Repository mining for changes in Simulink and Stateflow models

Model-Based Development (MBD) is widely used for embedded controls development, with MATLAB/Simulink/Stateflow being one of the most used development environments in the automotive industry. Simulink/Stateflow models are the primary design artifacts in automotive controls MBD development, and these models must be maintained over their lifetime. We achieve this in traditional software designs through the use of information hiding. It is thus beneficial to develop these models so that they facilitate likely changes that do not adversely impact the quality of the design. In order to do so, the types of frequently performed changes must be understood and appropriate language mechanisms must be available to support these changes. While some work has been done to analyze changes in Simulink/Stateflow models, a much deeper understanding is needed. We leveraged an extraordinary opportunity of having access to a comprehensive industrial software repository and its associated version control system to gain insight into likely changes for Simulink/Stateflow in automotive controls development. This analysis provides accurate feedback on actual changes made over many years to Simulink/Stateflow models, and classifies changes to suggest how particular model changes can impact system evolution.

Odyssey-SCM: An integrated software configuration management infrastructure for UML models

Model-driven development is becoming a reality. Different CASE tool vendors support this paradigm, allowing developers to define high-level models and helping to transform them into refined models or source code. However, current software configuration management tools use a file-based data model that is barely sufficient to manipulate source code. This file-based data model is not adequate to provide versioning capabilities for software modeling environments, which are strongly focused on analysis and architectural design artifacts. The existence of a versioned repository of high-level artifacts integrated with a customized change control process could help in the development and maintenance of such model-based systems. In this work, we introduce Odyssey-SCM, an integrated software configuration management infrastructure for UML models. This infrastructure is composed of a flexible version control system for fine-grained UML model elements, named Odyssey-VCS, and two complementary components: a customizable change control system tightly integrated with the version control system, and a traceability link detection tool that uses data mining to discover change traces among versioned UML model elements and provides the rationale of change traces, automatically collected from the integrated software configuration management infrastructure. TurtleEditor: A Web-Based RDF Editor to Support Distributed Ontology Development on Repository Hosting Platforms

Ontologies are increasingly being developed on web-based repository hosting platforms such as GitHub. Accordingly, there is a demand for ontology editors which can be easily connected to the hosted repositories. TurtleEditor is a web-based RDF editor that provides this capability and supports the distributed development of ontologies on repository hosting platforms. It o r ers features such as syntax checking, syntax highlighting, and auto completion, along with a SPARQL endpoint to query the ontology. Furthermore, TurtleEditor integrates a visual editing view that allows for the graphical manipulation of the RDF graph and includes some basic clustering functionality. The text and graph views are constantly synchronized so that all changes to the ontology are immediately propagated and the views are updated accordingly. The results of a user study and performance tests show that TurtleEditor can indeed be e r ectively used to support the distributed development of ontologies on repository hosting platforms.

We explore how the adoption of a decentralized version control system (DVCS) affects the number of participants and the level of contribution in open source software (OSS) projects. Based on a monthly panel data of 10,381 OSS projects between 2007 and 2011, we find that DVCS reduces the private costs for participants in an OSS project and thus increases the number of participants, but decreases the average level of contribution by individual participants. Our findings provide a complementary view based on the cost side of participants' decision and have implications to other contexts where the project development is contingent on voluntary individual participation.

Collaborative vocabulary development in the context of data integration is the process of finding consensus between experts with different backgrounds, system understanding and domain knowledge. The complexity of this process increases with the number of people involved, the variety of the systems to be integrated and the dynamics of their domain. In this paper, we advocate that the usage of a powerful version control system is one of the keys to address this problem. Driven by this idea and the success of the version control system Git in the context of software development, we investigate the applicability of Git for collaborative vocabulary development. Even though vocabulary development and software development have much more similarities than differences, there are still important challenges. These need to be considered in the development of a successful versioning and collaboration system for vocabulary development. Therefore, this paper starts by presenting the challenges we are faced with during the collaborative creation of vocabularies and discusses its distinction to software development. Drawing from these findings, we present Git4Voc which comprises guidelines on how Git can be adopted to vocabulary development. Finally, we demonstrate how Git hooks can be implemented to go beyond the plain functionality of Git by realizing vocabulary-specific features like syntactic validation and semantic diffs.

Models are the primary artefacts of the software development process in Model-Driven Engineering (MDE). Like other software artefacts, models undergo a complex evolution during their life cycles. version control is one of the key techniques which enable developers to tackle this complexity. Traditional version control systems (VCS) are based on the copy-modify-merge approach which is not fully exploited in MDE since current implementations lack model-orientation. In this paper we provide a formalisation of the copy-modify-merge approach in the context of MDE. In particular, we analyse how the identification of commonalities and the calculation of differences can be defined by means of category-theoretical constructions. Moreover, we demonstrate how the properties of these constructions can be used to synchronise models and detect conflicting modifications. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Software development infrastructure allows communication between developers and it consists of a wide range of interconnected application specific tools which react events and communicate with themselves. These tools and their automation capabilities realize an intelligent system for software engineers which may be overlooked. Therefore, this infrastructure can be considered as a cognitive info-communication system. Teaching good communication practices and efficient usage of these tools is exceptionally important in higher education. Hence, software engineering capstone courses are essential part of education which are usually focused on methodologies, programming, communication or project management. Infrastructure is often assumed to be already established. On the other hand, development infrastructure is vital for many projects, evolve with time and contribute to the long term goals of software companies. Deployment of an efficient development infrastructure requires the integration of wide range of systems so it may not be available for recently started projects. Virtualization and cloud providers facilitates the deployment of complex software systems. This paper presents a virtual software development infrastructure that can be used in a classroom environment for mimic real development infrastructures.

In today's world large number of companies are facing problem related to version control systems. The problem is about comparing binary files such as excel file and recalling what changes have been done over the period of time. It is hard to keep track of what all changes have been made over a set of files in the company and hence comes the need of an approach which can fetch and compare the files with changes that have been done. Since binary files are not readable with human eye, this approach can convert those binary files to XML and compare it on the GUI to show and highlight the changes that have been made over the version control system. A VCS is a system that keeps track of changes one does over a set of files over the time and records it so it can be recalled in the future when needed. Binary file conversion approach is implemented to provide a solution to the problem for the companies that have extensive use for the binary files like Excel and need to refer the changes that were made on them.

During the process of design, copies of files are often stored to track changes and design development or to ensure that previous work will not be lost. In software design field, such process is supported using versioning system, where source code is saved intermittently when features are added or modified for individual or group use. We argue that similar versioning system will also benefit the design community when applied to 3D design files, to see how their designs progress and collaborate. In this paper we outline a implemented web based open ecosystem allows designers to similarly collaborate but with a lower bar for adoption than comparable software versioning system. Our system is to be applied to a classroom setting, where architecture students learn to make structural designs;they are then able to see, modify, and give feedback to each other's work.
