IT environments are a continuously changing entirety. Software and systems in these environments go through their lifecycles and then they are replaced with more advanced and economical solutions. This is a normal phenomenon in education and corporate life. Thesis focuses on Aalto University's version control system's acquisition project and debate on how the version control systems can be developed, and how their usage can be comprehended and rationalized in the university's environment. The research method for this thesis was case study which consisted of three smaller case studies. Case study was chosen for this study because it is used for describing and making observations. All the studies were conducted by following Yin's case study research process: plan, design, prepare, collect, analyze and share. The main research question for the thesis was "How can the usage of a version control system be developed, comprehended and rationalized?". The thesis was composed during Aalto's VCS project. The project aimed to acquire and provide a centrally managed system for the whole university, which could replace most of the current systems used in the different departments of the university. The thesis examines if and how the different systems could be replaced with a single version control system and how to prepare and execute an acquisition project of a new IT system. The smaller case studies were conducted during the project and its preparations. These studies examined the usage of version control systems at the university before the project, preparations of the project and the IT security methods used during the whole process. This was done by taking part in the processes and by using literature and studies related to the different tasks of the process. version control systems (VCS-es) play a major role in the software development life cycle, yet historically their security has been relatively underdeveloped compared to their importance. Recent history has shown that source code repositories represent appealing attack targets. Attacks that violate the integrity of repository data can impact negatively millions of users. Some VCS-es, such as Git, employ commit signatures as a mechanism to provide developers with cryptographic protections for the code they contribute to a repository. However, an entire class of other VCS-es, including the well-known Apache Subversion (SVN), lacks such protections. We design the first commit signing mechanism for centralized version control systems, which supports features such as working with a subset of the repository and allowing clients to work on disjoint sets of files without having to retrieve each other's changes. We implement a prototype for the proposed commit signing mechanism on top of the SVN codebase and show experimentally that it only incurs a modest overhead. With our solution in place, the VCS security model is substantially improved.

version control systems are commonly used by Information and communication technology professionals. They allow monitoring the single activity of different people working in the same project through all the project's lifetime. Thus, version control systems are also used by educational institutions. The aim of this work is to demonstrate that the academic success in Computer Sciences subjects may be predicted by monitoring students' interaction with a version control system. In order to do so, we have built a prediction model by using Model Evaluator, a tool which allows evaluating several Machine Learning models in order to select the most suitable for a specific problem. A set of experiments are being been carried out to evaluate the prediction model. At those experiments, students of different subjects of the degree in Computer Science of the University of Leon were involved. All the selected subjects: Operating systems Extension, Computer Programming, and Computer Organization, require students to complete practical assignments which imply developing software solutions in different programming languages. A common requisite of those practical assignments is the use of a Git repository to store source code and documentation. Tentative results suggest that continuous interaction with the Git repositories has a big impact on academic success.

In recent years, software development has started to transition from centralized version control systems (CVCSs) to decentralized version control systems (DVCSs). Although CVCSs and DVCSs have been studied extensively, there has been little research on the transition across these systems. This paper investigates the transition process, from the developer's view, in a large company. The paper captures the transition reasons, barriers, and outcomes through 10 developer interviews, and investigates these findings through a survey, participated by 70 developers. The paper identifies that the majority of the developers need to work incrementally and offline, and manage multiple contexts efficiently. DVCSs fulfill these developer needs;however the transition comes with a cost depending on the previous development workflow. The paper discusses the transition reasons, barriers and outcomes, and provides recommendations for teams planning such a transition. The paper shows that lightweight branches, and local and incremental commits were the main reasons for developers wanting to move to a DVCS. Further, the paper identifies the main problems with the transition process as: steep DVCS learning curve;incomplete DVCS integration with the rest of the development workflow;and DVCS scaling issues.

