We introduce the Software Heritage filesystem (SwhFS), a user-space filesystem that integrates large-scale open source software archival with development workflows. SwhFS provides a POSIX filesystem view of Software Heritage, the largest public archive of software source code and version control system (VCS) development history. Using SwhFS, developers can quickly "checkout" any of the 2 billion commits archived by Software Heritage, even after they disappear from their previous known location and without incurring the performance cost of repository cloning. SwhFS works across unrelated repositories and different VCS technologies. Other source code artifacts archived by Software Heritage-individual source code files and trees, releases, and branches-can also be accessed using common programming tools and custom scripts, as if they were locally available. Collaborative vocabulary development in the context of data integration is the process of finding consensus between the experts of the different systems and domains. The complexity of this process is increased with the number of involved people, the variety of the systems to be integrated and the dynamics of their domain. In this paper we advocate that the realization of a powerful version control system is the heart of the problem. Driven by this idea and the success of Git in the context of software development, we investigate the applicability of Git for collaborative vocabulary development. Even though vocabulary development and software development have much more similarities than differences there are still important differences. These need to be considered within the development of a successful versioning and collaboration system for vocabulary development. Therefore, this paper starts by presenting the challenges we were faced with during the creation of vocabularies collaboratively and discusses its distinction to software development. Based on these insights we propose Git4Voc which comprises guidelines how Git can be adopted to vocabulary development. Finally, we demonstrate how Git hooks can be implemented to go beyond the plain functionality of Git by realizing vocabulary-specific features like syntactic validation and semantic diffs.

Software development infrastructure allows communication between developers and it consists of a wide range of interconnected application specific tools which react events and communicate with themselves. These tools and their automation capabilities realize an intelligent system for software engineers which may be overlooked. Therefore, this infrastructure can be considered as a cognitive info-communication system. Teaching good communication practices and efficient usage of these tools is exceptionally important in higher education. Hence, software engineering capstone courses are essential part of education which are usually focused on methodologies, programming, communication or project management. Infrastructure is often assumed to be already established. On the other hand, development infrastructure is vital for many projects, evolve with time and contribute to the long term goals of software companies. Deployment of an efficient development infrastructure requires the integration of wide range of systems so it may not be available for recently started projects. Virtualization and cloud providers facilitates the deployment of complex software systems. This paper presents a virtual software development infrastructure that can be used in a classroom environment for mimic real development infrastructures.

As collaborative coding environments make it easier to contribute to software projects, the number of developers involved in these projects keeps increasing. This increase makes it more difficult for code reviewers to deal with buggy contributions. Collaborative environments like GitHub provide a rich source of data on developers' contributions. Such data can be used to extract information about developers regarding technical (e.g., their experience) and social (e.g., their interactions) factors. Recent studies analyzed the influence of these factors on different activities of software development. However, there is still room for improvement on the relation between these factors and the introduction of bugs. We present a broader study, including 8 projects from different domains and 6,537 bug reports, on relating five technical, three social factors, and the introduction of bugs. The results indicate that technical and social factors can discriminate between buggy and clean commits. But, the technical factors are more determining than social ones. Particularly, the developers' habits of not following technical contribution norms and the developer's commit bugginess are associated with an increase on commit bugginess. On the other hand, project's establishment, ownership level of developers' commit, and social influence are related to a lower chance of introducing bugs.

The development of intelligent production creates a stable and constantly growing need for equipment, software, design solutions, various technical and technological services. The specificity of products and services that are in demand in promising markets in the field of smart production requires the availability of various types of information systems for monitoring and management at all stages of production. In particular, corporate information analytical systems can be classified as such systems. The process of deploying an information system on a remote server can involve building and linking several dependent or independent components. The time and effort required to manually manage the deployment of the information system are unreasonably large. It is proposed to automate this process in order to reduce the impact of human errors and time. The analysis of modern means of increasing the speed of deployment of corporate systems is carried out. The architecture of a new solution for the continuous deployment of the system has been developed.

