cases of e <= n - k -1r -bit random errors in any cyclic span of length <= n - k. The techniques often work when there is linear dependence. In cases where most errors are in a burst but a small number of errors are outside, the solution, given error-correcting capability, can be broken down into a simple solution for the small number of outside errors, followed by a simple subtraction to reveal all the error values in the burst part.