The topic of the thesis is topical, as the various universities and non-governmental companies are looking for ways to improve their processes to gain budget savings. This thesis will debate on the development, comprehension and rationalization of version control system usage at Aalto University. The research method of the study was case study which consisted of several (n=3) smaller case studies. The thesis has been conducted during a VCS project, which aimed to clarify the usage of VCS at Aalto University by providing a centrally managed system instead of multiple systems which are currently used among the departments of Aalto University. Objective of the thesis is to examine the possibility to substitute current systems to a one, centrally managed system and clarify the steps important to a VCS acquisition project and suggest improvements to the process of the project. The topic of the thesis is topical, as the various universities and non-governmental companies are looking for ways to improve their processes to gain budget savings. By enhancing the processes, the project should advance efficiently and the life cycle of the project from the begin of the project to the finished project can be reduced consequently offering savings to the companies in both, the staff costs and in equipment costs. The most important result of the research is that the reduction of overlapping systems will significantly improve the usage of the system and the local support provided for the system. At the same time, reduction will also offer a possibility to focus on the development of systems instead of just focusing on administrating multiple systems. version control systems are commonly used by Information and communication technology professionals. These systems allow monitoring programmers activity working in a project. Thus, version control systems are also used by educational institutions. The aim of this work is to evaluate if the academic success of students may be predicted by monitoring their interaction with a version control system. In order to do so, we have built a Machine Learning model which predicts student results in a specific practical assignment of the Operating systems Extension subject, from the second course of the degree in Computer Science of the University of Leon, through their interaction with a Git repository. To build the model, several classifiers and predictors have been evaluated. In order to do so, we have developed Model Evaluator (MoEv), a tool to evaluate Machine Learning models in order to get the most suitable for a specific problem. Prior to the model development, a feature selection from input data is done. The resulting model has been trained using results from 2016-2017 course and later validated using results from 2017-2018 course. Results conclude that the model predicts students' success with a success high percentage.

Software Engineering Project Courses with Industrial Clients

There is an acknowledged need for teaching realistic software development in project courses. The design space for such courses is wide, ranging from single-semester to two-semester courses, from single-client to multicustomer courses, from local to globally distributed courses, and from toy projects to projects with real clients. The challenge for a nontrivial project course is how to make the project complex enough to enrich students' software engineering experience, yet realistic enough to have a teaching environment that does not unduly burden students or the instructor. We describe a methodology for project courses that is realizable for instructors, improves students' skills, and leads to viable results for industry partners. In particular, recent advances in release management and collaboration workflows reduce the effort of students and instructors during delivery and increase the quality of the deliverables. To enable release and feedback management, we introduce Rugby, an agile process model based on Scrum that allows reacting to changing requirements. To improve early communication, we use Tornado, a scenario-based design approach that emphasizes the use of informal models for the interaction between clients and students. The combination of Rugby and Tornado allows students to deal with changing requirements, produce multiple releases, and obtain client feedback through the duration of the course. We describe our experience with more than 300 students working on 40 projects with external clients over a 4-year period. In the latest instance of our course, the students have produced more than 7000 builds with 600 releases for eleven clients. Using version control data to evaluate the impact of software tools: A case study of the version editor

Software tools can improve the quality and maintainability of software, but are expensive to acquire, deploy, and maintain, especially in large organizations. We explore how to quantify the effects of a software tool once it has been deployed in a development environment. We present an effort-analysis method that derives too[ usage statistics and developer actions from a project's change history (version control system) and uses a novel effort estimation algorithm to quantify the effort savings attributable to tool usage, We apply this method to assess the impact of a software tool called VE, a version-sensitive editor used in Bell Labs. VE aids software developers in coping with the rampant use of certain preprocessor directives (similar to #if/#endif in C source files). Our analysis found that developers were approximately 40 percent more productive when using VE than when using standard text editors.

Model-driven development is becoming a reality. Different CASE tool vendors support this paradigm, allowing developers to define high-level models and helping to transform them into refined models or source code. However, current software configuration management tools use a file-based data model that is barely sufficient to manipulate source code. This file-based data model is not adequate to provide versioning capabilities for software modeling environments, which are strongly focused on analysis and architectural design artifacts. The existence of a versioned repository of high-level artifacts integrated with a customized change control process could help in the development and maintenance of such model-based systems. In this work, we introduce Odyssey-SCM, an integrated software configuration management infrastructure for UML models. This infrastructure is composed of a flexible version control system for fine-grained UML model elements, named Odyssey-VCS, and two complementary components: a customizable change control system tightly integrated with the version control system, and a traceability link detection tool that uses data mining to discover change traces among versioned UML model elements and provides the rationale of change traces, automatically collected from the integrated software configuration management infrastructure.