In recent years, models are increasingly used throughout the entire lifecycle in software development projects. In effect, the need for collaborating on these models emerged, requiring change tracking and versioning. However, many researchers have shown that existing methods and tools for version control (VC) do not work well on graph-like models, such as UML, SysML or domain-specific modeling languages. To alleviate this, alternative techniques and methods have been proposed which can be classified into state-based and operation-based approaches. Existing research shows advantages of operation-based over state-based approaches in selected use cases, such as conflict detection or merging. However, there are only few results available on the advantages of operation-based approaches in the most common use case of a VC system: review and understand change. In this paper, we present and discuss both approaches and their use cases. Moreover, we present the results of an empirical study to compare a state-based with an operation-based approach for the use case of reviewing and understanding change. For this study, we have mined an operation-based model repository and interviewed users to assess their understanding of randomly selected changes. Our results indicate that users better understand complex changes in the operation-based representation.

Code authorship information is important for analyzing software quality, performing software forensics, and improving software maintenance. However, current tools assume that the last developer to change a line of code is its author regardless of all earlier changes. This approximation loses important information. We present two new line-level authorship models to overcome this limitation. We first define the repository graph as a graph abstraction for a code repository, in which nodes are the commits and edges represent the development dependencies. Then for each line of code, structural authorship is defined as a subgraph of the repository graph recording all commits that changed the line and the development dependencies between the commits;weighted authorship is defined as a vector of author contribution weights derived from the structural authorship of the line and based on a code change measure between commits, for example, best edit distance. We have implemented our two authorship models as a new git built-in tool git-author. We evaluated git-author in an empirical study and a comparison study. In the empirical study, we ran git-author on five open source projects and found that git-author can recover more information than a current tool (git-blame) for about 10% of lines. In the comparison study, we used git-author to build a line-level model for bug prediction. We compared our line-level model with a representative file-level model. The results show that our line-level model performs consistently better than the file-level model when evaluated on our data sets produced from the Apache HTTP server project.

The lifecycle of a large-scale software system can undergo many releases. Each release often involves hundreds or thousands of revisions committed by many developers over time. Many code changes are made in a systematic and collaborative way. However, such systematic and collaborative code changes are often undocumented and hidden in the evolution history of a software system. It is desirable to recover commonalities and associations among dispersed code changes in the evolutionary trajectory of a software system. In this paper, we present SETGA (Summarizing Evolutionary Trajectory by Grouping and Aggregation), an approach to summarizing historical commit records as trajectory patterns by grouping and aggregating relevant code changes committed over time. SETGA extracts change operations from a series of commit records from version control systems. It then groups extracted change operations by their common properties from different dimensions such as change operation types, developers and change locations. After that, SETGA aggregates relevant change operation groups by mining various associations among them. The proposed approach has been implemented and applied to three open-source systems. The results show that SETGA can identify various types of trajectory patterns that are useful for software evolution management and quality assurance.

This paper proposes a novel technique for clustering commits for understanding the intents of implementation. Such a classification of commits should be able to assist developers to understand commits related to particular requirements, for example, how and why has this function been implemented, or has this function suffered from any bugs? Our technique adopts a clustering algorithm on identifier names that are related to changes in each commit. Such an approch allows us to take the semantics of each commit into account without commit messages, and so our approach is robust for the situation where some commits lack accurate descriptions. We conducted a pilot study to confirm that our idea answers to our objective. The pilot study found some good examples that showed the usefulness of our approach, and there were some undesirable results that gave some ideas to improve it.

In an attempt to tackle shortcomings of current approaches to collaborating on the development of structured data sets, we present a prototype platform that allows users to share and collaborate on the development of data structures via a web application, or by using language bindings or an API. Using techniques from the theory of persistent linked data structures, the resulting platform delivers automatically version-controlled map and graph abstract data types as a web service. The core of the system is provided by a Hash Array Mapped Trie (HAMT) which is made confluently persistent by path-copying. The system aims to make efficient use of storage, and to have consistent access and update times regardless of the version being accessed or modified.
